FABRIC CONDITIONERS

I worked in the textile industry in the late 60's, in the dying department where I worked we used a water softener, but actually it was a water soluble lubricant applied to the cloth before it was made into garments, this was to prevent the high speed sewing machines from overheating and keeping the needles cool by reducing the friction just like a car needs oil for the same purpose, so this is how Fabric Conditioners come about, this substance attracts dirt like most lubricants. Reading a label on a bottle of Lenor recently, they say it is harmful to Aquatic life, also not to be used on children's sleepwear (in that case why use it on their daywear?) added to that it makes clothes more flammable, plenty of reasons there not to use it at all.
I use a Supermarket own brand Non Bio washing liquid and no FC this leaves my clothes smelling good, OK they are not so soft but less greasy and less likely to attract dirt, Please Mums don't waste money on Fabric Conditioners.

Also, fabric conditioners can irritate children's skin. Especially children with eczema.

FlyingElbows · 07/09/2018 07:22

Thanks, Dave. You do you and I'll do me. Not sure what being a mum has to do with it though.

JacquesHammer · 07/09/2018 07:27

We’ve found the opposite. DD’s skin is far better when her clothes have been washed with conditioner.

Honestly these “don’t do this” posts are tiresome 🙄

SerenDippitty · 07/09/2018 07:34

I gave up fabric softener about a year ago to see if it would help my itchy skin and it did. And I was only using ones like Ecover or Surcare.

Nutkins24 · 07/09/2018 07:36

Agreee they’re gross.

steff13 · 07/09/2018 07:46

It probably advises against using it on children's sleepwear because it makes clothing more flammable. Here, children's sleepwear has to be flame retardant. Day wear does not. So, if using fabric softener makes clothing more flammable, it defeats the purpose of flame retardant pajamas.

I use fabric softener. However, I know people who have had a lot of luck with wool balls in the dryer. You can even add essential oils to them to make your clothes smell nice.

Mums don't waste money on Fabric Conditioners.

How about dads?

Washedwithrain · 07/09/2018 07:49

in the dying department

Sorry but that did make me snigger.

Eliza9917 · 07/09/2018 07:52

Fabric conditioner makes towels less absorbent too.

justilou1 · 07/09/2018 07:54

My washing machine repair guy said that they fuck ul washing machines with gunk too. He said you’re better off using a tablespoon full of vinegar in your final rinse to get soap residue out of your towels than adding anything else to the wash. I tried it once and haven’t looked back. My towels are lovely and last longer too!

CrochetBelle · 07/09/2018 07:57

Thanks Dave, don't know how I've managed all these years without you to mansplain this to me.

Laiste · 07/09/2018 07:58

I like using it. None of us are itchy or have burst into flames yet.

I manage to remember not to use it on towels or swimming costumes.

When i don't use it our stuff is not as soft and creases more and doesn't smell as nice.

But thanks.

raviolidreaming · 07/09/2018 07:59

Oh, bore off. I'm capable of deciding for myself whether I prefer my laundry after I've used fabric softener or not.

MrsStrowman · 07/09/2018 08:00

Thanks for mansplaining. I'll make my own choice thanks.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2018 08:01

I like it, so despite your dire warnings will continue to use it, thanks. I like comfort or lenor pure. My clothes feel horrible without it and I like the smell. No skin issues and no spontaneous combustion

ChampooPapi · 07/09/2018 08:02

@justilou1 ok that's it, I'm giving up fabric conditioner. I have used viniger to clean the machine without clothing and it works well so your post has definitely inspired me to go for it.

I did stop for ages because of the harm to the environment but then I just started buying it again, brainwashed by some advertising I expect

PeridotCricket · 07/09/2018 08:03

Never use it...but yes, thanks Dave,.....

dementedpixie · 07/09/2018 08:04

And non bio liquid is bad for the inside of your machine as it contains no bleaches so Please Dave don't waste money on non bio liquid

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 07/09/2018 08:04

Who died and made you boss Dave?
I'm reasonably sure most of us here are adults and can make that choice themselves whether to use fabric softener or not 🤔

wafflyversatile · 07/09/2018 08:06

What are children doing in bed that requires more fire retardant clothes than in the day? Hmm

Schroedingerscatagain · 07/09/2018 08:07

Just use soap nuts!

No chemicals, lovely soft clothes and only costs about £10 for a whole years washing

If you want a smell add essential oils, excellent for sensitive skin and asthmatics

MissMisery · 07/09/2018 08:15

Waffly - falling asleep with fags on.

MinorRSole · 07/09/2018 08:22

Ah, so that's why they come home from school with yoghurt/glue etc all down their top. I just thought they were messy buggers, should have guessed it was my fault Hmm

ShotsFired · 07/09/2018 08:24

Come on Vipers.

I think Dave was trying to be genuinely helpful here, there's no need for a pile on.
