To think Glastonbury High Street is full of fake people?

Just that, really. I visited over the weekend. I have no doubt some people are genuinely into spirituality and magic but it seemed a lot of people were trying way too hard to be wacky and it seemed to be full of “look at MEEEEE” types of people. Laughing and talking very loudly to draw attention to themselves and with a sour whiff of superiority and arrogance about them.

I’m sorry, I’m sure there are loads of nice people there. I just hardly met any! On the plus side the people who own the shops full of tat left us alone apart from an initial greeting when we entered.

Maybe it was a long journey. Maybe it was camping. But the majority of people irritated me! I’m sure I irritated them too and they are glad to see the back of miserable me Wink

The tor was a nice experience though I felt very sick and dizzy at the top.

Anyone been and experienced similar or was it just me being a grumpy sod?

I think that some of the Glastonbury high street people really do believe, whereas some don't and are cynically cashing in.

Sadly if you scratch the veneer there is some awful stuff going on there it was in my work area for years.

Mamabearx4 · 02/09/2018 17:22

Also forgot to add, those who involve themseleves completely believe that their's is the only true way to live. And yes i have been approached and mentored this unwittingly.

HolyMountain · 02/09/2018 17:25

We had a holiday place close by a long time ago when our ds’s were very young .

We went to Glastonbury for a morning and just found it odd, plenty of tourists but a very dull atmosphere.

Sitranced · 02/09/2018 17:25

Everywhere is full of fake and contrived people.

Haint · 02/09/2018 17:26

Do you mean the people were sort of playing a part? Wearing a fancy dress costume rather than actually being chilled out hippies? There’s a lot of that around here which a is a similarly spiritual place

haverhill · 02/09/2018 17:29

I liked it on the whole but it definitely has a slightly peculiar vibe. Nothing I could define in words. The Tor and well were lovely though.

WonderTweek · 02/09/2018 17:31

I love Glastonbury and the characters of the high street. I’ve only met friendly and kind people and generally the vibe I get is really mellow. Grin I’m sure there are the self absorbed types but you find those everywhere anyway.

I have to admit that I haven’t experienced the darker side of Glastonbury as we only go there for day trips so haven’t witnessed the nightlife or seen much antisocial behaviour. I have seen elderly people sell and smoke weed outside a vegan cake shop and eat cake afterwards. I didn’t have a problem with it. Halo I do speak purely as a tourist mind!

Hippopotas · 02/09/2018 18:19

I love Glastonbury I feel at home there

Somertime · 02/09/2018 18:30

The shops are filled with overpriced hippie crap which people think you need from a 'spiritual' place. There are a lot of damaged and unwell people attracted to the town i think which can give it an edgy undertone.

Lots of mediocre coffee shops (though a few good ones).

It's nothing like any of the surrounding towns and villages.

WhoWants2Know · 02/09/2018 19:02

Do you mean the sort of people who feel like they need to "perform" new age spiritualism in a quirky-zany kind of way, because they are in a place that's "meaningful"?

ThunderInMyHeart · 02/09/2018 19:10

Grew up nearby. Agree with the negative comments on here. Only good thing about the high street is Burns the Bread!

The Tor is fab though (wish they’d sort the lacking of nearby parking, however)

carrielou2007 · 02/09/2018 19:12

I don’t like Glastonbury the feel of the place I just don’t like. Live 20 miles away, used to go to the festivals for years when you could just climb in Blush but the town itself just gives me the creeps. Actually drove past today and just gives me the heebie-jeebies (though the Tor is lovely and makes me feel very peaceful). Luckily had been to Mulberry at Shepton Mallet so was feeling soothed Grin

Elphame · 02/09/2018 19:16

EnormousDormose I agree with you. I'm not far away from Glast and I hate the place. The energies are muddled and confused and it attracts a lot of the desperate and mentally ill who are looking for answers- Happily provided of course at a price by whatever fake guru is flavour of the month,

It swallows up the weak and spits out their bones.

MrsOake · 02/09/2018 19:19

If you think Glastonbury’s weird try Totnes

ApolloandDaphne · 02/09/2018 19:19

My DD went to Glastonbury on a uni field trip. She said it was the weirdest town she has ever been to.

I went to boarding school at the foot of the Tor in the late 70s early 80s. The naughty boys were made to run up and down the Tor as a punishment!

Nutkins24 · 02/09/2018 19:37

We live locally. There’s always a few hippies hanging round but I can’t honestly say I notice them much. I’d say there were far more normal people minding their own business. I guess I’m just used to it. Of course most of the shops are full of complete tat but there’s some great cafes, rainbows end being a particular fave. But really it’s just a small Somerset town, I’m not sure what you were expecting to find there?

ThunderInMyHeart · 02/09/2018 19:43

@Elderflower - Edgarley!

PoisonousSmurf · 02/09/2018 19:43

I visit often as only live near Bristol, but in reality, everyone in Glasto is BONKERS!
It's interesting to people watch there when it's out of season. So many wannabe witches and wizards wandering around.
It'a Harry Potter land sometimes, lol!

Putyourdamnshoeson · 02/09/2018 19:44

I live nearby. I dislike the town itself, love the Tor, Chalice well etc.
It's full of loud, performative hippies. Like performance parenting, their hippyness needs to be overheard and appreciated in order to validate them. A lot of :I'm mad me' types. It's exhausting.

Lilyhatesjaz · 02/09/2018 19:51

I have been there many times. There are often those sort of men there that are loud and cheerful but they are strung so tight that one wrong word would set them off. I find it quite a scary place but I love the tor.

Elderflower14 · 02/09/2018 19:54

@ThunderInMyHeart Yes
I was boarded out at Lower Edgarley in the lane down the side of the school....

Jog22 · 02/09/2018 20:04

Last time I was there, in Star Herbs which is a wonderful place there was a male customer loudly mansplaining herbs to a woman who worked there. I was able to leave and return when he'd gone. Unhappily she wasn't poor cow just stood and nodded a lot.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 02/09/2018 20:23

Jog I think I must've been there on the same day as you! Grin
