People who ask to "jump in" when you're on a machine in the gym

Does anyone else find this annoying and inconsiderate?
I have had two guys earlier ask me if they can use the machine whilst I am resting so that means I will have to wait for both of them to finish their reps.

It just disturbs people exercises I understand if I was using the machine for over 10 minutes but I'm doing 50 reps

Why cant people wait? Its rude and annoying I would never ask someone who was before me to disturb their workout for me. I would just go on something else.

And they ask when I just got on the machine and hadn't even done 10 reps yet. They could of waited a few minutes

Anyone I did say no and I encourage anyone else to say no when people ask it unless you been on it for 10 or more minutes

Depends how long you are resting for. If you are doing HIIT then YANBU as the 'rest' period is never more than a minute, but if you are sitting there idol for a few minutes, then, YABU. It pisses me off when people hog machines and they aren't actually using them

Belina · 18/09/2018 17:29

My rest is literally 30 secs if that

Me to mushroom especially when they are on the phone but if I just saw someone go on it I would wait at least 5 odd minutes before askin

People ask to jump in during your 30 second rest ? Hmm

Njordsgrrrl · 18/09/2018 17:33

Do women do this?

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 18/09/2018 17:34

Just say no, you’re still using it!

My gym pet hate is when people use the assisted pull up machine to do unassisted ones, not even using the assistance for any reps. There’s multiple other places with pull up bars and handles in the gym but only one assistance machine. Angry

I’ve tried assisted pull ups with bands but I’m far too clumsy for that!

Haireverywhere · 18/09/2018 17:35

If your rest is under a minute YANBU.

PermanentlyFrizzyHairBall · 18/09/2018 17:37

Definitely say no you're going to be back on in 20 seconds. I think i you're resting for a long time or have taken up the machine for a while I could understand but not when you've just got on no.

Witchofzog · 18/09/2018 17:38

I had this and I let him and still feel cross at him now. I paused for literally 30 secs Confused

Belina · 18/09/2018 17:38

Nope always men do it never had a female ask

Witch I have before as well but it kept happening and they were using and resting longer than me so I left the machine so anyone else i say no

It depends. If your rest is very short then it isn’t unreasonable to keep possession of the machine but there are LOTS of people at my gym who do small numbers of heavy reps and then sit there on phones or whatever, doing fuck all. If you ask to use the machine whilst they’re resting, you get a look and a sarcastic “I’m using it”. Then they go back to fucking about on their phones.

WatchingFromTheWings · 18/09/2018 17:44

I've never had this happen or seen it happen. They're being rude! Just tell them you can have the machine when you're finished.

ToElleWithIt · 18/09/2018 17:45

YABU
It’s pretty normal gym practice tbh. Most gyms have signs about allowing other members to “work in” during busy periods. If you’re doing HIIT day that and add “I’ll be done in 2 mins”. If your rest period is 30 seconds it’s entirely reasonable that someone could do their (8-15) reps while you’re resting and why shouldn’t they.

MaisyPops · 18/09/2018 17:49

My gym it's standard to work in and alternate between reps. Someone else goes on whilst you're resting and swap. What feels like a short break between reps is often longer than you think though (I thought I had a short break between reps, then did some personal trainer sessions and suddenly I realised my breaks alone were actually longer than I thought)

Unless you're doing very short breaks in which case YANBU.

curlylocks101 · 18/09/2018 17:51

My gym has two squat racks, one with a mirror and one without. The one without was free and a man asked to jump in during my (short) rests because he wanted to use the one with the mirror that badly. I pointed out that the other one was free...

MaisyPops · 18/09/2018 17:56

curly
Maybe he wanted to use the one with the mirror.
I know I only squat on the one with a mirror. I want to be able to check my form and alignment and technique which I can't do without a mirror.

onlyk · 18/09/2018 17:58

It’s rude and I’ve only had blokes do it to me.

Examples
Are you done with those weights yet? I’m not even resting between reps and have only just started. I said no and he just stood directly in front of me staring. So I did some extras with a smile.

Personally favourite on a middle trendmile for 10 minutes which I had to wait for when from behind me “love are you finished yet” I said “no” he said “well at peak time you’re asked to only be on for 20 mins max so could you finish up” me “ i’m aware i’ve actually only been on for 10 minutes however the gentlemen on the right is over 30 minutes and on the left coming up to 45 I’m sure they can help”........ interesting enough dead silence reigned.

esk1mo · 18/09/2018 18:00

its not the worst thing to happen in a gym. im sure they can do their reps during the 30second period.

whats worse is being asked to MOVE by male PTs so they can work out in the space you are using, because they are more important obviously.

cupofteaandcake · 18/09/2018 18:00

They should wait. If you are doing say 3 sets with a short 20-30 second break in between they should. I would simply say 'I'm just resting between reps, I'll be finished in xxx time' and let them wait. It's rude in my opinion.

VickyEadie · 18/09/2018 18:04

Nope always men do it never had a female ask

There's a large elderly man (NB: I'm 60 myself) who frequents my gym and only uses the resistance machines. On two occasions now, I've been on the abs machine and he's arrived, parked his three-wheeled zimmer thingy and then come and stood, staring menacingly at me. This is whilst other machines he uses (and I know because I've seen him) are free - but clearly, he's so feckin' anal he has to start with that one.

I do not let him bully me off it - but if he does it again, I'm dobbing him in for doing that and for wearing backless Crocs when there's a sign clearly displayed about suitable gym footwear.

(rant, rant)

DeadGood · 18/09/2018 18:05

I’d also be interested to know if these men are asking other men if they can “jump in”, or if they just target women.
