To think they should close their bloody front door?!

I live in the outskirts of London, on a new estate that has been described by the developers as a "village". Every day I walk from my flat to the train station and back before and after work through pretty much the entire village.

Every single day both times a day I walk past a row of 3 houses. They have back gardens and three stories each. Every single morning and every single evening, no matter what time I walk past, the middle house has it's door wide open, displaying the entire downstairs hallway, lounge at the end and contents of those rooms to the entire street. I can see every time (I look - I'm only human) that the back door is closed. When it's dark all the lights are on so you can see everything.

The lady who lives there is usually either sat in the living room on the sofa or standing in the hallway shouting up the stairs at one or more children. They're never outside and she's never outside. Yet the front door is open every single time.

I just don't get it. Why on earth would the they do this?! I'm sure I AIBU to care so much but seriously - tell me you wouldn't wonder too?!

When we stay in the country/very small town/village, we leave the door open.

People are still in the habit of just dropping in, and it makes the house airy.

We close the door if no one is home.

duchessofsussedsex · 11/09/2018 20:02

But it's zone 3 of London. I should have clarified - They might call it a village but it's hardly a real one. We have regular reports of robberies etc - just like the rest of the city. I'm not sure it's safe to leave the front door wide open.

Even if it is safe, it's fairly busy because again, it's zone 3 London and there are a lot of flats here!

Seems a bit odd. I wonder where the family were before they moved there - maybe a country where this was more common?

Fluffy40 · 11/09/2018 20:03

Maybe she’s smoking something ?

cadburyegg · 11/09/2018 20:04

Well if you are walking past the houses the same time every day presumably the occupants are getting ready to go out, possibly to take the kids to school, if you see a woman shouting up the stairs to them?

That being said I left our front door wide open all day by accident, a few months ago when I took the dc out for the day Blush

stripeswitheverything · 11/09/2018 20:05

She'll soon close it when we get some proper weather Grin

Needahairbrush · 11/09/2018 20:06

Sounds like they are going to get robbed very soon to me ....

ponderingonthings · 11/09/2018 20:07

Kidbrooke village?

Prob just likes air

Needahairbrush · 11/09/2018 20:08

I was thinking kidbrooke too Grin

Seniorschoolmum · 11/09/2018 20:08

I open my front door every day between May and September. I like the fresh air and it stops the hall being dark. Admittedly I’m not in London.

I had never thought it might offend people but if people don’t like it, they can choose not to look.

keyboardkate · 11/09/2018 20:10

Waiting for Godot to enter and sweep her off her feet!

It is very odd I think. But it's her problem.

You sound a little like the Girl on the Train. lol. Walk on and leave them to it.

Bluntness100 · 11/09/2018 20:11

Yeah I'd find that odd too op. Open windows, patio door, or back door, sure but I'd find the front door open all the time unusual.

duchessofsussedsex · 11/09/2018 20:17

Well done pondering!

And I don't work Predictable hours so it's any and all hours! Including at 10pm Sometimes!

is kidbrooke zone 3? zone 3 isnt the outskirts of london??

duchessofsussedsex · 11/09/2018 20:18

Seniorschoolmum, it doesn't offend me - I just find it supremely weird and to be honest I do wonder whether there is some
Sort of untoward reason or consequence.

OP posts:
duchessofsussedsex · 11/09/2018 20:19

Creeper - yes it's zone 3 I said outskirts as most people don't live in London and it was the easiest way to describe it being in London But not central without 4 paragraphs on the location.

QuestionableMouse · 11/09/2018 20:21

Maybe they have a dog that likes to run in and out.

Maybe she just likes the door open.

I honestly do not get this whole obsession with having your house locked down like a vault.

ponderingonthings · 11/09/2018 20:21

I'd guess at just liking the air or new paint problems

It's quite funny that what used to be the ferrier is now a posh expensive London 'village' where someone leaves their door open all day everyday!

Creeper8 · 11/09/2018 20:22

I live in london but not central would have done.

Racecardriver · 11/09/2018 20:25

Bit if she liked fresh air c the back door would be open. It's very strange.

nancy75 · 11/09/2018 20:26

Blimey, kidbrooke must have changed, a few years ago someone would have taken everything in the house & knicked the front door on their way out!

LouLouLoupee · 11/09/2018 20:26

My neighbours 2 doors down always have their door open when they are in.
They smoke, and have a dog that happily wanders in and out.
Admittedly we are not in a city, but we are in a not terribly desirable area of a big town.

Wagonwheelsandjammydodgers · 11/09/2018 20:27

Knock on the door and say you just thought you'd let her know her front door was open Incase of burglaries etc ....see what she says
..and REPORT BACK! I NEED TO KNOW!! 😁

Doubletrouble99 · 11/09/2018 20:27

In many older houses like Victorian ones you have a storm door then a glass vestibule door. My parents always opened the storm doors in the morning and left it open all day but at least there was a glass door inside.

ClemDanfango · 11/09/2018 20:30

Maybe she just likes her door open? It’s her door and house, I just can’t imagine being bothered by something like this ?
