To think they should close their bloody front door?!

I live in the outskirts of London, on a new estate that has been described by the developers as a "village". Every day I walk from my flat to the train station and back before and after work through pretty much the entire village.

Every single day both times a day I walk past a row of 3 houses. They have back gardens and three stories each. Every single morning and every single evening, no matter what time I walk past, the middle house has it's door wide open, displaying the entire downstairs hallway, lounge at the end and contents of those rooms to the entire street. I can see every time (I look - I'm only human) that the back door is closed. When it's dark all the lights are on so you can see everything.

The lady who lives there is usually either sat in the living room on the sofa or standing in the hallway shouting up the stairs at one or more children. They're never outside and she's never outside. Yet the front door is open every single time.

I just don't get it. Why on earth would the they do this?! I'm sure I AIBU to care so much but seriously - tell me you wouldn't wonder too?!

It's a strange thing for anyone in Kidbrooke village to do; the area may have changed since it was home to the Ferrier but it's a thoroughfare for hundreds of school children every day as well as for commuters getting to the station. I suppose it could just be that your routine happens to coincide with hers and that her door is closed the rest of the time. I'm going to be there tomorrow so may have to look for the house in question!

My front door is open whenever I’m home, pretty much year round. I HATE feeling shut in.

Anyone that doesn’t ‘approve’ can jog on 🤷🏻‍♀️

PlatypusPie · 12/09/2018 00:38

I live in nice friendly road in a pleasant suburb of London and that would be regarded as barmy behaviour here, so OP I agree.

Smallhorse · 12/09/2018 00:42

Why on earth do you care ?

Monty27 · 12/09/2018 00:51

Why does it bother you, is she lowering the tone?

Jux · 12/09/2018 00:57

We leave our front door open a lot of the time, even now the weather's getting cooler, it helps air flow through the house. We're suburban/country town.

LoveAGoodChat · 12/09/2018 01:00

I remember on the first series of benefit street white Dee used to have her front door open practically all the time, she would be sat in her armchair or sofa with a good view of what was happening outsideGrin

AjasLipstick · 12/09/2018 01:02

My front door is often open but I do live in rural Australia. There's a "high street" out the front....I say high street but it's a bit spit and sawdust really.

I have it open because I"m happier that way. I like feeling the breeze and seeing the outdoors.

SilverySurfer · 12/09/2018 01:04

Their door, their choice.

LoveAGoodChat · 12/09/2018 01:07

Grin imagine if the lady with the open front door ( that the op is talking about) is actually a mumsnetter and is on this thread Grin

delphguelph · 12/09/2018 01:12

Al fresco living maybe?

BackToTheFuschia7 · 12/09/2018 01:13

Yanbu. It is a bit weird. Most houses can be aired sufficiently with windows and patio doors open. Maybe she’s really nosy and likes to people watch her neighbours.

Airaforce · 12/09/2018 05:41

In my area if you leave your front door open & you're not vigilant then pretty much anything light and not nailed to the floor will be stolen.

Bluesheep8 · 12/09/2018 06:13

Yes it's unusual, I suppose but why would you care? I might notice it but I wouldn't be concerned or comment.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 12/09/2018 06:24

Our front door is open most of the time. In our case it's because it's a bit shit and doesn't always 'catch' properly so swings open again even when you think it's shut. We don't live anywhere with neighbours though

Aridane · 12/09/2018 06:35

find it weird that my neighbours big bedroom window is open EVERY night - even in snow - so this would freak me right out! How very odd!

I do that - I wake up with a mild headache if I don’t have the bedroom window open at night

tenredthings · 12/09/2018 06:46

If the owner is in and there's kids in the house I fail to see how having the door open would be a burglary risk. Maybe she just doesn't like being closed in.

ponderingonthings · 12/09/2018 07:41

I'm going to be walking past the area today, will certainly be looking out for said house as I'm sure will any other local MNers Grin secret handshake if we pass each other? Wink

Dunkling · 12/09/2018 07:50

I leave my front and back door open all through the summer, it's lovely to have the air.

But in winter the front door is still open ALL the time, even into the evening, albeit only the top half (stable door). It's even open with snow outside and the woodburner on inside. I have horrendous anxiety and can't bare feeling cut off from the world and need the light, sounds and seeing people going about life outside.

At the moment I'm in dread of the darker evenings and less doors open!

I look odd, I don't care!

PrimalLass · 12/09/2018 07:55

Sometimes I leave my front door open - what's weird about it?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 12/09/2018 08:02

I’ve been leaving the front and back doors open in the hot weather. I live in a small cottage and the breeze was lovely. (I do live in Devon though and it’s quite normal here)

PolkerrisBeach · 12/09/2018 08:06

I wouldn't leave the front door open but yes to windows open, even in cold weather. Our loft is insulated to the hilt and it's far too warm without ventilation. Neighbour obviously happy with what she's doing. She's not doing any harm so let her crack on.

I also never lock the door during the day which strikes horror into MNetters who like to live in Fort Knox.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 12/09/2018 08:34

My backdoor is often open, I like the breeze circulating. My neighbours frequently have their front door open presumably for the same reason as me.
We live in new builds that are so well insulated that unless we have a big area open to let the fresh air in we'd cook.

MeMyselfand · 12/09/2018 08:49

Maybe she cooks kippers and cabbage every day for dinner so has to air the house.
I bet if there was burglars around hers would be the only house they wouldn't go near
