To not understand the point of an en suite?

willisurvive3under2 · 12/09/2018 18:32

We're moving house and will do extensive renovations. We have the choice of 1 family bathroom and 1 en suite or 2 bathrooms.

Why would I want an en suite? I genuinely don't get it. At present when DH uses the only bathroom we have (which is fairly close to our bedroom), I get woken up without fail (either late night as I go to bed before him or early morning when he wakes for work and I'm still in bed).

Why would I make this even worse by practically having a toilet/shower by my head? What am I missing?

We left our en suite room free for guests I think it's nicer for visitors when they stay to have some privacy. I don't mind walking across a hallway to go to the loo! Saying that if you have space I thought installing one could add value to your house

LongSummerDays · 12/09/2018 19:27

I love my ensuite! When you wake in the night needing a pee and it's only a few steps to the loo. We've got an ensuite to the guest room too plus a family bathroom.

More loos than people in my house! Grin

Racecardriver · 12/09/2018 19:28

We have a lot of guests as we both have international family. It's nice to be able to hop straight from the marital bed to the shower iyswim. We are without an rbsuite at the moment, the bathroom is just down the halway but still a bit of a pain.

WhitefriarsDillyDuck · 12/09/2018 19:33

An ensuite doesn't have to be small. Mine is 10ft by 12 foot and is a full a bathroom. I love it.

greendale17 · 12/09/2018 19:35

I feel the same, not a fan of en shites

I love an en-suite. I have just had one installed in my new house. Handy for the middle of night.

BigFatCurlyHeadedFuck · 12/09/2018 19:39

Bloody love my ensuite! The children have their bathroom and the grown ups have their bathroom that is out of bounds as it is in our room. It's nice and private, the loo seat is never left up, there is never tooth paste spattered on my mirror, never towels left on the floor, I love it!

AnnieAnoniMoose · 12/09/2018 19:41

Just because you have an ensuite it doesn’t mean you can’t be considerate of your partner and use the other bathroom if they’re in bed. It’s lovely to have an adult space & one away from guests. To be able to wander around naked between the shower, wardrobe, sink etc.

PinguDance · 12/09/2018 19:42

What happened to the old sink in a bedroom scenario? That was a thing when I was growing up. I liked that as you could brush your teeth and wash your face then go to the loo separately. Ideally I like a toilet to have it’s own room with a sink and then a bathroom - you don’t seem to get that much anymore which I don’t understand. It’s very useful when ppl at in the shower etc and you need a wee

Amanduh · 12/09/2018 19:45

Ours is amazing. Doesnt wake me up. Luxury shower. Don’t have to go far. Private and away from dc, can use happily without being earshot of anyone. Doesn’t take any bedroom space either, built next to the walk in wardrobe, and still got a very decent sized master and it’s a new build. There are no down sides!

theworldistoosmall · 12/09/2018 19:47

One of the reasons I love staying in hotels, the en-suite. If they can be designed to not disturb the other guest, then this should be achievable in homes. And yes my next house has to have an en-suite.

chocolateworshipper · 12/09/2018 19:48

If you had teenage girls, you'd know why some of us appreciate our en-suite Wink

theworldistoosmall · 12/09/2018 19:49

Pingu, my current house has the toilet and bathroom separately. Many of daft people in the rest of the block have made these into one room. Could also explain why they are hard to come by. Daft people who love knocking down walls.
Another place I lived in, this wouldn't have been possible though.

SevenAndEighteen · 12/09/2018 19:53

All bedrooms in our house have en suites, I think it is very convenient for my children especially for middle of the night wees.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 12/09/2018 19:59

I love my en suite it’s big and luxurious, my guest room also has its own en suite, I love the privacy it gives and my guests appreciate it too, no bumping into each other on the landing.

Dollymixture22 · 12/09/2018 19:59

I would go for two bathrooms -more flexible. If the shower drips in an ensure it’s maddening!!

PoxAlert · 12/09/2018 20:00

They're great.

Means you don't need a penis beaker!

safariboot · 12/09/2018 20:06

I like to sit just wrapped in a towel after a shower and finish drying off, rather than trying to get bone dry and dressed in the bathroom (impossible with long hair I don't like blow drying). That's much easier with an en suite.

JynxaSmoochum · 12/09/2018 20:08

I don't use our current one as it's quite decrepit with a small claustrophobic shower and weak flush on the toilet. When we moved, we had a baby who woke frequently through the night so it was easier to use the more modern main bathroom as I was in and out, rather than winding through our room.

I'm looking forwards to our new shiny en-suite though. Sharing with sons is not glamorous!

Hidethecrisps · 12/09/2018 20:14

Love ours, it’s a nice grown up bathroom not like the children’s bathroom full of bath toys etc. but it’s not too close to us when we’re in bed. We have a dressing room off our bedroom and then the ensuite off that so it provides privacy from visitors/children but also enough distance to not hear (or smell!) things you don’t want to when you’re in the bedroom.

PuppyMonkey · 12/09/2018 20:15

Oh OP, I’m sure if you have a really good think about it, you can come up with some reasons why ensuites might be popular.

Privacy, convenience, knowing it’s a space not going to be used by anyone but you.

I assume you don’t object t ensuites in hotel rooms. Or do you prefer to nip down the corridor? Grin

Are you sure you really don’t get it?

CountFosco · 12/09/2018 20:15

We have an en suite in the guest room. Big attic bedroom so it's out of the way, the cleaners only clean it if we have someone visiting so it's always ready for guests. We share the other 2 bathrooms with our kids. Big house, bathroom on every floor, bloody brilliant.

ohdeardeardear · 12/09/2018 20:16

Ours is the same size as our main bathroom. However, I'm not bothered. It's more cleaning and I don't let DH use it at night as when he switches the light on it wakes me up and he pisses like a race horse.

quackaday · 12/09/2018 20:22

We are just about to build one but I have just decided the rule will be DH does his just-before -bed shits in the other bathroom. Yes.

Madeiramosaic · 12/09/2018 20:32

There is a smallish hallway (think room for a dressing table, trouser Press)between the master bedroom and ensuite in my house, so like PP who has another door to the WC it means the sleeping area and toilet have 2 doors separating them - no odour or noise worries 😊.
