To say that recent McCartney revelations have ruined the Beatles for me?

The recent 'group masturbation' news item from Paul McCartney bleached my eyes. I was born in the 70s but raised on 60s music meaning that rather than be a Stock Aitken Waterman follower in the 80s I was avidly listening to 60s original vinyls of the Beatles, Hollies and so on. I can't listen to Beatles songs now without wondering if it was a song inspired by those 'sessions'....OH and I've just thought about the band name 😮.... My world is crumbling.....

Never a big fan of the Beatles as they were before my time, but I like them more for hearing about the fun they had together.
I hope they cleared up properly after themselves.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 15/09/2018 16:36

I read a fascinating book by their original manager. I must try and dig it out, it's been decades since I read it

RomyAndJulio · 15/09/2018 16:40

I read this years ago (2000-ish) in a biography on him. It’s really not a recent revelation.

FinnegansWhiskers · 15/09/2018 16:42

My childhood memories have been ruined! First I've heard of this....I'm off to Google 😫

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 15/09/2018 16:43

I am sure I have seen a film about John's early life that involved him and school friends in the woods having a session. This was a long time ago not even in last ten years.

placemats · 15/09/2018 16:43

Yep John Lennon is a wife beating scum and he and his new partner Yoko had an 'apartment' in New York. One floor was given over to their love of furs. Imagine no possessions?

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 15/09/2018 16:44

It's a weird thing though. Can't imagine the Nolans doing it.

RomanyRoots · 15/09/2018 16:46

I can promise you Ringo was a red coat, I've seen the pictures of him in his uniform Grin
as I said, gullible.
Fine, if you like their music, that's great but song writers they weren't.
unless Derek and the other co writers are lying, but I'm sure they'd have been prosecuted for false claims by now.

ShackUp · 15/09/2018 17:00

No, Romany that is simply untrue. You are spreading misinformation. I know people are going to say 'chill out' but someone on the internet saying anything in the face of established fact is really insidious.

LizzieSiddal · 15/09/2018 17:01

Romany Ringo only wrote about 2 Beatles songs, that is true and I do t hi k anyone is disputing Ringo being a Redcoat. What is in dispute is you suggesting Lennon/McCartney didn’t write their songs. You’re the gullible one of you believe “Derek” wrote them.

ShackUp · 15/09/2018 17:03

lizzie Grin I'm picturing Reeves and Mortimer going down the drains, for some reason...

bsbabas · 15/09/2018 17:08

Come together right now

DCITennison · 15/09/2018 17:09

Romany, the history of the Beatles has been documented to death. There are really no skeletons left, no side and no version left untold.
Where are you getting your odd ideas from? And how can you be stating them with such certainty?
You’re being a silly billy 😆

TheObwaldhutte · 15/09/2018 17:11

I find his singing voice hard enough to forgive to be honest. I listened to 'Hey Jude' on the radio in the car the other day and laughed out loud. Dreadful overrated group just in the right place at the right time.

FinnegansWhiskers · 15/09/2018 17:12

I can't do links from my phone but I just googled "Who wrote the Beatles songs" 99.9% were written by Mccartney and/or Lennon. There are a few other unknown people named. I can't see a Derek. Who is Derek??

It seems the wanking thing is true 😏

It is well known that Ringo was working as a red coat with his band when he received a call from Lennon asking if he would like to join The Beatles.

Handbaghag · 15/09/2018 17:21

Yes I do know the stuff about John Lennon.. Never liked him as a person but did like McCartney. I would say a group of grown men wanking in the same room is a tad unusual and not the norm as suggested by a pp. Maybe we have different backgrounds... Still I don't feel we need to hear about it. As for the 'Beatles had writers', what a load of tosh. And who suddenly taught Lennon and McCartney how to write then? In the style of their early 'compositions' ? Their first album had songs written by others, clearly credited, as well as themselves. Increasingly more of their own songs appeared on later albums. Nothing hidden. Lennon and McCartney were clearly talented writers, as someone else said, widely documented. Someone's post on MN isn't going to make me think differently. 'Derek' or Romany clearly has an axe to grind 🤔 😂

I have never understood the deifying of the Beatles. They're very meh. If we're talking 60s music, I much prefer Joan Baez and Bob Dylan.

McCartney is a has-been who won't retire with dignity. What voice he ever had was gone; he was completely embarrassing at the Queen's jubilee concert.

DysonDiva · 15/09/2018 17:26

Not a Beatles fan but RomanyRoots is making some very bizarre comments.

Handbaghag · 15/09/2018 17:27

TooManyPaws each to their own, not a problem. Respect for Dylan. (doffs cap) I'm in complete agreement with you over the jubilee thing. Very embarrassing. I was lucky to see Macca in 93 and he was fantastic (if you like Macca). However, if he still wants to make music, good on him. People don't need to buy it, listen to it or pay to see him. He certainly doesn't need the money. But I think he's very talented.

I think it's against MN etiquette for me to say RomanyRoots 'get of my thread', so I won't... 😂🤣😂🤣

Romany, what a load of crap you spout.

The hatred for The Beatles on.mumsnet never fails to make me laugh. Is it supposed to make you superior in some way?

I love Beatles music and ehether you like them or not they had a massive influence on music. Not just music either but also fashion

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/09/2018 17:30

Up until now did you think that group masturbation between men (more often) doesn't take place?

Quite honestly, it would never have occurred to me.

Gersemi · 15/09/2018 17:31

Meh. Listening to the lyrics you can see how immature they were at the time and how influenced they were by drug culture and their various experiments with things like Indian music. I remember reading that in one song (can't remember which) the have a bit that sounds like "Dit Dit Dit" and they're actually singing "Tit Tit Tit" - my reaction to that was that at the time they clearly had a lot of growing up to do as that is something that a 13 year old would think was funny.

But the point is that none of that takes away from the brilliance of at least some of the music and songs, or how it really took pop music forward at a time when the likes of Cliff were singing anodyne, boring rubbish.

As for thinking that a group of men wanking in the same room is unusual OP - ask any man who's been to public school, or indeed any boys' boarding school, he will tell you that it really isn't.

Gersemi · 15/09/2018 17:35

Romany, you do know, don't you, that being a redcoat and being a talented drummer are not mutually exclusive?

As for the idea of people writing everything for them: how come these writers only managed to write the high quality music for the Beatles and not for everyone else? And how come they were happy only to get credit for their work very occasionally?
