To wonder why a lot of drivers don't worry about breaking the speed limit when there are speed cameras?

Just that. I'm always baffled as to why so many drivers blatantly break the speed limit on roads where there are speed cameras? And then they try and force me to do the same by coming up the bumper? They do it when I'm driving at the speed limit, not going slower.

AIBU not to want to get points on my license, or to have to pay a fine? I've been caught twice in 10 years and the insurance premiums go up. Never again!

These drivers act like they own the road and should be allowed to go as fast as they want. Do they realise how easily they could cause an accident? If there were to be an accident in front of them, they would never be able to stop in time. It's so dangerous.

We've had plenty of threads on slow drivers. I just thought I'd mention the worse menace of drivers going far too fast.

I wouldn't say they don't worry - more that they don't realise there are speed cameras there.

ToothTrauma · 03/09/2018 19:46

Where I live, everyone knows which cameras work and which don’t. It never seems to change Confused Personally I try not to speed but you can definitely tell where a working camera area is.

Stefoscope · 03/09/2018 19:47

Sometimes the cameras aren't actually switched on. I agree though, they shouldn't be speeding.

MaxPepsi · 03/09/2018 19:48

They probably know that the speed cameras are not actually switched on.

AlphaBravo · 03/09/2018 19:51

Why are you infuenced in your speed by the idiot behind you. Slow down gradually when they do that. If you speed up when they do you're just as much of a crap driver.

Onesmallstepforcatkind · 03/09/2018 19:52

I wonder this, especially with the smart motorway cameras.
When I went on a speed awareness course they said that as digital imaging technology is so cheap it’s unlikely that many cameras aren’t switched on so I wouldn’t rely on that being the case!

Beautifulblue · 03/09/2018 19:53

You might be like my nan & think that there are speed cameras every where when they're not 😂 I doubt people are knowlingly speeding when they hit a speed camera, they probably slow down for it... not exactly the right thing to do but it's not unusual.

PattiStanger · 03/09/2018 19:55

I was driving on a motorway with roadworks and an average spped check recently and was also surprised by the number of cars overtaking those who were sticking to the limit. I thought those cameras were always on

Racecardriver · 03/09/2018 19:56

They probably know exactly where the cameras are and break just before they get to them/know which ones are real cameras and which are dummy cameras etc. It's very easy to figure out if you drive the road every day. No excuse for tailgating though.

TwllBach · 03/09/2018 19:58

I often wonder this on roadworks with average speed cameras

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 03/09/2018 19:58

Speed Cameras can be switched on and off????? Shock

I never knew this. Whats the point in putting a speed camera somewhere and then turning it off????? The mind boggles.

Lizzie48 · 03/09/2018 20:04

I don't let them force me to go faster, I usually break gently and hold my speed. It's very scary, though, and I really don't like it. You're supposed to maintain at least a 2 car gap behind the car in front.

Because they know that once they have more than 12 points they can go before a judge and claim hardship if they loose their licence and then get the totting up disqualification waived.

For me, if you have that many points you've been warned enough times...

whoareyou123 · 03/09/2018 20:08

Are you sure you are driving at the speed limit? Ie how accurate is your speedometer?

Also you shouldn't get prosecuted for going a bit (possibly up to 10% plus 2mph) above the speed limit.

Lizzie48 · 03/09/2018 20:11

I've been caught speeding in the past and, believe me, the speed I was clocked at was the speed recorded by the speedo. Anyway, it's not a chance I want to take.

TeacupDrama · 03/09/2018 20:12

they may know that the cameras are not working or they may know that though speed limit is 30 and ,40 that the cameras are normally set to about 35 and 46 instead while no doubt it is legal I don't actually think cameras are ever set at 30 or 40 as in a car with average speedometer and thickness of needle it is very difficult to gauge whether you are actually doing dead 30 or 29 or 31mph, it is not however; difficult to gauge that you are doing either 25 or 35 instead of 30

Lizzie48 · 03/09/2018 20:12

36 miles an hour in a 30 mile limit, one of them was.

One thing to consider. My DH works as a principal engineer in Highways (bridges). He's told me that the Council speed cameras are placed in accident black spots, as a way to prevent accidents. It's not just random, they're there for a reason, whether working or not.

I’d be wary of the 10% plus 2 mph advice.

In the area I live in they are really cracking down so 31/32mph in a 30 zone and you will get points and a fine.

I do agree op! I have cruise control and set in to 68/69mph on a dual cw the amount of people who tail gate is unbelievable - I do not slow down to speed up just because some people drive like twats.

thenightsky · 03/09/2018 20:27

I've been driving for 33 years and got caught at 37 in a 30 zone two years ago. I would always do 30 normally, but had a twat in a white van up my arse, shouting obscenities at the windscreen and waving his fists. I was within yards of the 40 sign.

I got an awareness course and no points.

Bbbbbbbb2017 · 03/09/2018 20:44

In our town there are only two issuing cameras out of all the boxes. We all know which two work...

Funnily enough thougg everyone sticks to the limit on the hill they sit with a mobile camera at the bottom of on a regular basis
