To not fix DS's dented car?

graceandmichael · 17/09/2018 13:45

DS parked his car on the wrong bit, he has the back driveway but parked it in DH's spot as he thought he'd be back out before DH got home. DH came home, obviously thinking it was empty and as he reverses in, he doesn't particularly see what's there as it's really tucked away. He reversed on and boom, hit DS's car. There's quite a bad dent in it. Have been quoted £450 to fix. We don't particularly have the spare money and would have to 'find it'. DS has a few thousand in savings and DH thinks he should pay for it if he cares enough about the dent because of the way it happened.

After opinions please and thanks for reading.

DH needs to pay obviously.

Sirzy · 17/09/2018 13:48

Your husband reversed into someone’s car. Of course he should pay to repair it!

dalmatianmad · 17/09/2018 13:49

So your dh reversed into ds car and you want ds to pay for the damage? Seriously? Hmm

Your dh should have been looking where he was going. I can't believe you even need to ask who should pay!
You poor ds....

CoffeeFountain · 17/09/2018 13:49

DH needs to pay

Graphista · 17/09/2018 13:49

Does your dh not look where he's driving? He owes DS the cost of repair. He wasn't paying proper attention.

MiggledyHiggins · 17/09/2018 13:51

Your husband should pay.

To try to make out like the owner of a parked car is somehow responsible and should pay, makes him a twat.

Waspnest · 17/09/2018 13:52

How did he not see a car parked behind him? Is it like that crap James Bond one that blends into its surroundings?

Wolfiefan · 17/09/2018 13:52

It can’t have been that tucked away if DH managed to cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage to it.
DH hit it. DH pays. You have insurance right?
And hopefully a wake up call for DH. What if it had been a person standing in the drive and he didn’t bloody look? Thank fuck it was only a car. He needs to pay up and not drive like a twat in future.

SmilingButClueless · 17/09/2018 13:53

Completely your DH’s fault as it was his responsibility to look where he was going so he should pay (or go through insurance if you can’t afford it out of pocket).

graceandmichael · 17/09/2018 13:53

No, I said DH thinks that. I was unsure. I obviously assumed DH pays for it, but as DS did park in the bit that no one else would ever be.

araiwa · 17/09/2018 13:54

How is that even a question?

Stefoscope · 17/09/2018 13:54

So your husband reversed without looking properly. Presumably he was also going quite fast to cause the much of a dent. What if someone had been standing there, would he have noticed that? He should pay to get it fixed and be more careful in future.

graceandmichael · 17/09/2018 13:55

Ok my apologies for asking. Thanks for the replies.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 17/09/2018 13:55

It doesn't matter that DS has parked there. DH should have looked, how can he reverse without looking?

BigBlueBubble · 17/09/2018 13:55

If you drive into a parked car you pay for the damage. Who owns the parked car is irrelevant.

SpoonBlender · 17/09/2018 13:56

Yes, DH needs to pay. He is totally responsible for the incident, and being a dick.

It's unfortunate that you'll have to suffer alongside him. On the other hand, it probably won't actually cost £450 - make sure that DS is asking for personal quotes not insurance-boosted ones!

Twotailed · 17/09/2018 13:58

Isn’t it insured?

Fluffyghost · 17/09/2018 13:58

I cant believe you need to ask, of course your husband needs to pay for the damage he has done to somebody else’s car. The fact your husband thinks it is not his responsibility as your son has savings is frankly disgusting and a complete abuse of his relationship. Just because you son parked in a different place does not absolve your husband from driving with due dillegence and ensuring that the area he intends to drive into is clear.

Katedotness1963 · 17/09/2018 14:01

Your husband caused the damage, he should pay for the repair.

AudaciousCockerel · 17/09/2018 14:02

It will obviously be insured but the damage cost may fall just outwith the excess or just inside it.
Obviously your husband should pay. He’s clearly embarrassed by denting the car, but should take more care when reversing. What if someone had been walking there? Would it be their fault if they got run over because he wasn’t looking?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 17/09/2018 14:04

Your DH should pay; he caused the damage with his careless driving.

BMW6 · 17/09/2018 14:06

Strange that you even needed to ask!
Your sons car was stationary, your husband didn't look where he was driving or was going too fast to stop in time when he saw sons car.

Totally irrelevant that you are strapped for cash and son isn't. Pay to fix his car. Take out a small loan if you have to. Tell dh he is a twat.

AudaciousCockerel · 17/09/2018 14:08

Actually, your son would be well within his rights to claim on your husbands insurance.

Loveandlaughter88 · 17/09/2018 14:12

Imo, DS should pay but DH should offer up at least half. For me it would be a case of DS should have told DH he was parking there for a bit regardless of whether he thought he'd be gone before DH got back. That way DH would have known to check to see if the car was still there. If it's 'his spot' then naturally he'd assume its vacant unless told otherwise - however you'd think DH would do a quick scan over his shoulder anyway and make sure the paths clear.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 17/09/2018 14:12

What everyone else said. If your son had been someone else visiting, you wouldn't even be asking this question.
The fact that he has some savings and you don't is neither here nor there.
Your husband is being a twat and should have a serious think about his driving and awareness skills.
