AIBU to find fbook a bit boring these days

Don't get me wrong I still check in on friends and family and have a general nosey and add my own updates, message mates etc - but it seems like there's loads less social media activity these days and a billion adverts. I wonder if it is because they've changed the settings for the news feed or am I out of touch with newer platforms as tech has moved on? I don't have a mobile phone so can't use whatsapp (so I might have isolated myself there, my fault)....and hardly use instagram - maybe I should check that out more, is that where everyone is now? I find there's more interesting stuff going on on mumsnet :) ....maybe I'm a fbook bore ha! Where are the people at these days?

You don't have a mobile phone ??? Wow ! Grin I find FB mindnumbing too. Not really got into Instagram either. Love twitter though, more informative and newsy.

PhoebefromFriends · 10/09/2018 21:31

I agree, I noticed a significant shift after the data sharing scandal. I think more people are being conscious of what they share. I do use Twitter but more for my job, keeping up to date with the latest research in the area I work and I'm fairly new to Instagram so can't comment on that.

daphine2004 · 10/09/2018 21:32

I came off it in January for the same reasons. Still have messenger, but nothing else. Don’t miss it at all!

ShirleyPhallus · 10/09/2018 21:33

It’s absolutely dullsville. Only about 5 people that I follow seem to regularly post on it.

All other posts are targeted advertising. Very close to deleting it entirely but want to pull down all my photos from it first

Vonvon222 · 10/09/2018 21:34

I think Instagram is more popular now.
I find FB is full of adverts too and it's the same crap everyday.

Maybe everyone is on Twitter...I can't get the hang of it.

The only reason I'm still on is due to being a member of a few groups that only arrange things through fb.

WhoWants2Know · 10/09/2018 21:35

It kind of depends on what you use it for. In my case, it's replaced eBay as my main source of secondhand stuff. And somehow (possibly because of Mumsnet) I've joined lots of funny groups like Terrible Art in Charity Shops and Posh Tat People Buy, that crack me up.

MrsMozart · 10/09/2018 21:35

I've not used it since FB updated it's privacy settings et al. Had a quick squizz to see what it wanted me to agree to it being allowed to do, but it seemed to run into a warren of sections and I didn't have the mental bandwidth to investigate fully, so I've not agreed and it won't let me on and I haven't missed it.

I come on here and a couple of horse forums and that's enough for me.

Sammy900 · 10/09/2018 21:35

Also I've noticed in my news feed there are regular updates from people who I never really communicate with, so it's like I'm scrolling through distant contacts info which is nice but kind of not relevant to friends I am actually interested in....what am I doing with my time I wonder sometimes

Teen DDs wouldn’t touch FB with a barge pole. They prefer Instagram or Snapchat but only use them for messaging. They never share photos.

I can’t be bothered with it much. I had problems with photos being shared by a family member without permission so I stopped. Many of my friends hardly update it. I mainly use it for events and one group I’m in but that’s it.

LusaCole · 10/09/2018 21:38

YANBU, I hardly post at all these days.

PhaedrasChocolate · 10/09/2018 21:41

I said the same thing to dp this morning! It's clunky and the algorithms are all wrong.

I used to be quite a prolific user, but I genuinely can at the moment.

PhaedrasChocolate · 10/09/2018 21:41

*can = cba

ShirleyPhallus · 10/09/2018 21:42

I come on here and a couple of horse forums and that's enough for me.

How do the horses make any sense typing with their clunky horse shoes on?

Theweasleytwins · 10/09/2018 21:43

I guess it depends on what you follow

I am a member of several twin mum groups and crochet groups so check most days for advice and good patterns😁

Sammy900 · 10/09/2018 21:46

I agree with all of the above - I get the most out of it with group events and messaging mates/ family - newsfeed is yawnsome. It's a shame in a way as I used to enjoy it, and have some brill photo's on there and have used it like a like a journal/blog. I can't get my head around twitter either and instagram is just pics isn't it....can you message peeps on it? I'm not sure if I can use snapchat on my laptop.

Mumsnet is the best for topical / social convo and I find I'm giving it more time than fbook

There's no way I'm getting a phone - but yeah feeling more isolated now :/

Vonvon222 · 10/09/2018 22:06

Yeah instagram is just photo sharing but yes you can messsge on there too.

Sammy900 · 10/09/2018 22:10

Thanks Vonvon222 I might go and see if everyone is there having a party or something :)

cardibach · 10/09/2018 22:11

As with everything Facebook related, it depends on your friends. Mine are still all pretty interesting, and I’m in some great groups with intelligent and interesting opinions.

MrsMozart · 10/09/2018 22:12

Shirley They have special little stylus thingies that hook onto their shoe Grin

Sammy900 · 10/09/2018 22:30

Does anyone know if I can upload photos to instagram from a laptop? Thanks x

OP posts:
stopgap · 10/09/2018 22:42

After the scandal, everything about it felt instrusive, so I deleted FB. I’m on Instagram in a very small way, and for whatever reason it is much less of a time suck.

rainbowsandsmiles · 10/09/2018 22:43

Yeah instagram is just photo sharing but yes you can messsge on there too.

You can also upload videos (stories)

CutesyUserName · 11/09/2018 10:09

Ads, memes, inspirational quotes, share-this type shite - all seem to be taking over. About two or three years ago it was much better. Now it's just copy and paste bollocks for the most part.

TheDowagerCuntess · 11/09/2018 10:29

YANBU.

I don't post anything on there any more.

Not that many of my friends do either, so it's basically just turned into another source of news for me. Not a social network at all.

Bit pointless really.

RhymesWithOrange · 11/09/2018 10:33

I agree. I only have FB to keep in touch with geographically distinct f&f.

I cleared all my ad preferences in my settings and assiduously blocked loads of advertisers over a sustained period and that helped a lot.
