To make rashers in the microwave at work?

Luxembourgmama · 06/09/2018 12:59

I'm thinking i might streamline my morning by eating breakfast at work. I do this sometimes and it means i'm not hungry by 11am. So far i've only ever had yoghurt or cottage cheese. I was thinking of maybe doing scrambled eggs in winter. But would I be unreasonable to do rashers in the microwave. i have one of these www.amazon.co.uk/Sistema-Microwave-Easy-Bacon-28-7/product-reviews/B076DFYL44/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_paging_btm_2?pageNumber=2&reviewerType=all_reviews&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8 so i wouldn't make a mess. I get in very early...

stick a lemon in a bowl of water into the microwave while you're eating your bacon and then give it a wipe with kitchen roll. That will get rid of any smells.

serbska · 06/09/2018 13:30

Nooooo it will stink of bacon so badly!

user1485342611 · 06/09/2018 13:30

By the way people heat up soups, curries and all sorts in our microwave. As long as they keep it clean I don't see the problem.

Luxembourgmama · 06/09/2018 13:32

The kitchen is a separate room in that it has doors that can be closed. I am that terrible colleague who does dreadful stuff in the microwave TBH. But only once has another colleague mentioned it and in a slagging way. I might try it at home and see how much it stinks.

The trouble is the kitchens are rarely that separate in an office and there is also very rarely an option to open a window.

There is a man sits opposite me and eats fish (cold) at his desk every single lunchtime - makes me gag! Revolting.

I don't think anything should be consumed in a no window office that smells! :(

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 06/09/2018 13:34

I'd only be annoyed as the smell of bacon would make me hungry!

TittyGolightly · 06/09/2018 13:35

Is there a separate microwave for vegetarians?

brieislife · 06/09/2018 13:36

Go for it. It would certainly smell a lot less offensive than my colleague’s asparagus cup-a-soup that she has EVERY SINGLE MORNING! Envy (not envy)

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 06/09/2018 13:36

Not at all unreasonable. The kitchen is for cooking food in, yes bacon smells but so does curry and fish and a multitude of other foods.

Do people really limit what food they eat at work for fear of the smell?? What strange places you must work in.

AshenFaced · 06/09/2018 13:37

I think bacon would be less controversial than eggs. For most people it's a much nicer smell.

We have a canteen and people bring bacon, egg, beans etc back to their desks. The only complaint from the rest of us is that it's making us hungry!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 06/09/2018 13:37

Is there a separate microwave for vegetarians?

Why would a vegetarian need a separate microwave I assume most food going into a microwave is on a plate or in a container, it is not going to come into contact with the bacon??

EdisonLightBulb · 06/09/2018 13:39

I love a well rendered bacon sarnie myself and if the bacon was already cooked at home and mixed into the egg and the mush was in a bowl with cling film very tightly fastened over the top I would forgive you.

But raw bacon cooked in a microwave? YABU for even considering eating that let alone the associated smell of nuked pig.

AgentJohnson · 06/09/2018 13:39

I love bacon but someone cooking it in a communal microwave is just eurgh.

PavlovianLunge · 06/09/2018 13:40

I can’t imagine any vegetarian, vegan, Muslim or Jewish colleagues being happy about it. It’s a shared kitchen which everyone should use considerately, and that, in my opinion, means not cooking eggs, bacon or any strong smelling food.

LaurieMarlow · 06/09/2018 13:40

Wouldn't rashers in the microwave be disgusting (as well as antisocial)? You need them nice and crispy.

Do scrambled eggs instead (I don't have the knack, but my colleague proves it can be done). Or make savoury muffins at home and bring them in.

LaurieMarlow · 06/09/2018 13:41

I've just seen the post about asparagus cuppa soup for breakfast. That's just vile.

chemenger · 06/09/2018 13:42

We don’t have a microwave in our kitchen. Someone put a whole fish in it, not realising that the timer didn’t work. The fire brigade were not impressed. Fish are surprisingly flammable.
I moved offices once to an area where top secret stuff had been done, security was so strict that no cleaners were allowed in. The inside of that microwave was coated in a thick layer of baked on gunge, and the fridge was similarly covered in dried on gunge. I assume all the former occupants died of food poisoning. Cleaners don’t clean kitchen equipment, we do it ourselves so there was no excuse for the group not keeping things clean. They were all men.

Bimgy85 · 06/09/2018 13:42

Ew ffs change your breakfast preferences Hmm you can't go around cooking what you like in a communal kitchen work area with very limited facilities such as a microwave imagine the smell out of there all day!!! Microwaves are meant for reheating sealed containers with food in them

parkermoppy · 06/09/2018 13:44

I personally wouldn't because I have a couple of Jewish colleagues and they also use the microwave. It's very easy not to eat bacon, as delicious as it is

CaMePlaitPas · 06/09/2018 13:44

Eat your breakfast at home.

pasturesgreen · 06/09/2018 13:45

Please God, don't inflict your eggs and bacon on your colleagues! Hugely antisocial to eat smelly food in the office.

Have a yogurt or get your arse in gear and eat breakfast at home if you insist on having a fry up.

hartof · 06/09/2018 13:46

Just asked my office and nobody would care. However, cook a mushroom lasagne and you're in trouble!

dueanotherchange · 06/09/2018 13:47

Eat your breakfast at home.

I get up at 5.50am and leave the house at 6.20am. If I were to eat breakfast at home I would be ready for lunch at 10.

That's why I eat in the office but not rashers

Not everyone has the luxury of eating breakfast at home.

Sisgal · 06/09/2018 13:48

Gross

CocoCharlie83 · 06/09/2018 13:48

It may have been only once that it has been mentioned to you OP but it will be many more times that they have thought it or said it to others.
