I’m guessing this has probably been asked before and I didn’t need to know back then 🙈😂 but seriously, why do bras made for children need to be padded or even lightly padded?
My poor DD is 10, T-E-N dear people!
She doesn’t need a padded bra, the poor kid is huge already which in turn makes her a lovely target for the body shamers during PE and swimming 😡and add to that she just started her periods too, my poor baby!
She’s at that point where crop tops just aren’t supporting her enough and even the dear old gal that measured her said she needs a proper bra even though it’s only a 30A
I have looked at lots online and the majority are flipping padded, why?

Just in case of any keyboard warriors out there, she’s perfect height and weight for an average 10 year old - so her hormones developing early aren’t because she’s unhealthy or obese! Read that on a period thread a while ago, numpty’s 😳

I get my dds from Primark and new look. The reason I mention both is that she had some that were non wired and also not padded whilst being supportive but I can't remember exactly which shop they were from.

Beargoesgrr · 18/09/2018 18:03

.... and I do understand what you’re saying about being pulled apart for your DDs early maturing,
DD has 4 months until she’s 11, but at 5”6 and 8stone 6, and a size 6.5 shoe, it’s hardly unsurprising that she’s showing signs of puberty well underway... expecting that she will have her period in the next few months, surely people on the internet will assume it’s weight related- I’ve just checked she’s on 75th percentile.

pumpkinyael · 18/09/2018 18:05

Pumpkin we’ve ordered some non padded ones from the little shop where I had her measured and the lady advised no wires yet because she’s too young. I just genuinely wondered why all the ones I found in well known shops had padding.

What is it that she needs if it isn't padding or an underwire (although I must admit, I refuse to wear underwire bras, they're just too uncomfortable) when croptops and bralettes aren't supportive enough?

A sportsbra?

I apparently don't know enough about bras for this convo. (I just know what I like/wear, tbh...)

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 18:12

Thanks Thats.
Dinnae my friend is taking me to look for some at Primark and I think there’s a New Look in the city, our local one is tiny and doesn’t stock the smaller sizes, but I’ll definitely look thank you.

Bear, I’ve not looked at her percentile but she’s 4 foot nothing and just over 4 stone so she’s quite tiddly compared to all the other kids in her class. I’m hoping she’ll grow taller as I stopped growing height wise when I was 11
As long as your DD is fit and healthy that’s all that really matters which is how I feel about mine too.

I wouldn't say a 30a is huge? My dd is 11 I've just got her first bras in the 6week holidays got her a set of 2 non wired moulded bras for £14 from Debenhams where I had her measured and another non wired moulded pair from Primark at £6 she's 30a too

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 18:15

Pumpkin, I’m guessing that light padding is the answer from everyone’s response? I won’t know how padded or lightly padded they are until I go to different places I think.
As for wires, I’m only going on what the lady said today. Someone else could advise differently.

Anythingforacatslife · 18/09/2018 18:17

If she is really four foot nothing and four stone then please ask for advice from the GP regarding early onset puberty because girls in general only grow another couple of inches once their periods start. There are exceptions but that’s very unusual.

pumpkinyael · 18/09/2018 18:20

I wouldn't advise differently (based on my own breasts).
I'm an adult and still hate these things. Would anyone want steel enforced knickers? Ball holders for men? Nope. Grin they're just incredibly uncomfortable imo.

A light sports bra (they often have no padding or very light padding) might be good. The fabric is often a bit thicker (less chance of seeing a nipple if there's something she's concerned about) and some look basically like a short tanktop (which is what her peers might still be wearing)...

And they won't restrict movement, which is imo especially important at her age.

Penisbeakerismyfavethread · 18/09/2018 18:22

Ive not RTFT as I’m in a rush - but wanted to chime in. I did dressmaking at college and a girl in our class was making undies. Anyway her market research or whatever showed that padding was much preferred by young teens and tweens and the breasts and nipples were so painful and sensitive during puberty that there could often still be friction and irritation from a thin training bra.
This is something I really remember- and was in agony with my itchy school shirt on my swollen and very sore new breasts. I had forgotten what growing breasts felt like until my milk came in, and I remember thinking the sensitivity and pain was very similar.

Also padding hides the nipple. Kids and teens for some odd reason find nipples embarrassing

pumpkinyael · 18/09/2018 18:22

Bear, I’ve not looked at her percentile but she’s 4 foot nothing and just over 4 stone so she’s quite tiddly compared to all the other kids in her class.

She most likely won't grow a lot after the onset of puberty. Yes, I'd also advice you to contact your GP ASAP.

Penisbeakerismyfavethread · 18/09/2018 18:25

Sorry meant to add, M&S angel range do lightly padded and non wired, and lightly padded with a flexible plastic underwire. Might be worth a look

LemonysSnicket · 18/09/2018 18:26

Yep- so your nipples don't show, although mine push through most light padding, v embarrassing.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 18:28

Anything, I spoke to a health care assistant when her period started and she said everywhere else will catch up but she’s ok for her age. Perhaps I should make an appointment and take her in. The girls in her class are mostly all leggy IYSWIM? There are some boys that are her height though.
My DS is 17 and he shot up when he started puberty so I was hoping for the same for DD but I’ll make that appointment thanks.

Penis, I had forgotten completely about nipples! I was really flat chested until I was 15 but yes, you’ve just reminded me how others were ridiculed for the nips!

OP posts:
Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 18:35

Pumpkin I’m not a fan of wires either.
I’m also guilty of trying to picture men in a pair of ball holders now 😂😂

With metal wires Wink

Growth spurts / puberty isn't the same for boys and girls. Girls usually stop growing 1-2 years after their menarche, I believe.

Boys tend to stop growing (on average) about 2 (?) years after girls. So yes, I personally would take her.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 18/09/2018 18:49

Why so rude? Confused

dingit · 18/09/2018 18:51

Try M&S angel bras. Good value, And check out the sale.

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 18:51

Thanks to all for your opinions, advice and links.
I’m definitely going to shop around but in person so I can have a ‘feel’ of how padded / lightly padded the bras are and I’ll be making an appointment tomorrow to get her checked out, thanks again.

Greatduck I have already apologised up the thread and explained that this isn’t the case.

crispysausagerolls · 18/09/2018 19:24

I am very interested to hear people saying it’s because of the nipples - I never knew this! I had a padded bra because my best friend had boobs early on and I didn’t and wanted to look like I did 😂🙈

Doodlesplodge17 · 18/09/2018 19:25

Crispy, I used tissues! 😂😂

OP posts:
cleopatracomingatya · 18/09/2018 19:28

Yeah it's so you don't see the nipples, I wouldn't worry too much about it!

crispysausagerolls · 18/09/2018 19:33

Doodlesplodge17

Tissues were so unreliable though! 😂

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 18/09/2018 19:36

Is it just me that clearly read the opening post as calling the people on the other thread numpties, not this one? Confused

Obviously early hormones aren’t a result of obesity or poor health and anyone that said so is clearly a numpty.
