To not understand the point of an en suite?

We're moving house and will do extensive renovations. We have the choice of 1 family bathroom and 1 en suite or 2 bathrooms.

Why would I want an en suite? I genuinely don't get it. At present when DH uses the only bathroom we have (which is fairly close to our bedroom), I get woken up without fail (either late night as I go to bed before him or early morning when he wakes for work and I'm still in bed).

Why would I make this even worse by practically having a toilet/shower by my head? What am I missing?

I feel the same, not a fan of en shites so would choose two bathrooms.

dementedpixie · 12/09/2018 18:36

I like my ensuite as its not so far to walk to pee in the middle of the night. No-one is allowed to do a number 2 in it as that is reserved for the main bathroom

Skyejuly · 12/09/2018 18:37

I love ours. We have 2 teenagers and 2 younger kids so its busy. The ensuite is so nice, I can relax at night upstairs and not get disturbed.

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 12/09/2018 18:38

Oh I love an en suite. Nothing like rolling out of bed and into the shower.

user1493413286 · 12/09/2018 18:38

I agree; DH wakes me up if he uses an en suite when we stay places whereas never wakes me up walking across the hallway. Also they tend to be smaller than the main bathroom and I’ve always wondered why I’d want to be using the smallest bathroom in the house.
Possibly it’s nice for a guest room so guests have their own bathroom but normally it’s that master bedroom that has one.

TwllBach · 12/09/2018 18:39

If I was single I would have an en suite that I only ever had a wee or a shower in. As it is, DP has awful bowel movements and loves to spend time on the toilet, so my bedroom would permanently stink of DPs innards Envy

Millybingbong · 12/09/2018 18:39

We get this thread almost every single week. I am fascinated that so many people have an opinion on it. Its a bathroom innit?

PussInSandals · 12/09/2018 18:40

I'm a light sleeper so it would annoy me too. Having said that, when you have kids, isn't it harder to pop to the loo to clean up after, eh erm, night time shenanigans without being caught by the DC? I still remember seeing DM furtively sneaking out of the bedroom, flushed red, hair messy, dressing gown inside out, and knowing what she'd been up to. Not that it's a crime but it was a bit embarrassing!

Plus, having an ensuite means you don't have to share it with house guests so you can leave your Canesten and pile cream out.

Bluebolt · 12/09/2018 18:41

Two bathrooms would be better for me if I was designing from scratch. We have a walk in shower en suite but that was purely that we needed an extra bathroom and the only place was a bedroom. Value wise it depends if the separate bathroom comes at the expense of a bedroom. It could be Better to have a four bedroom with 1 shower and 1 en suite than 3 bedroom 2 bathroom.

CoffeeShortbread · 12/09/2018 18:41

I’d rather have two full sized bathrooms than an ensuite and a bathroom. I don’t like being able to see the loo from my bed. I associate ensuites with ‘too many loo’ new builds or houses where there wasn’t enough space or landing access for a separate bathroom. They don’t scream ‘luxury’ to me. Even if they are big and beautifully designed/fitted out.

The only time I think they are useful is in guest rooms, so guests can have full privacy and you can keep your bathroom ablutions to yourself.

MirandaWest · 12/09/2018 18:42

We used to have an ensuite and a large bathroom. Meant as DH and I sleep naked we could just go to the toilet without needing dressing gowns on.

Now we’ve moved and there are two bathrooms but no ensuite. We are probably closer to the bathroom than in old house Grin. Slightly miss the ensuite but not as much as we thought we might.

MadMum101 · 12/09/2018 18:42

Well it makes clean ups after sex easier, no waking up DC on the way to the bathroom or flashing them if they happen to wake up!

ArcadePixie · 12/09/2018 18:42

I wouldn’t buy a house without one. I get up twice a night. I need it.

confusedandemployed · 12/09/2018 18:42

We had 2 ensuites and a main bathroom when I was a kid. I thought they were amazing then.

Now, however, they just mean more cleaning, toilet flushing / water pipes clanking at night etc. I'd not have an ensuite by choice.

MatildaTheCat · 12/09/2018 18:43

Well if it’s practically by your head you have a point. I love ours because it is ours- nobody else uses it and it’s particularly handy during the night or when we have guests.

New builds seem to prioritise bathrooms and looks over room space which seems silly. I would far rather have the floor space in my bedroom than additional bathrooms.

Now what I really want is a dressing room Smile

hibbledibble · 12/09/2018 18:44

I love our ensuite. It's great to make getting ready quick in the morning, and also great when you have live in childcarers.

lifechangesforever · 12/09/2018 18:44

Wasn't there a thread on this just a couple of days ago?

FaggotsandGreyPeas · 12/09/2018 18:44

I didn't get it until we got upgraded by surprise on our last haven caravan holiday and I had an ensuite with a bath

SoupDragon · 12/09/2018 18:44

I don’t like being able to see the loo from my bed

Shut the door?

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 12/09/2018 18:45

I'm the only female in our house. I'd never even considered the merits of an ensuite til the DC came along and I realised I'd prefer to live a life where I can sit on one loo in the house and not sit in someone's piddle.

The DCs have a shared ensuite between their rooms. It's their bathroom; guests use the main bathroom which remains clean because the DC use their own one, and I can close the doors and pretend theirs doesn't exist and only don a hazmat suit once a week to check it after setting them to work to clear it.

Jimpix · 12/09/2018 18:45

Look.

You have a choice to make about your OWN home. Just make the choice on what’s best suits your family.

There’s nothing else to understand. 🙄

Movablefeast · 12/09/2018 18:46

I guess it’s just what you’re used to. I live in the US and it is the norm here to have a “Master Bedroom” with a “Master Bath” which is basically the main bedroom with an en suite. Maybe because the average size of a home is bigger over here and building techniques are different, I never get a damp smell from my bathroom and odors seem to dissipate quickly. Our toilet is in a separate small room with it’s own door within the bathroom so that helps! We also have two windows in the bathroom.

Personally I love being able to wander in and out of my bathroom and having a separate bathroom form the kids (although they seem to constantly be in here!). I like that I can have privacy from the rest of the family and of course if guests are here. I think en suites are fab!!!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/09/2018 18:46

No-one is allowed to do a number 2 in it
Channelling Kenneth Williams there Grin.
For some reason, over the years we seem to have been a family plagued by d and v bugs. I have always used my main bedroom and it’s en suite as the quarantine area for the culprit so everyone else didn’t catch it every time. Worked very well though I’d admit probably not a good reason to install one Grin

Singlenotsingle · 12/09/2018 18:47

Wouldn't buy a house without an ensuite. We get convenience (Grin), privacy, And we can leave it messy and untidy without anyone seeing.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 12/09/2018 18:49

I love having one!

Means we can keep the children's bath toys and bath stuff in the main one and our is ice and relaxing!
