To not understand the point of an en suite?

We're moving house and will do extensive renovations. We have the choice of 1 family bathroom and 1 en suite or 2 bathrooms.

Why would I want an en suite? I genuinely don't get it. At present when DH uses the only bathroom we have (which is fairly close to our bedroom), I get woken up without fail (either late night as I go to bed before him or early morning when he wakes for work and I'm still in bed).

Why would I make this even worse by practically having a toilet/shower by my head? What am I missing?

DH and I love our en suite. DH works shifts so he can nip in the en-suite and shave/shower late at night or unreasonably early in the morning without waking the DC up. Yes I hear him but it's not a major issue.

Following a renovation project, we now have 3 en suites Blush and a family bathroom in a 5 bed house.

Two of the en suites are double bedroom size (about 12 foot square) , the family bathroom is tiny by comparison. The wall between the bedroom and two of the en suites are solid block walls, so no sound transmission, one also has our dressing room to go through as well.

The only poky tiny en suite is off a downstairs bedroom, which disabled MIL uses when she visits on her own. No one else uses it, so no worries about noise or smells.

And I am very happy not to share a bathroom with my grubby toothpaste smearing, forgetting to flush the loo stinking kids!

Jezzifishie · 12/09/2018 20:49

DH seems to think that the ensuite is for 'hobby' storage (boxes and boxes of toy soldiers!!)

AllDayBreakfast · 12/09/2018 21:13

They give you privacy. Imagine if you had guests staying, for example, you couldn't risk walking to and from the bathroom naked.

BuntyII · 12/09/2018 21:15

En suites are all well and good until you wake up to your bed sharing toddler dunking all your stuff in the toilet Blush

Judydreamsofhorses · 12/09/2018 21:20

I’d love one here. My mum is in her 70s now and has quite bad arthritis, and their en suite is a godsend for her for night-time wees because the main bathroom is downstairs.

bellsbuss · 12/09/2018 21:32

Family of 6 and we have 1 ensuite bathroom for us, eldest DD has an ensuite shower room , guest bedroom has an ensuite shower room and we have 1 main bathroom. I love it that I have my own personal bathroom and can't understand why people don't like them. I grew up in a family of 7 with 1 bathroom and it was hell in the mornings. The trend for new builds does seem to be a lot of bathrooms now, our house is 20 years old and was built with 2 but we've extended an added a bedroom and ensuite as we have 4 children. Irl most people buying a house expect an ensuite and normally it's a selling point

delphguelph · 12/09/2018 21:33

So you can shave your vag in peace I guess

PookieDo · 12/09/2018 21:36

I like having one. I don’t have to leave my bedroom in the morning to get ready and use the same bathroom as the kids

CherryPavlova · 12/09/2018 21:40

You reach an age, I think, where you need to pee in the night. Ensuites make it less of an afford. You don’t need to wake up properly.
It’s also easier in the morning not to worry about covering up between bed and bath.

Oysterbabe · 12/09/2018 21:44

I love ours. We've recently had the loft done and have a huge bedroom and ensuite up there. It feels like a quiet sanctuary free of children where I can get ready in peace. Also if we have guests I don't have to worry about getting dressed when I get up to go to the loo.

Mum2jenny · 12/09/2018 21:58

I love ours, it's brilliant as it's only me and dh who use it.

No kids, no visitors, what's not to like!

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2018 22:04

MY friend has one and bedroomStinks Of pee. Not sure If hubby Mis aims

I usually have them at work. I’m a maternity nanny and usually have en suite which is nice

Have one bathroom at home

Not sure if would want en suits as df has smelly poos - as sure I do 😉

Maybe if we did ever have one it would be the wee toilet only

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/09/2018 23:19

it was just becoming a dumping ground

So, instead, you turned it into.... Grin Grin

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 12/09/2018 23:25

We live in a 5 bed house with 2 en suites, a family bathroom and a downstairs loo.
Both en suites are fabulous wet rooms which I can assure you do not smell of piss.

sliceofcheese · 12/09/2018 23:34

I love mine. Our bedroom is plenty big enough and it doesn't make everything stink. Being able to shower or clean up without having to go into the drafty hallway is awesome.

The main bathroom is next to our bedroom anyway so noise is the same from both bathrooms.

thegrinningfox · 12/09/2018 23:39

No point. Hate mine. 2 bathrooms all the way

willisurvive3under2 · 15/09/2018 10:57

Thanks for all your advice. I hadn't thought of the cleaning up after sex scenario. All kids still in cots so it hadn't occurred to me. Mind you we managed to have 3 children in 2 years so DH is steering clear of me at the moment.

I think we'll go for 2 family bathrooms. I see more flexibility with that. I would love my own private bathroom but surely you're meant to share the ensuite with your DP. Which defies the point IMHO. Grin

We have a top floor extension; 2 doors at right angles - one to the bedroom and one to the big bathroom. When people stay they can't see us going into the toilet naked and are put off climbing an extra flight of stairs to use it, though they could if it was needed. Also it takes up less bedroom wall space when the extra door isn't needed.

Bluesheep8 · 15/09/2018 11:08

I love our ensuite shower room. Bedroom is in loft conversion so saves us having to go downstairs in the dark to use the loo in the night. It's also good for when we have visitors as we can shower and get ready without disturbing them

prettygreywalls · 15/09/2018 11:13

If you are designing from scratch is it big enough to have as a jack and Jill ? Ie both bathroom and en suite ? ( adds value and more versatile )

Doghorsechicken · 15/09/2018 11:16

I love having an en suite. DH uses the main bathroom & I use the en suite.
