To dislike ensuite bathrooms?

Currently house-hunting and getting fed up with en-suite bathrooms being carved out of bedroom space and then being sold as some sort of plus point.

Plus, there is nothing cools my ardour like the sound of dp doing his ablutions first thing (and I'm sure he feels the same about me).

Am I alone in preferring my bedroom to be entirely separate from my bathroom? Why have they become such A Thing?

Mamagin, that looks as though they ran out of money before they put the partition wall in!

We bought and renovated a house built in 1998 a few years ago. It had four bedrooms, three ensuites, a family bathroom and additional lavatories on the ground and first floors. Ludicrous but for its location was the norm. Now have five beds, three bathrooms, two of which are ensuite but both have windows. What I can't stand is a family bathroom and a separate bog which is what this house had before we ripped it apart --and a shower in a cuoboard in master bed and a shower in the utility room.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/09/2018 11:07

Not all of us live in cramped housing. Ensuites and walk ins are not at all uncommon.

I'm not sure why you seem to think that if one doesn't have an en-suite or walk in, one must live in 'cramped housing'. I don't believe anyone said they were uncommon either.

I just don't like them and we removed ours when we moved in and made it into a dressing room.

AutoFilled · 02/09/2018 11:08

When we house hunt a couple of years ago, we ruled out any house that doesn’t have an en suite. Same with a dining room that you need to walk past the living room to get to. All the houses from the 80/90s seem to have saner layouts. So ensuite and family bathrooms, dining room directly off the kitchen or in one room.

bastardlyandmutley · 02/09/2018 11:09

Never liked them and don't see them as a plus point to a property at all. Think that the space would be much more useful as a closet.

However, I have always liked the idea of a Jack and Jill bathroom.

PutDownThatLaptop · 02/09/2018 11:10

I have just moved into the first house that I have ever owned with one. In my previous house, four working adults and a school child vied for the single shower every morning. Now, the three kids can use the main bathroom and we use our en-suite. It's a new build and is big, with plenty of room for the en-suite, which has a window and extractor fan. There is also a downstairs loo off the hall which is big enough for wheelchair access.

YANBU they take bedroom space. Pointless to have nearby in the night as the sound of them negates any plus to having them close.

And then theres the issue that your second bathroom is accessed through someones bedroom which basically means it can only really be used by the people in that room. Why not just have two bathrooms and then everyone can use them as needed?
Lived in a flat once and its just had two ensuites for the bedrooms.. one had a bath and one a shower. So pointless and awkward as what do you do if one of you wants a bath or vice versa? Had to traipse through each others bedrooms.

The very worst of all worlds though is the 'jack and jill' bathroom.
Had a house with one of these where it was the only bathroom and it was an utter nightmare. Especially if we had guests staying over. You had to walk through either our room or my sons room in order to get to the toilet which wasnt great during the night.

I'd like to give special thanks to all those posters who've specified the exact layout of their (many) VAST bedroom suites, including details of super-kingsize beds, wardrobe configurations, window architecture and stunning countryside views. Sounds absolutely wonderful and completely misses the point, but 'twas ever this on MN, I suppose Grin

"Three loos aren't enough?!"

Sorry. I missed the and a shower room Grin

Bluelady · 02/09/2018 11:44

No problem, Lornica. 😀

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 02/09/2018 11:47

When we moved last year not having an ensuite was fairly high on my list when looking. I'm a lazy mare and don't want another bastard bathroom to clean. I'm happy with a built in wardrobe and big bed and all the other shit I cram in my room

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 02/09/2018 11:50

I agree.

And my bathroom is about as far away from my bed as my mum’s en suite as her house is so large!

Actually I don’t mind it when the en suite is built as a separate room, maybe through a dressing area. It’s when it’s a not huge bedroom with, as you say, a carved out space for a shower room, that I don’t like it.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/09/2018 11:53

Why does it miss the point?

TidyLike · 02/09/2018 11:59

YANBU! Matchbox size 3-bed new builds with en suite, separate bathroom, needless downstairs toilet and no storage space. Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 02/09/2018 11:59

Because OP specifically says when en suites are carved out of existing bedroom space, NOT when they’re massive rooms in their own right.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/09/2018 12:29

Ah I see, but the title suggested that she disliked ALL ensuite bathrooms.
Ok, its just ensuites taken out of a small bedroom.
In that case, I concur. Brew

Some new build houses near me have the obligatory en suites. They are small and windowless, and make the bedrooms smaller obviously. In fact, the master bedroom was so small that if you had put in anything other than a 4 foot 6 bed, you would have been unable to open the bathroom door. Madness.
However, I do like a properly designed and roomy bedroom and en suite.
I have occasionally seen a bath (just a bath, usually a rather swanky one), plumbed in and free standing in the bedroom. I think that is just mad. Who wants their bedding and clothes all steamy?

Helmetbymidnight · 02/09/2018 13:13

My bedroom and ensuite is so large that I keep a pop up orchestra in there to play Beethoven’s fifth whenever I do a poo.

Bluelady · 02/09/2018 13:25

🤣

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 02/09/2018 13:31

I love mine. It is a separate full sized room though, not carved out of the bedroom. I'd hate to be without it.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 13:54

Ours is in the front gable of the house and is not carved out of our bedroom. It actually contains the fitted wardrobes and dressing area as well.

That makes it sound grander than it is, but I can only fit a radio in it rather than a pop up orchestra Grin

MarmiteTermite · 10/01/2019 23:24

We are just finishing a project to create an en suite in our largish Victorian semi by carving up our bedroom! We had a very small family bathroom and a large master bedroom. When finished we will have a bigger family bathroom with both bath and large walk in shower plus a good-sized ensuite with another large walk in shower and - hopefully - a still good sized bedroom of 4m x 4m. Can’t wait! The new en-suite has a large window and will have an extractor fan, so hopefully damp and smells won’t be an issue...

Amanduh · 10/01/2019 23:28

I love mine,we have a large bedroom with more than enough space so it isn’t taking anything away. It’s far enough away from the other rooms so doesn’t disturb ds, good if you want privacy, great when guests are staying, convenient in the night. It has a window and a door, its not really any different from having a bedroom next door to a main bathroom, can’t see how it’s ‘vile’ or anything like having a toilet in the room you sleep in Confused
