To think Glastonbury High Street is full of fake people?

Just that, really. I visited over the weekend. I have no doubt some people are genuinely into spirituality and magic but it seemed a lot of people were trying way too hard to be wacky and it seemed to be full of “look at MEEEEE” types of people. Laughing and talking very loudly to draw attention to themselves and with a sour whiff of superiority and arrogance about them.

I’m sorry, I’m sure there are loads of nice people there. I just hardly met any! On the plus side the people who own the shops full of tat left us alone apart from an initial greeting when we entered.

Maybe it was a long journey. Maybe it was camping. But the majority of people irritated me! I’m sure I irritated them too and they are glad to see the back of miserable me Wink

The tor was a nice experience though I felt very sick and dizzy at the top.

Anyone been and experienced similar or was it just me being a grumpy sod?

How do you know that they are fake? What makes your way of being less fake than theirs? We all put on an act to some extent.

CoughLaughFart · 02/09/2018 14:54

What did you want from these complete strangers you’ll never see again?

QueenDoris · 02/09/2018 14:56

Fake people? Were they cardboard cutouts or more sophisticated robots?

Efferlunt · 02/09/2018 14:57

Ha! It does attract a certain type. My parents go there quite regularly and know a few of the shopkeepers, they usually have several self proclaimed ‘wizards’ as customers in a day. They do tend towards the self absorbed.

I didn’t want anything. I went to visit the place Smile

Haven’t you heard ‘fake’ being used to describe people before? I didn’t mean cutouts or robots!

I've heard it's a really odd place with a strange 'vibe ' that's a bit unsettling by a friend who is very cool, grounded and relaxed. Others who have been say it's a bit ' creepy ' which intrigues me.

EnormousDormouse · 02/09/2018 15:01

Harsh replies here! I live locally and I avoid Glastonbury high street - it often has an unpleasant edge to it as due to its reputation it attracts quite a lot of life's casualties (drink, drugs, mental health issues). For a 'spiritual' place I can find it quite threatening.
The Chalice Well, the Abbey and the Tor on the other hand are absolutely beautiful and I understand them very calming places to be.

EnormousDormouse · 02/09/2018 15:02

'find' not 'understand'

AdoraBell · 02/09/2018 15:03

I frequently need to go there and wouldn’t say the people are fake at all.

Time40 · 02/09/2018 15:16

I love Glastonbury, and I absolutely love all the crazy shops. It has to be the most entertaining high street in the UK.

Half the people there appear to be totally bonkers, but I get the impression that they're bonkers in a nice way.

MissionItsPossible · 02/09/2018 15:33

bringbacksideburns

I wouldn’t describe it creepy though I did feel ‘vibes’ and felt strange feelings at times.

EnormousDormouse

That’s interesting from a local perspective! I didn’t once feel threatened as I come from a rough part of a large city and even commented the people were open and chilled but there seemed to be a whole veneer of fakeness to me, like playing up to a part. I see most don’t agree though so I guess IABU!

I think the sour whiff was something else, not superiority 😉
It's Glastonbury, what did you expect? It is home to the most famous music festival in the world. Many people arrive there for the weekend and never leave.

CustardOmlet · 02/09/2018 15:51

Glastonbury is Disney for the alternative culture. I love it there as its like another world, but i am under no illusion that its real. The Tor was good fun though, lovely views.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 02/09/2018 15:51

Must be something about festivals, I have done a bus journey which stops in Woodstock on a regular basis and it's always full people wearing tie-die, carrying placards and generally being bohemian. (I think they pay them and bus them in)

LeftRightCentre · 02/09/2018 15:52

I found it creepy as AF rather than fake.

Cblockbitch · 02/09/2018 15:54

I had NO IDEA Glastonbury was a real place! 😂

Frusso · 02/09/2018 16:46

It's Glastonbury, what did you expect? It is home to the most famous music festival in the world it's definitely not "home" to it. It never actually has been. There did used to be a traditional folk festival at Glastonbury itself there many many years ago, but the music festival that we know does not originate from it. it just took the name. probably because it sounds way better than the town the village, that the farm is in, is satellite to

Glastonbury high street does however seem to attract some weird and wonderful people. but not because of the festival.

MissionItsPossible · 02/09/2018 16:57

When I mean fake i suppose the best way I can describe it (when I overheard or took part in conversations) is sort of like a weird, bohemian version of Stepford Wives!? With conversations taking place and saying things because it sounded like something they should say. I found it very off! Maybe I just didn’t get into the flow

i’m a terrible old hippy and i HATED glastonbury town. i loved the Tor (cows notwithstanding) and the Chalice Gardens but apart from that, it just wasn’t a very nice place.

MissionItsPossible · 02/09/2018 16:59

This is exactly what I mean!

ThatchersCold · 02/09/2018 17:01

It’s a bit of a magnet to lost souls, who go there to find themselves. So a higher proportion of people who are a bit messed up for whatever reason.

I used to work in the town centre and depending on my mood I would find it charming and eccentric or just want to headbutt people.

Chickenwings85 · 02/09/2018 17:09

Mission, I understand what you meant about people being fake.
Not been to Glastonbury but after reading the descriptions of people, I think I'd love to visit the place. I'm spiritual but I don't 'dress' like your typical spiritual/magic person would.

Mamabearx4 · 02/09/2018 17:17

It is a different kind of place and some of the conversations ive heard have defiantly made me giggle.its full of "healers" and it can easily asbord you if your feeling lost. Some elements of It are dangerous
I have acquaintances there so travel down there occasionaly.

But each to their own, i dont object to their lifestyle but its not my cup of tea. Disclaimer not everyone there is into that culture.

Sparklesocks · 02/09/2018 17:21

I get that it wasn’t your cup of tea, but seems unfair and to tar everyone there with the same brush.
