To dislike ensuite bathrooms?

Currently house-hunting and getting fed up with en-suite bathrooms being carved out of bedroom space and then being sold as some sort of plus point.

Plus, there is nothing cools my ardour like the sound of dp doing his ablutions first thing (and I'm sure he feels the same about me).

Am I alone in preferring my bedroom to be entirely separate from my bathroom? Why have they become such A Thing?

My en-suite has exactly the same size and facilities the "main" bathroom, which it is next door to. In fact by swapping the position of the towel rail and the entry door, which share a corner, it would be transformed from an en-suite to an exact replica of the main bathroom, with a matching entrance from the corridor.

By definition, the only way an en-suite is necessarily difference from a main bathroom is that you do not have to walk through non-private space to get to it. Any difference you think there is between an en-suite and another bathroom other than the placement of the door is not an intrinsic difference. (It may however be a statistically likely inferiority in the UK due to a lot of British housing being cramped and/or badly designed and/or badly built and/or constructed in the era of outside toilets!)

I don't like them either, but I can see how they benefit a large family, all having to be out around the same time in a morning.
We don't have them as don't want a toilet in my bedroom, yuk.
All the extra cleaning too, I couldn't be arsed. We have 2 separate toilets from a bathroom, one upstairs and one downstairs, this does us.
I don't see the point in dish washers either, far quicker to wash up, but each to their own.

I dislike them almost as much as I dislike fitted kitchens.

Sadly I do have an ensuite, and I do need it as the real bathroo/loo is one floor down (ms means I can't move up and down stairs easily, and also has made my bladder less controllable). I think it's vile though.

I'm hoping to move into a bungalow in a few years so there'll be no need for an ensuit then.

Jux

Us too Grin Can't wait for a bungalow. We are looking to move in the next couple of years, just started research, lots of tiny bedrooms all with ensuite.
When fashion changes it will be hard for a lot of people to sell their houses.
We won't even look at a house with them.

@RomanyRoots Quicker to wash up than a dishwasher?! How do you work that out?!

RiddleyW · 11/01/2019 17:14

I used to not like them but the house I am in now has one and I love it.

I suppose I wouldn't like it if it was small, smelly, musty or windowless!
