To have a takeaway once a week even though I am dieting

Get weighed on a Saturday morning ... would this be unreasonable?

Depends what you have doesn’t it?

eurochick · 15/09/2018 19:23

It depends on how much you care about losing weight and what you are eating the rest of the time.

CantankerousCamel · 15/09/2018 19:24

Takeaways are really high in calories, we have a cheat day but usually get a Byron burger and halloumi fries or we get a Thai with little noodles

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/09/2018 19:24

Not unreasonable at all, little treats will help you stick to it. Brutal diets rarely work long term.

Choose carefully though.

A580Hojas · 15/09/2018 19:24

I think the first two replies have it covered!

I would have thought once a month was often enough to have a takeaway, whether you're trying to lose weight or not.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 15/09/2018 19:25

Depends very much on the takeaway. If you are having teriyaki salmon and edamame beans ir miso soup no problem, if you are thinking more of an extra large doner then not so much 😉

fat2018 · 15/09/2018 19:27

Yes the kebab was more along my line of thought!

I always had a cheat day when dieting & successfully dieted ( no idea if that's even a word!)
To be honest it's the only thing that kept me going all week was knowing I had a cheat day. I didn't go mad but yes would have a take away and if I stuck to the diet every other day I always lost each week. I did exercise too though to help.

Annandale · 15/09/2018 19:28

It seems a really hard way to do things? I find it almost impossible to keep to a reasonable amount to eat when there's a takeaway in the offing - end up trying to stick to a spoonful of sweet and sour, no rice, half a box of fried pak choi with mushrooms. Isn't it more luxurious to have a massive salad with proper dressing and anchovies or something?

PurpleFlower1983 · 15/09/2018 19:30

Depends how serious you are. When I was serious dieting I had a takeaway maybe once a month.

Fairypiggy · 15/09/2018 19:30

I would say go ahead! As long as it is a once a week thing probably I think it can help you stick to diet longer term. Enjoy!

LBOCS2 · 15/09/2018 19:30

You could have a kebab but just make better choices with it. So - have a chicken shish instead of doner meat, get ALL THE SALAD, have a chilli sauce rather than a yoghurt based dressing.

shapeshifter88 · 15/09/2018 19:32

depends what the calories in it would do to your overall weekly calorie allowance

JLG19 · 15/09/2018 19:35

Yes to kebab! Chicken shish, salad, no dressing - delish Grin

ElainaElephant · 15/09/2018 19:35

Having a cheat day is a really good way of dieting. For two main reasons.

It keeps the metabolism working as the body doesn't think its being starved, and it means you don't deprive yourself completely.

BUT use it with caution. You need to know that you will get back on the plan. Some people, especially those with eating disorders, particularly binge eating, but not limited to them, need to be very careful if having cheat days.

PoptartPoptart · 15/09/2018 19:36

Successful weight loss is a simple case of calories in vs calories used.
Over a period of a week, if the calories you consume are significantly less than the calories you expend then you should still lose weight.

mumofthemonsters808 · 15/09/2018 19:37

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but in a nutshell No, the odds are high you will undo any weight loss in a single meal.Youre also trying to eat differently and it takes time to adapt your diet so that you enjoy the healthy tastes, don't tempt your taste buds to revert back to type and crave familiar foods, I'd say at least a month/six weeks in.

eurochick · 15/09/2018 19:38

If you have a calorie deficit of 250 a day (reasonable for steady weight loss) you could easily undo most of that with a takeaway.

Desmondo2016 · 15/09/2018 19:39

Given that a lb equals 3500 calories, one lardy meal a week, if you are sufficiently calorie restricting the rest of the time then it's absolutely not going to undo all your good work.

SongforSal · 15/09/2018 19:39

When I lost weight, (about 2 stone) I stuck to 1500cal a day, and would wash fish and chips down with a few wines on a Friday night. I also went to the gym regularly, and my favorite snack after a workout was a slice of toasted multi seed bread, peanut butter, with a little spread of nuttela.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 15/09/2018 19:40

I'm doing low carb high fat and on the rare occasion that we're stuck for dinner and end up getting a takeaway, I get a doner kebab tray. Doner meat, lettuce, kebab sauce and mayo in a foil tray. No pitta. It's spicy and delicious and low carb : ) I've lost 3 stone so it's not doing any harm. It's not every week though.

gamerwidow · 15/09/2018 19:42

Depends what you’ve had for the rest of the week. I lost 2 stone by eating carefully in the week and having a takeaway every weekend and a roast dinner or Sunday .
I’d rather go without Monday-Friday then eat what I like at the weekend.

Bambamber · 15/09/2018 19:43

Having a weekly kebab seems a bit much even when not dieting in my opinion.

Tomatoesrock · 15/09/2018 19:44

Yes ywbu. Especially with the slimming world fake aways some of them really delicious. DP was on a serious diet and got a takeaway at the weekend, he soon realised it was a big price to way for the sake of a takeaway and stopped ordering, now it is once a month and he always feels sick after it. He has lost nearly 4 stone.

TomHardysNextWife · 15/09/2018 19:54

I've lost nearly 4 stone now since being diagnosed diabetic (t2) and find that takeaways make me really unwell. They are just so high in fat and salt that my system can't deal with it! Which is a relief tbh. I now keep a ready meal in the freezer (i love amys kitchen frozen veggie noodles or pad thai) so I feel like I'm joining in with everyone else.
