FABRIC CONDITIONERS

I worked in the textile industry in the late 60's, in the dying department where I worked we used a water softener, but actually it was a water soluble lubricant applied to the cloth before it was made into garments, this was to prevent the high speed sewing machines from overheating and keeping the needles cool by reducing the friction just like a car needs oil for the same purpose, so this is how Fabric Conditioners come about, this substance attracts dirt like most lubricants. Reading a label on a bottle of Lenor recently, they say it is harmful to Aquatic life, also not to be used on children's sleepwear (in that case why use it on their daywear?) added to that it makes clothes more flammable, plenty of reasons there not to use it at all.
I use a Supermarket own brand Non Bio washing liquid and no FC this leaves my clothes smelling good, OK they are not so soft but less greasy and less likely to attract dirt, Please Mums don't waste money on Fabric Conditioners.

responses seem very spiteful generally though.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2018 12:39

I use bio powder. Cleans better than non bio liquid.

Whether Dave was right or wrong to word the OP in the way that he did isn't really the point - so no need to be so sarky.
My GP told me to stop using fabric conditioner when my DD developed eczema as a baby (she's now in her 40s). I did - and my skin improved too, so I've never used it since. I'm with Dave.

Yeh very cheap so don’t buy into the eco friendly ‘marketed’ ones.. I got mine in a bulk food shop. You put about 3 or 4 in the bag and put it in and that’s it

Ok ta, there's a whole foods near me so I'll try in there first then.

I never use it!

QueenCity · 07/09/2018 13:00

I only started using fabric conditioner 2 or 3 weeks ago. I always thought it was just a daft marketing thing until I read the AMA from someone who developed detergents. Clothes come out of the dryer with barely any creases, feel soft and smell nice.

KatieMarieJ · 07/09/2018 13:01

Lenor make a professional fc that is indicated for towels. Just saying.

AhoyDelBoy · 07/09/2018 13:04

Yes great informative thread wasn’t it @QueenCity, I linked it in above. Somehow I think that OP is a little more knowledgeable on these matters than this one Hmm

QueenCity · 07/09/2018 13:08

@AhoyDelBoy Yes, I loved that thread. Didn't spot that you'd linked it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/09/2018 13:10

Dave is right, as far as I’m concerned.

Awful stuff, makes the laundry all limp and smells just like that vile smell they use on sanitary towels now.

MetalMidget · 07/09/2018 13:10

If we don't use fabric conditioner, our washing comes out as stiff as a board! We live in a very hard water area though.

AhoyDelBoy · 07/09/2018 13:10

I got fabric conditioner today because of it Grin first load, of many, in the dryer now. Hopefully I get a good result.

Orchiddingme · 07/09/2018 13:14

Unfortunately I've used fabric conditioner since mine were babies and now they really complain if I don't- that the towels and socks are like boards/stiff/can't put them on. I'm keeping going...

Slightly off topic but whilst the soapnuts worked amazingly well on coloured clothes, I found that on whites & lights there were dark bits of shell amongst them at the end of the cycle.

Any ideas please?

LovingLola · 07/09/2018 13:21

That list is very offputting!

Snugglepiggy · 07/09/2018 13:33

That list confirms it for me.As a household despite being careful we must be sending enough stuff into the water system as it is,but the least we do the better.Plus just another plastic bottle that may or may not get recycled -or shipped off to landfill elsewhere.Even if I'd noticed slightly less fragrant clothes that were stiffer (which I havent)I would like to think when our DGCs are our age we've actually improved the quality of the environment for them ,not trashed it further.

TheSpottedZebra · 07/09/2018 13:37

I don't use it as it is mostly made from animal fat and I'm a strict veggie and try to avoid that type of thing.
And we have super hard water, so the combination of that and the fabric conditioner sludge wrecks the washing machine to soon.

My clothes soon soften up when I put them on.

AhoyDelBoy · 07/09/2018 13:39

@QuirkyKate did you have them in a small bag?

QuirkyKate · 07/09/2018 14:32

I did, Delboy, which is why I am baffled. A little drawstring one with plastic toggle, for both washes several times.

SilverySurfer · 07/09/2018 15:40

I loathe all fabric conditioners -they all smell vile. Never used them, never will.

Bloodylucky · 07/09/2018 15:45

So it’s ok if my child buys fabric conditioner? My boyfriend? But I can’t coz I is Mum? Ffs.

restingbemusedface · 07/09/2018 15:54

It’s disgusting stuff and can cause severe anaphylactic reactions.

My ds was 6 months old, the one time I used lenor he broke out in a serious skin allergy, needed antibiotics and had to use paraffin cream on him for about 3 months. He used to claw at his skin in his sleep til it bled. The doctor diagnosed eczema, however once it cleared (overnight with homeopathy) it never ever came back. Have never touched fabric softener since.

Schroedingerscatagain · 07/09/2018 16:47

I buy my soap nuts from Amazon £9.99 for a kilo

There are actually 2 type apparently and quite a few threads here on mumsnet about them

I’ve not had any escape from the calico bags and my whites have been fine, tumble dry beautifully soft

The recommendations are 3/4 in soft water areas 5/6 in hard water area like ours re-use 5 times

We have hotel white bedding that comes out pristine and white school shirts have stayed white

I have very bad asthma and can’t cope with anything that smells but have never had a problem with soap nuts
