Without wanting to give too much detail , I'm about to start a placement within the NHS . It involves working with children . I need an enhanced DBS check .

I've just been told by a friend that any involvement with children's services will show up on a check ? Three years ago my children were placed on a child protection plan because of domestic violence from my husband that they witnessed . I stayed with him and did everything required as did he and the case was closed . We split up about a year later due to something completely unrelated and now have a good parenting relationship .

Will this show up on a check and if so will it stop me from working with children ?

Yes I'm my experience,they have thoroughly checked every aspect and it will flag up.
Hopefully they will have the opportunity to either gather more information or speak to you directly.

Thanks for replying ! Do you know what exactly they'd be able to see ? Would it just say 'child protection plan' or would it give the reason for it or would it have the full reports ect on there ? I'd be less worried if they'd be able to see the full report !

What is most likely is the DBS would come back with a positive report and the trust would contact you to ask you about why has come up and then they would make a judgement based on that. It would be confidential between the recruitment team and your line manager

I am not sure that it would. My children were placed on Child Protection Plans for similar reasons. My recent DBS check ( Enhanced Disclosure) did not mention it.

@gettingbacktoresearch thanks for explaining a bit more to me ! It's so worrying , before now it hasn't even occurred to me that it'd be a problem - there were no concerns about me being around the children and they stayed in my care the whole time .

It is my understanding that the Disclosure lists any criminal convictions and an Enhanced Disclosure also lists any spent convictions. A Child Protection Plan is not a criminal conviction.

It won’t show up on a DBS. That is purely for criminal convictions.

The CP plan won't show up but if there were police reports related to the DA incidents they may flag it will then be the agency policy on how they follow up.

this shows what DBS covers.

Standard DBS checks show details of spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings held on police records.

Enhanced DBS checks show the same information as standard checks, plus any additional information held by local police considered relevant to the role in question.

So if the police don't have info, it can't appear on your DBS.
If the police were called, in connection with an incident which led to SS involvement, it might do.

The police were called due to domestic violence and also a police officer attended the child protection meeting as is standard in my area .

It can show up on an enhanced DBS, it is at the discretion of the police force if they feel it is applicable. You should have been informed of this by SS when they did the checks.

Checks for the child protection inv would include checks with local police they then could have held this data under the information sharing agreement between agencies so the police may have this information.

I’m almost certain it won’t show up, only criminal offences and cautions. I’m sure a google search can tell you more.
Although it might be something you are required to declare, it shouldn’t affect your chances of a job.

I’ve never seen any child protection plan on an enhanced DBS and I’ve seen lots. They are for disclosing criminal activity not social problems. It would show if you had been prosecuted for neglect or cruelty.
I would think it would breach the children’s confidentiality as they can’t consent to it being revealed.

I have seen child protection plans show up on an enhanced DBS. The important thing is that if it's possible anything will show up, you need to be proactive and tell them first. If you don't, it can be a problem.

A google search basically says that the police hold information on the PNC that is classed as 'soft information' that isn't necessarily criminal and this can show up on enhanced checks .

My op wasn't clear in explaining that the placement is running alongside an education course , after being a sahm for years I've finally plucked up the courage to better mine and my children's lives . I will definitely mention it to the relevant people beforehand so that if it does show up it hopefully mightn't be a problem .

I think it may well come up as anything involving children could be deemed relevant to the role.

Try not to let it worry you too much or stop you pursuin your career. As long as you are honest I can’t see it being a problem. Not everybody is squeaky clean that works for the NHS and as long as it isn’t something that prohibits you from working with vulnerable people you should be okay. Good luck
