AIBU to ask why...

I’m guessing this has probably been asked before and I didn’t need to know back then 🙈😂 but seriously, why do bras made for children need to be padded or even lightly padded?
My poor DD is 10, T-E-N dear people!
She doesn’t need a padded bra, the poor kid is huge already which in turn makes her a lovely target for the body shamers during PE and swimming 😡and add to that she just started her periods too, my poor baby!
She’s at that point where crop tops just aren’t supporting her enough and even the dear old gal that measured her said she needs a proper bra even though it’s only a 30A
I have looked at lots online and the majority are flipping padded, why?

Just in case of any keyboard warriors out there, she’s perfect height and weight for an average 10 year old - so her hormones developing early aren’t because she’s unhealthy or obese! Read that on a period thread a while ago, numpty’s 😳

My understanding is the padding is there to ensure a smooth cup so you can’t see the nipple.

It certainly is in my t-shirt maternity bras.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/09/2018 17:02

You lost me at numptys sorry op.
We're not the enemy here

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:06

Thanks, Marmite.
I honestly never thought of that.

The numpty’s are the people on that thread claiming that childhood obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle are causing children to start puberty early...are you one of them then?

daughterofanarchy · 18/09/2018 17:09

My understanding was also so that you can’t see the nipple area. I hope your daughter is okay. Shame on the kids giving her a hard time.

aperolspritzplease · 18/09/2018 17:09

Ooh chip on shoulder much op?!

It's usually to stop nipples showing and protect sensitive nipples from rubbing.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:10

How exactly do I have a chip on my shoulder?
Please elaborate...

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:11

Thanks daughter
As above, I hadn’t even thought of that

My 19 year old dd is a 30G ( slim everywhere else and didn't start her periods until 13.5), prefers padded style bras. She just finds them more comfortable. They cost a fucking fortune mind.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/09/2018 17:15

They aren't padded as much as they are moulded. Stops the nipples showing and adds a level of protection for the nipples which get sore running against clothing.

If you stopped with the insults for 5 mins and thought about it.. .

oooompa · 18/09/2018 17:17

They're moulded bras to cover up the nipple, not padded. Padded bras are designed to make your chest look bigger.

My years as a bra fitter taught me that most young girls getting their first bras much prefer the moulded cup, as they give a better look under clothing.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:18

Yes Aqua, I certainly am!

dingit I just paid £28 for two but they were from the shop where I got her measured. It’s non chain store and she’s been there 30+ years so I’m guessing the quality is worth the price, fingers crossed.

FGS not really any point in being so rude in your opening post.

Now, DD is going through the same sort of thing, we’ve recently bought these:

www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B079DTZ4G3/ref=cts_ap_3_vtp?dpPl=1&dpID=51c0l4MZPwL&pi=SL110&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

Exactly the same things, but are for sale in Costco for around £14 for a two pack.

She feels comfy without any sort of embarrassment that her bra is much different to what her friends have, the material is ever so slightly thicker and doubled, so even if you took the moulded cups out it still provides good coverage IYSWIM.

Best we’ve found so far

Neverender · 18/09/2018 17:33

Definitely for nips

pumpkinyael · 18/09/2018 17:38

Ehm, Idk? I often wear light sports bras or bralettes (some of them have a bit of padding) but I don't really see why some people are so concerned with their nipples possibly showing...

Anyhow, a bit of padding isn't the same as a pushup, is it? I think your DD should probably wear what she feels most comfortable in. There are non-padded wirebras.

WhoWants2Know · 18/09/2018 17:43

My 10yo is a 30B and tends to favour T-Shirt bras from Primark. They're slightly padded because otherwise things get pointy and draw attention. But they have loads of them that are just jersey if you don't want padding.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:44

Thanks for the link, I’ll have a look for something similar in the UK.

Pumpkin we’ve ordered some non padded ones from the little shop where I had her measured and the lady advised no wires yet because she’s too young. I just genuinely wondered why all the ones I found in well known shops had padding.

Apologies if I’ve come across rude, that wasn’t my intention. I just didn’t want comments about my DD being obese or the like as I’d seen it on a post about kids starting their periods earlya d they tore the poster apart. Again, I apologise.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:46

WhoWants2Know my friend literally just messaged to say I’m nuts paying £28 and she’s taking me to Primark later this week 😳

You've started this post looking for a fight. Whilst I am sure lots of us have sympathy for your daughter, you aren't very likeable OP

Beargoesgrr · 18/09/2018 17:52

OP, we have Costco here in the uk, those bralettes have been a lifesaver recently. DD doesn’t want anything that’ll give her any sort of shape, she just wants a bit of comfort. Coverage and support for what she’s playing sports. They wash really well too!

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:54

Thanks jarhead123
I certainly didn’t start this thread looking for a fight. I was simply dismayed to find what I did while looking for more reasonable priced bras for my DD and wanted to know why they make them this way.
Pointing out upfront that I don’t want to be trolled for her height, weight etc was clearly a mistake!

OP posts:
Allfednonedead · 18/09/2018 17:54

The average age of menarche (onset of menstruation) has fallen as nutrition improved because girls reach a particular weight earlier. This doesn’t mean they are necessarily obese, just that they are not stunted by malnutrition.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:55

Bear, I didn’t know we had them here but I’m off to look online, thank you 😊

OP posts:
Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 17:59

I didn’t realise this Allfed, the posters were telling this lady her daughter must have started early because she’s those things etc.

Thatstheendofmytether · 18/09/2018 17:59

I much prefer a padding slight padding on my bra so you can't see my nipples sticking out everytime I get a wee bit cold. I also had just an underwired bra for one of my first bras and it made my boobs ache.
If it's padding as in 2x boost, maximum cleavage then YANBU. If it's just slight padding for support then I think they are the best type of bra.
