To be slightly fed up of white people doing this

TacoLover · 19/09/2018 07:00

Every time there is a thread discussing racism, there will be a mention of white privilege. Cue a flurry of hurt posters writing essays about how stupid the idea of white privilege is and how it doesn't exist, because their lives are so hard and they grew up on a few pieces of bread and a Red BullGrin

This really gets on my tits because after seeing this shit time and time again, THIS ISN'T WHAT WHITE PRIVILEGE MEANS. It doesn't mean your life isn't hard, it doesn't mean you don't face barriers in your life. What it does mean is the barriers in your life will never or hardly ever be a result of the colour of your skin. It doesn't mean you live in a mansion because you're white.

Just needed to get that out, sorry. I'm sure my only replies will be white people telling me how racist I am for only targeting them(Even though this is something that only white people do)Grin

Have you not ever read a history book smudge

The vast vast amount of countries which do not have stable democracies are countries europeans fucked up first

And thats not me being all liberal...thats in just about every history book

HermioneGoesBackHome · 20/09/2018 07:32

Smudge thanks for the most laughable post I have seen in a long time.
White culture been fair and the most innovative lol 😂 😂😂😂

I would really advise you look at history rather than the last 100 years too. You might learn a lot about other civilisations.
For example that it’s China that discovered America.
Or again in China, its medical system discovered diabetes (as well as a way to treat it with pigs pancreas) around 1400 when we didn’t actually ‘discovered it’ until 1920, let along find a way to treat it, with pig pancreas btw, until the 1950....

Hahaha the growing black privilege comment is hilarious to me.

In saying that @tangletwisters are you admitting that white privilege does exist? The work situation sounds like poor management of the member of staff, this situation has nothing to do with him or her being privileged in society which is what we are talking about. If anything it sounds like they are scared of the person.

White privilege is a societal and systematic issue that works to further the perception that white people are superior and more deserving, we are not talking about individuals here (even so white individuals are still privileged over a BME person for example, even if they are disabled, homosexual etc) It has meant that white people have grown up oblivious to the fact that they are white, as white is promoted as the normal and anything else is "ethnic" and often is attached to a host of negative things - crime, gangs, work shy etc. White privilege exists in the world, I have especially seen it in education.

If you and other posters still don't get it and you care to learn, read "why I'm no longer talking to white people about race' by reni eddo-lodge.

I'm black Caribbean and tbh I thought life was relatively rosy until I started seeing non-black people getting promoted ahead of me despite the fact I do my job very well, better qualified etc. Then one day I realised many black people around me failed to progress at the rate of their white peers. Then it became obvious. Then I got a black manager. Then I became a manager. Then I saw that actually, the newer, whiter colleagues were being paid better! Outrage! Then our white boss tried to phase blackpeople out based on performance, but actually, everyone was performing the same on average, and if anything the newer members were slightly underperforming. Surely this would be obvious because they were less experienced? Funny that when the boss realised this, that strategy was dropped. Then boss man tried to upskill the new members using a BS excuse but they found newer better jobs and left haha! So guess who got to benefit from the already paid for training courses! Grin I'm not bitter I love my team and we are all still in contact. But wp is alive and well.

I work for a community, public-health funded project where the only people who live in the community and work for the project all along were black. Myself included at one point. I do see things improving, one day we may all be somewhat equal. Today is not that day, so acknowledgement of wp is what we're asking for at the very least.

What on earth do you mean @CantankerousCamel?

YeTalkShiteHen · 20/09/2018 13:23

The very first comment is whataboutery about male privilege. It’s rude.

There is absolutely a place to talk about male privilege, many threads on here do.

But to dismiss what OP was trying to say by bringing up male privilege wasn’t on.

areyoubeingserviced · 20/09/2018 13:43

Exactly cantankerous- as soon as I started reading the thread , I knew that someone would talk about male privilege . Really annoyed me and in a way proved the Op’s point. She is here talking about WP and a presumably white person derails the thread by talking about MP , which takes the focus away from the matter at hand. Not acceptable

CantankerousCamel · 20/09/2018 13:50

The male privilege chat. The woman who has CORRECTED THE OP’s GRAMMAR with a passive aggressive comment about job interviews.

This thread is the WORST thing I've read on mumsnet. Shameful

Becles · 20/09/2018 18:52

A wonderful example of dismissing BME people's lived experience and then inserting yourself into the conversation with whataboutery and complete arrogance.

YANBU OP. You are right to bring this subject up, it is always worth highlighting because if you you're in a position of privilege it is so difficult to notice.

Whataboutery isn't really on in a thread like this, it's unnecessary and derailing. That's not to say there aren't parallels and similarities between different types of privilege and we should challenge unfairness wherever it is seen. It would be nice if people who understand how male privilege is manifested in society could use their imaginations to notice white privilege too.

Becles · 20/09/2018 19:20

This one is awesome too

TacoLover · 20/09/2018 20:45

Tbh I thought this thread was going to turn out worseGrin

BIWI · 20/09/2018 20:48

It's brought a lot of MN racists out of the woodwork for MNHQ to take note of, so some good has come of it Grin

FloydWasACat · 21/09/2018 13:08

What is the point of this post Lweji? Lots of similar things could be said about the population of the whole world.

Lweji

Whites also created nazism, atomic bombs.
It's multicultural countries that tend to be fairer and more advanced.

YeTalkShiteHen · 21/09/2018 13:11

FloydWasACat it was in response to a staggeringly blatantly racist post implying white people were responsible for everything good and that BAME people should learn from white people.

I paraphrase, but the original post Lweji was responding to makes their post make sense.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 21/09/2018 13:21

I agree with yetalk

The original post was really dumb...

FloydWasACat · 21/09/2018 16:30

Ah, ok. Thanks for explaining

YeTalkShiteHen · 21/09/2018 16:33

I know getting it deleted makes it not make sense, but honestly if you’d read it you’d see why it was deleted.

It was truly awful. And from a long standing poster too!

YeTalkShiteHen · 21/09/2018 16:33

What I meant by that is that it was so awful I fully expected it to be from a troll and it wasn’t.

Havaina · 21/09/2018 21:45

Just watching the videos people posted.

Becles, that was great.

Wait... Was my last post deleted for the blonde joke? It was tongue in cheek, but ok. Grin
