Am I the only middle aged woman on MN with lines and wrinkles?

I don't mean to sound arsey (honestly!) but if you are over 45 and have no lines or wrinkles, this thread is not for you.

I'm always reading posts on here where people say they are, say, 50 and have no wrinkles or are regularly taken for 5, 10 or more years younger.

Am I the only one who does have lines and wrinkles? My facial lines are similar to say, Naomi Watts in this photo - but without the beauty.

Not everyone has wrinkles past 50. My mum is past 80 and I am past 50 and we don’t have any.
I don’t look any younger for not having wrinkles and think I look my age. My hair is pretty much grey, mums is Snow White, I have a couple of liver spots on my hands, middle aged tummy and a few gaps where I once had teeth.
It is just genetics and my reward for having oily skin all my life.
I don’t have a skin care regime and just wash with tree tree oil face wash, I have never worn make up or moisturiser as it just made my skin more oily nor have I spent my life hiding from the sun.
I suffered with acne well into my 30’s and still get the odd spot now and have always had open pores.

Aspenfrost · 11/09/2018 12:51

Every 80 year old has wrinkles. Don’t be silly.

Aspenfrost · 11/09/2018 12:51

In face everyone has wrinkles.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/09/2018 12:56

Honest she doesn’t and i am sure she would rather have wrinkles than the much more serious heath problem she does have.

Yikesisthatmeinthemirror · 11/09/2018 12:59

Really, what at 80. If her skin hasn't sagged with small wrinkles, she should present herself to have her genome tested as she has what the world craves.

Brambleboo · 11/09/2018 13:02

I'm 48, am crepey under my eyes and have quite deep lines at the sides of my mouth. I can also see my jowls are starting to head south. It does get me down at times, but my skin is otherwise quite clear and my complexion is rosy so I try not to feel too bad. I have quite a few greys, but my hair is so thick they are easy to hide.

The thing I think ages me the most are the bags and dark circles under my eyes. I look like I've been in a boxing match when I don't wear concealer. A make up artist on AMA suggested a peachy concealer to counteract the blue and it definitely helps.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/09/2018 13:07

She has bat wings and saggy skin on her arms but her face is smooth. So I should have said facials she has no wrinkles.
Her legs don’t work anymore and she has been in a wheelchair for a number of years so it is hard to say if she has saggy skin around her knees.
My knees are one place that does show age not so much with saggy skin but the skin is darker and rougher.

Seriousquestion09 · 11/09/2018 13:10

No Ivaidea I meant early 50s but she used to get mistaken for my sister not that long ago but recently she has hadsress of illness and life- I know my own mother thank you

She has relatives same age as her who look younger but don’t have same life problems.

Although I've already said that I would happily give up my comparatively young-looking face for better overall health and mobility, I don't think it's entirely weird that people occasionally find out your age in the course of conversation without it being some kind of narcissistic 'go on, ask my age' non-sequitur. A recent example I can think of off the top of my head: a nostalgic conversation with colleagues about children's TV. I started talking about a couple of old favourites from the 1970s, and one colleague said "you're not old enough to remember them?" I assured her I was and she immediately demanded to know how old I was, her manner (which was actually quite rude!) suggesting she genuinely thought I was lying about being able to remember them. And I definitely don't give off an air of caring about it because I don't wear make up and beyond making sure it's washed and brushed, I do sod all with my hair either! It is purely a symptom of this fucking awful genetic condition I live with.

Zucker · 11/09/2018 14:02

To the people who say that they are told they look 10 years younger than they actually are: How does this come up in conversation?

I dearly hope you're not making people inwardly cringe by asking them to guess your age ....are you? ( I know one of these people and if the ground would open and swallow me it would be a blessed relief)

What this person does is asks them to guess and then she gives her age. Then there's the awful pause where the guesser is supposed to gasp and say NOOOOOOOO NEVER you must be lying. Confused

SerenDippitty · 11/09/2018 14:02

When I was in my mid 30s people did occasionally think I was in my 20s but that is a completely different thing to being 44 and looking 20. The years do catch up with you.

SleightOfMind · 11/09/2018 14:07

I’m 44 and look much better now than in my twenties.
I may have had smoother, firmer skin then but I was anxious, stressed and uncertain.

I’ve got great laughter lines around my eyes and smile lines at the side of my face that make me look like I’m slightly amused at something.

I’ve got sprinklings of grey in my dark hair which I like watching get bigger. I have no plans to dye.

I’m honestly much more attractive now. I look like a real person who knows how to enjoy life.

SleightOfMind · 11/09/2018 14:09

Also, whenever a woman over 35 tells me their age or how old their DC are I automatically say ‘No! You don’t look it/old enough.’

It’s just polite.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 11/09/2018 14:18

@CommanderDaisy

butterflysugarbaby - that's the one

Are you having a dig at me, CommanderDaisy, as one of those mid-40s women who claim to look 20 year younger? Grin

I genuinely was asked for ID when buying a bottle of wine in August 2018. I don't normally get ID'ed, but as a PP said, it's sometimes the build and outfit (like a casual summer dress) that deceives people.

Plus dim lightening and possibly poor eyesight!

dailyshite · 11/09/2018 14:46

Nah sorry, don't believe it. She MAY have looked 30 from 50 feet away (if she dressed young/trendy) but close up she would look at LEAST mid 40's. No 50 year old looks 30 sorry. Not one

I was sitting about 2 foot from her (and have already said that she didn't dress young / trendy) and never met her before in my life so have no vested interest in what I am saying to you about this.

She said she had just had her 50th birthday but going on her skin and facial features she looked younger than the people I know in their 30s (bar the hair). In fact she looked fresher and healthier than some of the people I know in their 20s!

It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not (except for making you sound slightly obnoxious), but it's true.

LeftRightCentre · 11/09/2018 17:29

I can assure you nearly everyone who looks like that has had work done.

maxthemartian · 11/09/2018 17:37

I'm rubbish at telling people's ages anyway but I was gobsmacked watching a recent film with a frequently nude (and make up free) Tilda Swinton in it. Mid fifties and seemed to have no signs of aging at all, but she also didn't look "done" in any way or crazily worked out. Just... how?

Sarcelle · 11/09/2018 17:51

I am 53, and I regularly got told I looked like I was in my 30s until very recently. But something has changed. I don’t have many wrinkles but I now very much look my age, not sure why. Bit more jowly perhaps. Age catches up with you regardless. I am not vain so not bothered. I have lots of relatives who did not make it to their 40s so being over concerned with looks rather than health seems odd to me.

Clionba · 11/09/2018 17:53

maxthemartian a very good cosmetic surgeon.

JaneJeffer · 11/09/2018 18:02

Tilda Swinton (autocorrect hates that name) looks like she's never been outdoors in her life.

maxthemartian · 11/09/2018 18:05

She had boobs like a teenager! How?!

Clionba · 11/09/2018 19:36

How do you think? Hmm

IcedPurple · 11/09/2018 19:57

I really don't think Tilda Swinton has had 'work' done. She hardly wears make up and doesn't conform to Hollywood ideas of what an actress 'should' look like, so I can't see her going for Botox or surgery. She just has fantastic skin. And she does have wrinkles, just fewer than you'd expect for a woman in her late 50s (a classmate of the late Princess of Wales, apparantly).

As for the other actresses mentioned above, I think ironically, actual surgery tends to look a lot less 'dramatic' than less invasive procedures like fillers. Helen Mirren, for example, has had a jaw lift at the very least but somehow doesn't look 'worked on' even though she's in her 70s.

Another example: Did anyone watch that 'Shirley Valentine' series on ITV? 59 year old Annabelle Giles, who has had a full face-lift, looked so much fresher and more 'natural' than 50 year old Lizzie Cundy, who has 'only' had fillers. Those god-awful fillers never look good, and the sad thing is, women are having them at a younger and younger age.

SerenDippitty · 11/09/2018 20:35

I do think Helen Mirren looks worked on. No 70 year old woman has a jawline like that naturally.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 11/09/2018 20:41

Tilda is late 50s Shock.
Fuck me ! I’ll have what’s she’s having please !

Causcasian people as a rule are screwed
For ageing . White skin wrinkles and ages and dries up. White privilege / ha !

Asian and black women age way way better . In general

I also agree that having seen people die young - it does feel inappropriate to stress about aging . But we do don’t we !
