People who ask to "jump in" when you're on a machine in the gym

Belina · 18/09/2018 17:23

Does anyone else find this annoying and inconsiderate?
I have had two guys earlier ask me if they can use the machine whilst I am resting so that means I will have to wait for both of them to finish their reps.

It just disturbs people exercises I understand if I was using the machine for over 10 minutes but I'm doing 50 reps

Why cant people wait? Its rude and annoying I would never ask someone who was before me to disturb their workout for me. I would just go on something else.

It's because their exercise is more important that yours OP, dontcha know?

Mushroomsarehorrible · 18/09/2018 18:15

DeadGood

I’d also be interested to know if these men are asking other men if they can “jump in”, or if they just target women

Definitely target women in the main. Or guys who look like they don't pose too much of a threat Hmm

I enjoy making them wait Grin

brighteyeowl17 · 18/09/2018 18:15

I’ve only had guys ask me and no your not being unreasonable. Usually what they mean is move and hope you will feel intimidated. Or at least that is my experience.

Louislovesmud · 18/09/2018 18:16

I've had both men and women ask and whether I say yes depends on how long my reps are and how long my rest is. It's always been my experience at any gym I've been to and I've never had any negative reaction on the times I've said no

esk1mo · 18/09/2018 18:18

mushroom both times i stood my ground.

one even LIED and said he’d been using the barbell id been using. he obviously came over when i’d nipped to the loo, not realising i’d already been there for 10 minutes using it, warming up etc and had seen him across the room chatting to people Hmm

when i stood up for mysef he told me to calm down & not get agitated. i was completely calm! he then apologized later saying “i didnt mean to piss you off”, i replied “i wasnt pissed off” and he said “i never said you were!” Confused

not exaggerating when i say the gym made me a feminist. i had a guy take a 15KG plate from a machine i was using. i was literally sitting on the seat with 15KG on each side and he took one!

they NEVER do it to other men. id also like to add, its never the big muscly guys, the “meat heads” or intimidating ones. they have always been nice and friendly, even gentlemanly.

Same.
Maybe I go to an unusually nice gym.

When I have my PT session, they even asked a man if we could jump in. Nobody bats an eyelid. Then again it's also the sort of gym where if you leave heavy weights on the machines in the weights area then you get suspended/banned and if you don't tidy your weights up you also get suspended/banned. They're quite good on etiquette.

CoffeeShortbread · 18/09/2018 18:21

The machine hogs in my gym are both sexes and a i’m female who ‘bullies’ people off machines. AKA politely asks to use the machine for its given purpose if it’s being used as a glorified armchair. Just to add balance to the ‘it’s all men looming over women’ argument’. Not in my experience.

My Shock emoji was deleted by accident. It reads differently without it. Smile

Branleuse · 18/09/2018 18:21

If it truly is a 30sec rest then yanbu, but it is super frustrating when someone sits around for 5 minutes resting and hogging a machine

lucydogz · 18/09/2018 18:24

I'm fed up with machine hoggers at my gym, sitting playing with their phones. If you're not using it, get off

MaggieAndHopey · 18/09/2018 18:27

I use the free weights rather than machines but if someone asks if they can work in, (which mainly men do, I agree), I say 'yes' if it's convenient, 'no', if it's not. Problem solved.

19lottie82 · 18/09/2018 18:31

I was having a rest between sets with a pair of dumbbells on a bench and a guy came up

“are you finished with those?”

“No, sorry”

“How many sets have you got left?”

“I’m using them for a couple of exercises, but I’ll give you a shout when I’m finished with them.”

“Oh. Are you?”

“Yes.”

Then he stands there for about ten seconds, before walking off?! Angry

afrikat · 18/09/2018 18:41

Yeah it's rude unless you are resting for more than a minute and / or faffing around on your phone

In future just say 'sorry I'm only having a very short rest I'll be done in 5 minutes or so' then crack on and ignore them

Bahhhhhumbug · 18/09/2018 19:25

Never had this happen but l do two classes, one Zumba, one Clubbercise and a Body Combat, martial arts, they are done in big dance studios with mirrors etc. I flounced out of one last week because of space awareness ignorance. The people who are step or kick perfect and been doing it for years always hog the front row right behind the instructor whilst people like me not being going for long or new and.... yer know.... actually need to see the fecking instructor end up at the back. One even always stands right in front of her instead of to one side so people behind cant see her either. I tried getting there early last week and went and stood right up front and the bloody woman who usually stands there came in late and stood right next to me as close to 'her' space as possible, so close l got gradually moved across everytime l had to step to the right in the routine until she was basically in the space l had claimed and l was far too close to the next person along. So l fecked off and when the instructor came out and asked me why l told her and she was very nice about it and agreed but l doubt anything will be said. It's like the regulars think their name is engraved on the floor in their space or something

Belina · 18/09/2018 20:07

This has actually never happened to me at any other gym besides my current one which is pure gym.
The men already hog the weight room with the squat machine and they go in groups so are so loud I can hear them over my music

curlylocks101 · 18/09/2018 20:09

maisy. I wanted to use the one with a mirror too, which is why I hopped on it when it was free. If he was that desperate to squat right that second the other one was free Smile

MaisyPops · 18/09/2018 20:11

curlylocks101
It's an in demand piece of kit at lots of gyms (why they don't have more mirrors is beyond me).
My logic is that if someone asks if we can swap and it's convenient then I say yes and if not then in say it's not convenient.

lemonadefloat · 18/09/2018 20:13

YABU if you are hogging it AND LOOKING ON YOUR PHONE. Gives me the rage. It's not a chair.

esk1mo · 18/09/2018 21:51

lemonade it doesn’t really matter if someone is on their phone. it’s not hogging if no one has asked you to work in.

a rest period is a rest period, why cant people go on their phone? tonchange a song, text OH, log an exercise. they still aren’t going to be using th equipment regardless of what they do inbetween sets.

unless people are sitting for 5+ minutes on their phone doing nothing, its not really an issue.

GhostCurry · 19/09/2018 08:07

“ when the instructor came out and asked me why l told her and she was very nice about it and agreed but l doubt anything will be said.”

Can’t stand this - when there’s a problem that would be easily solved by the person in authority, but they won’t step up.

All she would have to do is look at the person ‘in the wrong’, say brightly, “could you move into the next row please, it’s too crowded up front.” Job done. Whereas if humbug tried to resolve it herself, she would get a shirty reply and be seen as a bitch.

lucydogz · 19/09/2018 08:29

Yes to this.

19lottie82 · 19/09/2018 16:11

I use my phone between sets, I’m taking notes of my weights / reps.

CantankerousCamel · 19/09/2018 16:15

This is why I CrossFit

Minesril · 19/09/2018 17:49

This all sounds horrific! Ladies only kettlebell class for me.

foggetyfog · 19/09/2018 18:12

YANBU. In my gym it's old men who are the worst but I do feel irrational rage every time I see one elderly woman who never uses any gym equipment but just twists herself in yoga knots on a mat for at least half an hour.
There are only 3 mats in the gym, tie yourself in knots at home you show off!
