This photo was took by a relative of someone in a care home for the elderly of a meal given today.. Aibu to say old people much better than that.

That's shocking. No veg or anything and it looks like it was chucked at the plate.

Hormonalrage · 09/09/2018 23:18

Post all over social media with the care homes name on it.
That should rattle them.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 09/09/2018 23:21

YANBU but many younger people are in care home settings with hideous food too. I won’t even mention the quality of hospital food.

MissesBloom · 09/09/2018 23:23

Heartbreaking Sad I worked in care homes for a few years and ended up leaving because I couldn't cope with the treatment by other staff members and nothing ever being done about it. The food was never this bad though. Not enough is done to keep them safe and well fed

sweethope · 09/09/2018 23:24

hormonal it’s getting plastered all over facebook with the name of the care home on it. Loads have shared it. It’s appalling isn’t it, especially when you consider how much the care home receives for each resident.

Singlenotsingle · 09/09/2018 23:25

With garden peas and grilled tomatoes? Yum !

BabySharkDoDoDoDoDo · 09/09/2018 23:27

Misses, me too.
I worked in a care home for 18 months and eventually walked out at the beginning of a shift as I couldn't stand watching these poor people be herded about and fed like cattle with no compassion or warmth :(

IdahoJones · 09/09/2018 23:27

Single I'm not sure you've entirely grasped the point

sodabreadjam · 09/09/2018 23:31

Horrible. Chips look hard and dry - very difficult for elderly people to eat. As others have said, no vegetables. Nutritionally very poor.

Becles · 09/09/2018 23:34

Email it to the cqc (inspect homes and food is a big thing) and local social services complaints and ceo (who are likely to be paying for many residents)

MorningsEleven · 09/09/2018 23:36

Where's the dignity in that? Awful.

claireblueskies · 09/09/2018 23:37

That doesn't look very inspiring.

Portion size seems fine (it always surprises me how reduced old people's appetites are) but the actual content looks a bit grim...

Ollivander84 · 09/09/2018 23:39

Sad I work as a carer, not in a care home but I go to people's houses
I'm so particular about food, one woman loves it when I make her kitchen roll into a shape so I do a little fan, or I'll fold it around cutlery and cut toast into teeny appetising triangles
I can get most people to eat by offering small portions or leaving a chocolate bar and few refuse a hot pudding with custard!
Taste is important and the taste buds dull (I think) and often people want v sweet things
Nutrition is such a huge thing too, especially if you're dealing with people with dementia or who are underweight already

ShovingLeopard · 09/09/2018 23:42

That's made me very sad. Absolutely shocking that this is being served up to helpless old folk. Fully support the naming and shaming in this instance.

I won’t even mention the quality of hospital food.

Just spent 3 weeks in children’s hospital with my daughter. The food was so bad she lost weight.

Ollivander84 · 09/09/2018 23:54

Weirdly I liked the hospital food at the one near me - I had cheese and onion pie, mash, gravy, veg and treacle sponge and custard. That was a standard meal and cups of tea came in pairs with cake or biscuits Smile

MissesBloom · 09/09/2018 23:55

Baby shark it's sickening isn't it. For all the good Carers who worked their bloody asses off there were just as many sub standard/can't-be-arsed type staff. Didnt help that they were earning a pittance although quite how you can blame a complete lack of compassion on your shitty wages is beyond me. I walked in one day and a lady had been left for hours upon hours in a horrendous condition which I won't share with everyone. When I questioned why everyone just shrugged. I cleaned her up, got her comfy and walked out of that place for good. I was luckier than that poor lady and the others stuck there. They just deserve so much better.

Ollivander you sound like a lovely person and an excellent carer.

Ollivander84 · 09/09/2018 23:56

Oh I forgot the children's ward story though. I spent a fair few weeks in one at a different hospital when I was a child
Breakfast - weetabix and a plastic cup of milk
My mum "where's the drink?"
"Well you can put the milk on the weetabix or drink it and have the weetabix dry"
My mum HmmConfusedShockAngry she ended up going buying me food

Lockheart · 09/09/2018 23:56

Tbh that's about the only level of food which my grandmother would eat, so that looks about right to me. She has severe dementia and difficulty eating. She won't eat veg, and can't have anything sloppy like porridge or soup or baked beans as it won't stay in her mouth. Can't have anything too small like peas as the same will happen. Can't even chew things like crusty bread as it's too hard. Fruit is difficult, and mostly limited to apple or banana slices.

Her appetite is also so small now we're just grateful she eats anything.

That would be a perfect meal for her. So I'll withhold judgement on this one. If you're compos mentis and are able to chew properly then yes it's a bit shit, but if you're dealing with residents with various problems then you have to work within their capabilities and tastes.

Ollivander84 · 09/09/2018 23:59

Misses - I have NO patience and after years in customer service I am not a people person Grin I prefer cats/dogs
But there's always something you can do like putting perfume on for someone, or lotion on their legs, or remembering they prefer strong tea, or they like being washed with hot water not warm - that will make them feel more human/individual

Even something like when I put perfume on for work - I choose it depending who I am going to. One younger male loves a very expensive one so I wear that. A woman I go to who is blind, I ALWAYS wear the same perfume so she knows it's me

LanaorAna2 · 10/09/2018 00:05

Trying to work out where a brutal loss of personal dignity arises in being offered The Noble Chip.

OP, YANBU on the whole though - the care home would have charged the old person about 35 quid for those 14 chips. Now that is a disgrace.

theworldistoosmall · 10/09/2018 00:05

It's so easy to be outraged and pass judgement on a plate of food.
However, the person could have made the choice to not have any vegetables. There might have been more food on the plate before the picture was taken.
As for the portion itself, it's possibly a normal portion.

HelenaDove · 10/09/2018 00:06

There would be a fucking riot if they served that in prison!!

BackforGood · 10/09/2018 00:07

I'm with Lockhart - I'd need to know the full story, not express shock and horror at one photo.
I know many, many people who wouldn't want veg with ham and chips.
