I'm very embarrassed and remorseful about this so please go easy ! About 6 years ago after my dad died I had a full breakdown and went into a shop and stole a bottle of perfume (no idea why as didn't need it) , I got caught and police were called to the store ( it's a big department store) , I was shaking and terrified and apologised profusely . The police said that the store had agreed not to take things further and the police said I must pay for the perfume and stay out the store for 9months . I never went back to the store for over a year and paid the perfume plus a bit more back to the store . I don't know why I enemy did this ? I have never even stole a penny chew from a sweet shop and have never been in trouble before with police or after . Iv worked for NHS as a HCA for 16 years and have now been accepted on nurse training course at uni . Thy are doing a dbs check on me now and I'm terrified that this will come up ? Can a telling off from the police be stored on the police database ? The police took my name and address just to check I had no previous convictions or record on that horrible day but they never made me sign anything or arrested me . Thy just gave me a stern talking too and told me to go on my way ? I know I am a horrible human for doing that but I promise Iv never done any other bad things and really want to be the best nurse I can be . I'm terrified this may come up on dbs check ? Iv googled and most people are saying A telling off does not show and you have to have been cautioned or arrested for that to go on your record ? Can anyone please help me as it's making me ill . Any police officers on mumsnet ??

Hi, i'm not a police officer but a Lawyer (including criminal law) and a telling off will definitely not show up on a DBS. It's not formal action in the same way a caution or conviction are. Please don't worry.

Ginorchoc · 14/09/2018 11:39

I think it doesn’t matter what anyone says, you’ll worry until you get it back. Hopefully you’ll be out of your misery soon and can enjoy your career.

Studentnurse1981 · 14/09/2018 12:55

Thank you everyone

Glad you're feeling reassured, hope it all goes well for you.

Studentnurse1981 · 19/09/2018 21:57

Arghhhhh my friend who is on same adult nursing course as me enrolled for dbs check day after me and all ready has her clearance certificate ? Mine still says in progress at the final stage . I can't help but feel this is a bad sign as why did hers come back so quick ? She lives in a different county to me so dunno if that makes a difference but regardless it's making me worry .

Dbs checks often take longer if you have moved house a fair bit. Often that's why some take longer than others.

Studentnurse1981 · 19/09/2018 22:18

Thank you Harley . Iv actually moved house twice in the last 4 years

Friend of mine got charged with an offence , not prosecuted, well before their nursing training and didnt show up on a check. Been a nurse for 11 years now..Wink
Another friend got arrested and charged for shoplifting as a teenager. She became a teacher. Has been for 25 years now.

Op
The officers who dealt with you asked for your name and address so they could see if you had already been cautioned or convicted for theft previously. You hadn’t, so they ticked you off and let you be on your way. That will be ALL they did. Your anxiety is almost certainly deriving from the stress this job opportunity is causing you, as illustrated by your post. You need to recognise and understand the huge significance of situations to our mental state, and how, when we are not mentally at our best, very small issues can appear enormous. You might also want to ask yourself whether you feel guilty about stealing the item; or about doing something that could (IN THEORY) endanger your future prospects. You might want to talk to someone who can help work through those issues.

Sounds to me like you’ve got every chance of getting the job. Whether you do or don’t, it won’t have anything to do with the mistake you made.

Try not to panic so much. It doesn’t help the people you are trying to help and, just as importantly, it doesn’t help you.

Distract yourself until it arrives and then deal with whatever it says. I really think, from reading this thread and all the experiences people have shared, that you will be fine. Flowers

RayneDash · 21/09/2018 10:42

I doubt they could be bothered with the paperwork. I was questioned under caution when I was 20 and my Enhanced DBS is clear.

HellaFresh · 21/09/2018 10:53

I used to do DBS for nhs.

It a BILLIONPERCENT won’t be on your DBS.

I bet you £400

shuthefrontdoor · 21/09/2018 18:09

HellaFresh do you think attending for a voluntary interview will show up and an enhanced check?

WellThisIsShit · 21/09/2018 20:47

Fingers crossed for you

Twotailed · 21/09/2018 20:58

It won’t be on there, please don’t worry. And please be kind to yourself. Grief is a life changing beast.

TheDarkPassenger · 21/09/2018 21:05

Bit late to the party but surely you’ve been dbs checked in the last 6 years at your current job?

HellaFresh · 23/09/2018 12:18

Nope. It’s for convictions, not for anything below that.

Promise !

And even people with things on them get jobs in the nhs.

Unicornandbows · 23/09/2018 12:22

Don't they do a dbs when you work at NHS? As it expires every year? Nhs hr probably have it ran every year...

ThatIsNachoCheese · 23/09/2018 12:31

Cautions and convictions won't show after 6 years if they're on the filtered list.

ArsenicNLace · 23/09/2018 12:47

Hellafresh

That really isn't true fro an enhanced DBS check. It can include 'Other relevant information held by local Police Forces (Soft intelligence disclosed at Chief Police officer's discretion). That's why it's 'enhanced' and differs to a basic and standard.

Having said that I don't think anything that happened with the OP as outlined would be relevant in this case even if anything had been recorded as soft intelligence.

Studentnurse1981 · 26/09/2018 21:03

It still has not arrived despite saying certificate printed on the end tracker?

OP posts:
allotmentgardener · 26/09/2018 22:01

Submit a subject access report to the relevant force. Might cost you a tenner. Then you can find out what they have on you.

shuthefrontdoor · 26/09/2018 22:11

Can you not view online then once it's been posted? Mine still hasn't gone through! X
