To think that this year’s blackberry crop is poor?

We usually do really well for blackberries from late August onwards but this year they are all small and sour. I thought that the hot weather might have brought them out early but they’re just a bit bobbins. Are they like this anywhere else? We’re in Warwickshire.

Same in Switzerland!

jarhead123 · 06/09/2018 21:02

I'm also Warwickshire & I agree.

whojamaflip · 06/09/2018 21:03

I'm just over the border in Glos and we've had tons of blackberries! Really big and sweet as well - have frozen pounds of them ready to make jam at a later date Confused

Winegumaddict · 06/09/2018 21:03

The were/are amazing in the east I've been picking them for weeks. I think they're going over a bit now thoigh sadly.

Pollydidntputthekettleon · 06/09/2018 21:03

I'm in Gloucestershire and I think the blackberries have been rubbish! Must be looking in the wrong places 😂

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2018 21:04

We hardly managed any either. Sloes were equally poor. I don't know whether they cropped early or they got nobbled by the 'beast from the east'

Marmite27 · 06/09/2018 21:05

They’ve been fab in Yorkshire!

The nettles and thistles have done well, though.

GerdaLovesLili · 06/09/2018 21:05

Our regular patches are crap this year. It looks like the devil has pissed on them already. :-(

GerdaLovesLili · 06/09/2018 21:06

Excellent crop of sloes though! :-)

Singlenotsingle · 06/09/2018 21:07

What can you do with sloes? (Not keen on gin!)

ThanksItHasPockets · 06/09/2018 21:07

You might be right, Kitten. My parents have an old damson tree which usually gives masses of fruit but it lost all its blossom in the harsh ‘spring’ weather.

Picked kgs of them in various places and have been for >6 weeks.

Must be varying by region?

Theworldisfullofgs · 06/09/2018 21:07

Lack of rain...

weaselwords · 06/09/2018 21:08

They’ve cropped prolifically but early here in Birmingham. Masses of them by the QE hospital.

CatchingACold · 06/09/2018 21:09

Amazing in Yorkshire- but also over about 2 weeks ago.

you may be too late.

museumum · 06/09/2018 21:10

Mine haven’t even ripened yet (south Scotland)!!!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 06/09/2018 21:10

No, they are fab here!! Made loads of jam and sorbet!!

ThanksItHasPockets · 06/09/2018 21:10

Maybe. We were out picking from mid-August and got a fair few but there were lots still green and red then. There are usually a few ‘waves’ of them.

Knittedfairies · 06/09/2018 21:10

We had a lot on the allotment, but early this year.

delphguelph · 06/09/2018 21:11

Someone on another thread earlier today was raving about their. Smug even. Sloe gin and feckin compote for yog and stuff.

delphguelph · 06/09/2018 21:11

About theirs!

Arrrggggghh

Matilda1981 · 06/09/2018 21:12

I’ve never seen so many blackberries! We started picking 2/3 weeks ago and still got thousands that are still ripening now!

redsummershoes · 06/09/2018 21:12

they've been great in the se.
a bit smaller than previous years, but very sweet and tasty.
