To think that this year’s blackberry crop is poor?

We usually do really well for blackberries from late August onwards but this year they are all small and sour. I thought that the hot weather might have brought them out early but they’re just a bit bobbins. Are they like this anywhere else? We’re in Warwickshire.

South Yorkshire/Derbyshire border been around for a good few weeks already. Definitely feast not famine here.

WhirlwindHugs · 06/09/2018 21:34

S'okay! I just really like blackberries 😂

I'm a bit gutted actually, some of the really good bushes near us were cut back mid harvest!!

OftenHangry · 06/09/2018 21:34

Even dog roses are nit yielding this year

Amanduh · 06/09/2018 21:34

We’ve never had as many as this year! They’re everywhere!

SherlocksDeerstalker · 06/09/2018 21:35

So how does everyone deal with the worms then? Drown, suffocate or ignore?!

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 06/09/2018 21:36

We've had loads and loads here. A good year for dogroses too, as someone mentioned them.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 06/09/2018 21:37

Nope. At the van in west Cornwall in August the hedges were teaming. We made huge crumbles and kids ate hundreds. Was lovely. Natures bounty

c3pu · 06/09/2018 21:40

There are hundreds of different microspecies of blackberries. Some are big and juicy and sweet. Some are small and firm and sour.

Basically, find a different bush.

I went picking about a month ago as the hot weather brought them out early. Got an absolute fuckton of big fat sweet juicy ones, and made some wine and jam with them.

I picked tons... in end July...

AlphaBravo · 06/09/2018 21:44

They were out at peak about 5 weeks ago. Early this year because of the weather.

redsummershoes · 06/09/2018 21:48

worms.
cold salty water.
then rinse.

Fireworks91 · 06/09/2018 21:51

Loads on the isle of wight. Pretty small in the main though, but started ripening early. Have a few bags in the freezer at the mo, bonus of having overgrown hedges😂

Too early for sloes isn't it? Thought they should be picked after first frost? Our lane is full of them, and rosehips as well.

Elderberries more few and far between at the mo though sadly.

PrimalLass · 06/09/2018 21:51

Actually bramble covers any similar looking thorny fruiting plant. Some of them are not as good to eat as the specific blackberry one

In Scotland we just call them all brambles, usually. I wouldn't use the word 'blackberry'.

redsummershoes · 06/09/2018 21:53

sloes make your mouth turn inside out if you eat them before they had frost...

Pebblespony · 06/09/2018 21:55

Ridiculously good crop here in west of Ire.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 06/09/2018 21:55

Worst year for my damson tree in the 9 years we've lived here - no damson gin this Christmas Shock

Mum2jenny · 06/09/2018 21:56

Only heard the term blackberry when I moved to England. In Scotland they are brambles.

cariadlet · 06/09/2018 21:56

I'm in East Sussex and have loads in the garden. They started much earlier in the year than usual. I've been picking them as I needed them throughout the summer and last weekend froze a load for the winter. Quite a few have gone over, but still plenty of red ones on the bushes.

The plum tree, on the other hand, has produced nothing and last year it was groaning under the weight of all the fruit.

DeadCertain · 06/09/2018 21:58

Fabulous crop here in Herefordshire, every time I walk my dog I have a feast!!

CherryPavlova · 06/09/2018 22:00

Both West Sussex and Isle of Wight have had real bumper crops which started early and are still going well.

vampirethriller · 06/09/2018 22:01

They were brilliant in Yorkshire, I got 16lbs from my dads local park. They're gone already though.

wonkylegs · 06/09/2018 22:03

NotTheMrMenAgain our damson crop was fab this year (I was making Gin only yesterday) although we were afflicted with lots of plum moth maggots on the damsons and plums - I think the wet spring & hot summer screwed with everything but in the NE we actually faired quite well.

MissEliza · 06/09/2018 22:04

I'm in Berkshire and I've found this year's crop to be quite juicy but not sweet. I'm assuming very hot weather doesn't make good berries.

campion · 06/09/2018 22:09

I picked lots of lovely juicy ones in Warwickshire nearly 3 weeks ago. Sorry about that OP but I think there were some leftWink
Some in the freezer and some in a delicious blackberry and apple crumble - 1 portion left not for long

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/09/2018 22:11

Brilliant in Kent, I’ve just cut hundreds of bushes back and left them on our bonfire, they’re invasive.
