To be slightly fed up of white people doing this

Every time there is a thread discussing racism, there will be a mention of white privilege. Cue a flurry of hurt posters writing essays about how stupid the idea of white privilege is and how it doesn't exist, because their lives are so hard and they grew up on a few pieces of bread and a Red BullGrin

This really gets on my tits because after seeing this shit time and time again, THIS ISN'T WHAT WHITE PRIVILEGE MEANS. It doesn't mean your life isn't hard, it doesn't mean you don't face barriers in your life. What it does mean is the barriers in your life will never or hardly ever be a result of the colour of your skin. It doesn't mean you live in a mansion because you're white.

Just needed to get that out, sorry. I'm sure my only replies will be white people telling me how racist I am for only targeting them(Even though this is something that only white people do)Grin

A middle class son or daughter of a Nigerian surgeon in Hertfordshire would have significantly brighter future than a white working class boy or girl growing up on a council estate in Sunderland.

Why are you benchmarking a black surgeon with a white working class boy?

You should benchmark him/her against a white surgeon surely?

Deathgrip · 19/09/2018 10:06

A middle class son or daughter of a Nigerian surgeon in Hertfordshire would have significantly brighter future than a white working class boy or girl growing up on a council estate in Sunderland.

It’s actually painful at this point. You are (wilfully?) misunderstanding the entire premise.

What about a black child growing up on that Sunderland council estate? That’s the comparator, not wealthy kids of a surgeon (although what about wealthy white kids of a surgeon?).

Havaina · 19/09/2018 10:06

But is it dangerous to say that all white people have privalige over all others regardless of situation?

No one has said this, have they?

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 19/09/2018 10:06

Its like trying to explain sexism to some men.
"But, but Theresa May is the Prime minister and my mate Dave shovels shit for a living so it's not a thing!"

Ohluckyme · 19/09/2018 10:08

Havaina yes they have

Lweji · 19/09/2018 10:08

There is no such thing as 'white privilege' in the UK.

There is, though. It's a game of averages, and comparing like with like except skin colour.

There is something called 'social class privilege' though.
In addition to...

A middle class son or daughter of a Nigerian surgeon in Hertfordshire would have significantly brighter future than a white working class boy or girl growing up on a council estate in Sunderland.

What white privilege means is:
A middle class child of a Nigerian surgeon in Hertfordshire (on average) doesn't have the same bright future than the middle class child of a white British surgeon in Hertfordshire.

Havaina · 19/09/2018 10:09

Ohluckme where, sorry?

Ohluckyme · 19/09/2018 10:09

Havaina That’s what this whole thread is about. That’s the concept of white privalige

Laughingtreeknight · 19/09/2018 10:09

Why are you benchmarking a black surgeon with a white working class boy?

Havaina The PP is making that comparison ( I assume) in order to highlight the ludicrous nature of 'white privilege' by showing that there are far more pertinent factors than race when deciding how successful or otherwise someone is going to be.

If you focus on nothing but race then you inevitably get a very skewed representation f the truth.

The black son of a surgeon would still be eligible for an assisted place in a number of workplaces that I have worked in, based purely on their skin colour, while the 'white working class boy' wouldn't be eligible for any kind of similar help, despite needing it far more.

Thanks for this link DunesOfSand

Heartbreaking and very very clear. I'll make sure my dcs see it.

Laughingtreeknight · 19/09/2018 10:11

A middle class child of a Nigerian surgeon in Hertfordshire (on average) doesn't have the same bright future than the middle class child of a white British surgeon in Hertfordshire

Evidence for this assertion Lweji?

Havaina · 19/09/2018 10:12

Havaina That’s what this whole thread is about. That’s the concept of white privalige

Then you've misunderstood the concept of the thread. People are not saying (to quote you) 'all white people have privalige over all others regardless of situation'. That's what the OP and others are trying to people educate people about.

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 10:12

What I have seen, is that The phrase ‘white privilege’ is unfortunately used as an argument stopper, in the same way as ‘’terf’ is.

I have very rarely, maybe never, seen it used by black women (the kind with vaginas) in that way though.

It's usually white males and their handmaidens ime. I just link this and then swan off

Mookatron · 19/09/2018 10:13

@diamondcity1 can you explain that statement please?

Lweji · 19/09/2018 10:13

I also feel personally offended by it, as it implies that I cannot possibly be as successful as a white man without some kind of outside assistance.

What it actually is about is leveling the field, because white men already benefit from societal advantages.
If anything, it's recognising that some people have had limited chances of success because of outside influences that have nothing to do with their worth.
It's about creating conditions for groups that have been disadvantaged to be given chances without having to prove they are 150% or more better than their peers.

3luckystars · 19/09/2018 10:14

@DunesOfSand

Thank you for that video.

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 10:14

No one person can have all privilege over everyone else Ohluckyme.

Privilege means that If everything else were equal, you'd have more privilege over the other person who was exactly the same except for that one distinguishing feature which could be wealth/race/sex

Lweji · 19/09/2018 10:14

A middle class child of a Nigerian surgeon in Hertfordshire (on average) doesn't have the same bright future than the middle class child of a white British surgeon in Hertfordshire

Evidence for this assertion Lweji?

Dear god, I'm not making that assertion. I'm telling you what a relevant comparison would be.
Although, on average, I'd bet it's true.

Ohluckyme · 19/09/2018 10:14

Havaina I asked a question, please don’t misquote me. Please explain to me how white people are not privaliged over others then.

Havaina · 19/09/2018 10:15

The black son of a surgeon would still be eligible for an assisted place in a number of workplaces that I have worked in, based purely on their skin colour, while the 'white working class boy' wouldn't be eligible for any kind of similar help, despite needing it far more.

Source, please? Ime, BAME people have to work twice as hard to prove their worth.

And let's not forget the research that showed BAME people have to apply for an average of 13 jobs to be called for an interview, whereas white people only have to apply for an average of 7.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 19/09/2018 10:15

And some people invented mathematics while others lived naked in caves. What's your point diamond, do spell it out?

Lweji · 19/09/2018 10:16

Also, for the love of god, it's privilege. With an I.
Please.

Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2018 10:16

I believe that white privilege is a thing as is male privilege
However, if I had started a thread called “to be slightly fed up with black/Asian etc people doing this” I doubt it would go down well
Generalising about what “white people” do is wrong, we aren’t one big homogeneous group

Ohluckyme · 19/09/2018 10:17

Lweji Yes I know - my bad state education has failed me yet again.
