Just that really. Surely every generation has its pros and cons?

Every generation gets a lot of flack.

Why are baby boomers getting a lot of flack?

(I’m not a millennial or a BB).

SnuggyBuggy · 13/09/2018 11:52

I love that Socrates quote on the youth. It's always been a thing. I'm a millennial but definitely have my moments when I hear the yoof playing noisy videos on their phones with no headphones.

MenaMecca · 13/09/2018 11:52

Just curious because it seems like a thing to complain about the millenials' work ethics, etc.

Womaningreen · 13/09/2018 11:54

I really don't know
the only millenials I work with are very hard working

I guess that's me generalising! but hard workers, slackers etc appear in every generation. I don't know what the slagging off is about.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 13/09/2018 11:58

Three of my offspring are millenials, they are very different to how I was growing up and infinitely more sensible. Yes mine can be a bit flaky sometimes but then so was I as a 60's born child and my parents born in the 40's. The world is constantly changing and no more so than in recent years. Comparing the modern yoof to oldy yoof isn't helpful.

argumentativefeminist · 13/09/2018 11:59

Older millenials don't get a lot of flack. Babyboomers get a lot of shit because some of them had v. privileged lifestyles due to the economic and social context of their time, and don't recognise this when providing advice/empathy to younger people.
Younger millenials/Gen Z get a lot of flack because: a) people always like to blame the younger generations b) Gen Z have grown up in the UK at a time when political discourses of economic worth/scrounging/work ethic have been intensified to accompany austerity policies c) they're having/are going to have a shit time of it economically, and aren't afraid to blame previous generations mistakes for that.

SnuggyBuggy This one?

They - Young People have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things - and that means having exalted notions. They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones: Their lives are regulated more by moral feeling than by reasoning - all their mistakes are in the direction of doing things excessively and vehemently. They overdo everything - they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else.

I'm an older millennial and I've definitely had unjustified flak Grin. Apparently it's unacceptable to own a laptop when living with parents.

SnuggyBuggy · 13/09/2018 12:01

That's the one!

AllyMcBeagle · 13/09/2018 12:02

I really don't know the only millenials I work with are very hard working

I have heard some Gen Xers complain that millennials are too hard working and don't drink like they used to and/or don't want to spend money having a fun night out because we are too busy saving for a deposit. We can't win 🤷‍♀️

MintMunchie · 13/09/2018 12:03

I've seen at least ten threads complaining about 'baby boomers' for every one I see online that complains about Millennials. It's ridiculous either way. As though any generation is a hive mind. Plus we have multiple generations alive and voting at any one time.

SnuggyBuggy · 13/09/2018 12:05

I sometimes think a combination of extended family living apart, stranger danger, education alongside people within a year of one's age etc. has sort of limited relationships between people of different generations

60sname · 13/09/2018 12:06

It was ever thus with generation wars.

I am an old millennial and laugh when I see some of 'my' traits since I am 35 with two DC.

FaFoutis · 13/09/2018 12:06

In my experience the flak comes from babyboomers. It's because the babyboomers can't or won't admit how lucky they were/ are, so therefore the lack of opportunities must be the fault of the young.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 13/09/2018 12:08

I think maybe millennials get a lot of flak because they don't respect their elders in the way that previous generations did. But in previous generations the "elders" were people who fought in wars and lived through real hardship, whereas today's elders (as a group) haven't really done much which is worthy of respect IMO. Obviously individuals have.

SnuggyBuggy · 13/09/2018 12:09

Also what was cheap and easy for one generation won't necessarily be so for another. When DM was my age and a SAHM they were able to live on my DFs wage but she went almost a decade without buying herself new clothes. Nowadays you could easily find some cheap clothes but struggle on my DFs wage.

Beautifulblue · 13/09/2018 12:09

I freaking hate the term millennials Hmm& you're right when ever I see the word it's always accompanied with negativity.

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 13/09/2018 12:11

Meh every generation and group gives others flack for one thing or another

We are instinctively tribal and in order to define the parameters of the group we are in we try to exalt it above others in order to boost our own world view provide our own group with legitimacy. It's always been this way and probably always will,in terms of societal behaviour but we choose our own individual behaviour and that's the bit that matters ultimately.

Let em all get on with it

serbska · 13/09/2018 12:12

Because it’s in the interest of those in power to crest division and animosity between groups of the population so we fight each other, rather than fighting the establishment for a better quality of life.

FaFoutis · 13/09/2018 12:13

I haven't seen anything negative about generation X though.

AllyMcBeagle · 13/09/2018 12:18

I think you're definitely onto something here.

PrincessWire · 13/09/2018 12:24

FaFoutis that's because we're wonderful and can do no wrong 😆

Or more likely because we're the generation who wield most of the power atm (in general, not me personally. I have no power. Even my rabbit doesn't listen to me...).

Each generation battles with the one above it and the one below it, t'was ever thus.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 13/09/2018 12:25

Well Millennials are hardly the youth though are they? The youngest are in their twenties, and the oldest mid-thirties!

People really need to start updating what they think of as 'young people'd.

Racecardriver · 13/09/2018 12:25

Maybe because they put themselves out there on the Internet morecthan others?

SnuggyBuggy · 13/09/2018 12:26

Ethel I agree with that too. I think some Baby Boomers probably see themselves as mentor figures but many of that generation don't seem to want to engage with the modern world and may not have the necessary life experience to do so.
