Dd (almost 11) wants to watch Grease this afternoon. Any thoughts? Is it suitable?

OP posts:
AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 03/09/2018 17:04

It is packed full with sexual references, rudeness, other adult themes and general cheekiness. It will all go over the head of the little ones and be great fun for the adults.

I laughed almost nonstop when I re-watched as an adult, amazed at how much i didn't get as a child, and that it's considered a family film.

TeenTimesTwo · 03/09/2018 17:28

DD's school did it as a y6 leavers performance - suitably edited.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 03/09/2018 17:30

Personally I think it sends out a bad message to girls that they have to change to attract a boy. Sweet virginal Sandy has endless problems on the boyfriend front, but when, she tarts herself up, he can't get enough her.

Well, actually, we find out he'd all along been trying to win her back by becoming a jock. He actually put a lof more work in to her than she did.

My main issues with the movie are the "did she put up a fight line" Envy I mean seriously, was that ever OK?

And the dodgy game show host trying to date rape the contestants.

onemouseplace · 03/09/2018 17:35

I still remember watching at my Nan's when I was about 7 and her looking horrified at the bit where Rizzo says "What do you think this is, a gang bang?" Which had gone totally over my head, and still did for many years.

Notquiteagandt · 03/09/2018 19:07

@LongSummerDays snap! School play in prep school. Estimated age about 9/10 also.

It was the sleepover film of choice in childhood.

StoorieHoose · 03/09/2018 19:11

grease 2 is NOT rubbish!! cool rider is a fantastic song Grin

Horridhenry88 · 03/09/2018 19:16

I saw it at 11 and was very confused by won't go to bed till I'm legally wed!

amusedbush · 03/09/2018 19:22

I was a small child when I first saw it (mid 90’s) and I was obsessed; my mum tells anyone who will listen that I made her and my dad wear their leather jackets at the dinner table BlushGrin

It all went totally over my head until I was a teenager! Probably helped by the fact that my mum had taped it when it showed on TV and they had edited out the broken condom scene, etc. I didn’t see that unti I got it on DVD years later.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 03/09/2018 19:42

My only concern is this. ..

Someone very recently told me that sandy was dead and the whole film was about what her life would have been

'i saved her life-she nearly drowned" line is to signify she actually died and everything after was but a dream.

Probably a load of crap but it stopped me in my tracks for a moment!

PavlovianLunge · 03/09/2018 19:58

There are various theories that Sandy and/or Danny died. Probably all nonsense.

Hi was 5 when it came out, most of my friends saw it at the cinema. We all sang the songs and acted oyr scenes in be playground. It all went completely over our heads. I saw it very time it came On tv that and the rude parts didn't register untillI was much older. It as actually part of the 5 year old culture back in the day 😜. Your dd will be fine watching it.

FaithInfinity · 03/09/2018 20:17

I would say a lot went over my head when I was a kid, but I watched a Betamax (oh yes!) copy recorded off the BBC and some of the dodgier scenes were cut - definitely the bit with Rizzo and Kenickie in the car was!

rainbowsandsmiles · 03/09/2018 20:22

And the dodgy game show host trying to date rape the contestants

Whaat? I don't remember that bit. Confused Which bit was that?
Anyway, I watched it as a kid and any rude bits/adult themes sailed right over my head.
Just liked the high school, and all the singing and dancing!

gingeristhenewblack43 · 03/09/2018 20:37

What was her name? The girl at the prom in the green tight fitting dress snd the game show host was all over her?

Jammydodger81 · 03/09/2018 20:43

Marty! And she definitely says she caught Vince Fontaine trying to slip something in her drink.

Jammydodger81 · 03/09/2018 20:45

It wasn’t a game show though, it was the dance competition, National Bandstand.

And Grease 2 is amazing Grin

rainbowsandsmiles · 03/09/2018 20:52

Marty! And she definitely says she caught Vince Fontaine trying to slip something in her drink.

Thought you must have meant Marty at the dance competition, and was going to say he was only chatting her up, he didn't try to date rape her!
I have watched Grease bazillions of times and as an adult too and can safely say that line has completely sailed over me if he said that.
I'm going to have to watch it again, aren't I Grin

StoorieHoose · 03/09/2018 21:02

Thank you JammyDodger81! Grease 2 is amazing. I’d be a Stephanie over a Sandy any day!

8misskitty8 · 03/09/2018 21:03

Marty said that she caught Vince Fontaine trying to put aspirin in her drink at the dance. That’s what her ‘character’ though but it was probably something stronger.

Grease 2 has maxwell caulfield in his gorgeous younger days but it is also far ruder in places. ‘Reproduction’

sunshineandsnow · 03/09/2018 21:05

When I was 11, I performed in a stage version of it at school!!

Witchofwisteria · 03/09/2018 21:06

Haha I must be a shitty mum because I've watched it with my 4 year old. He loves to do the hand jive lol

YouBetterWORK · 03/09/2018 21:12

I'll be singing this line in future thanks to liz70

"You know that little shit; he'll be looking like a tit..."

GrinGrinGrin

rainbowsandsmiles · 03/09/2018 21:13

Marty said that she caught Vince Fontaine trying to put aspirin in her drink at the dance. That’s what her ‘character’ though but it was probably something stronger

Well, that completely sailed over me as I don't remember that bit at all Grin

8misskitty8 · 03/09/2018 22:34

rainbowsandsmiles. She tells Rizzo when they are in the bathroom combing their hair when Rizzo tells her she skippped her period. Just before she spreads the pregnancy rumour.

slippermum · 03/09/2018 22:40

Grease got released in the UK on 14th September 1978, 40 years next Friday!
