AIBU to ask about boob jobs and breastfeeding

Can I ask if / how having a boob job affects breastfeeding? Not trying to be goady at all - I've googled it and it's just wishy washy answers that it may or may not affect it. Interested in how it has actually worked out for people.

Reason for asking is - huge percentage of the girls I went to school with got boob jobs when we left school. I was at a school reunion thing at the weekend, chatting to the other mums about BF (because I was there BFing my 5month old and they started talking to me about it) and I was surprised that not one of them (the ones I chatted to - I didn't do a survey obviously) breastfed. I wondered (but didn't want to ask) if this had anything to do with boob jobs? Or perhaps it's just coincidental / societal?

My friend had a boob job and bf both of her kids so I don't think it is always the case you can't.

I thought it depended on the type of operation you've had. Plus I would imagine that there's a correlation between viewing breasts as a sexual adornment and choosing not to breastfeed.

I think it depends whether the implant was put in from underneath or through an incision around the nipple. If it's through the nipple can potentially affect bf

D2018 · 17/09/2018 22:14

It depends on the type of go on job and how the implants were inserted. Sometimes milk glands are severed during the procedure so being able to BF is harder but its ot always the case. I had a go on job at 17 because I had tubular/ constricted breasts so it's sadly very unlikely I will be able to BF. I didn't have much breast tissue as it was and mine have no doubt been severed as I had tissue expanses in followed by silicone x

I had an breast enlargement aged 20 and first dc at 27. I had the incision through the nipple and implants were put between chest muscle and breast tissue (sometimes it’s put behind muscle). I had absolutely no problems breastfeeding both my dc for a year. The shape of my nipples have changed a lot, I now have massive areolas! Apparently that’s a relatively normal result but I’m hoping to have an aerial reduction sometime next year.

d2018 I had breast enlargement due to tubular breasts and it worked. I didn’t have tissue expanses (not even a clue what that is Blush) though.

I had mine done 10 years ago. No problem with breastfeeding dd at all

Were you able to bf? I have just accepted I probably won't as mine were very under developed and the tissue *expanders (sorry autocorrect took over my last post) stretched out what little breast tissue I had so I'm guessing they have damaged milk glands? X

I imagine if I had a boob job I would have a stupid irrational fear that I would have a possibility of passing something dangerous on . I think it’s from all this scare stories a few tears back or the feeling something unatural was in my body.
I would actually like to have one if I could get rid of the fear but I think that’s how my irrational mind would perhaps work.

I had mine done over 20 years ago under the muscle. Breast fed both of mine with no issues at all. My boobs were enormous.

Zintox · 17/09/2018 22:42

I've had a boob job under the muscle and fed both my children no problem

thiskitten · 17/09/2018 22:55

Really happy to hear it didn't effect feeding for so many of you. Aren't breasts wonderful!
Also happy for my school friends that there is a good chance they chose not to BF for their own reasons and weren't unable to because of boob jobs. Made me sad thinking that decisions they made when they were young were affecting their ability to BF.

I had a reduction and fed both of mine.
