To dislike ensuite bathrooms?

Currently house-hunting and getting fed up with en-suite bathrooms being carved out of bedroom space and then being sold as some sort of plus point.

Plus, there is nothing cools my ardour like the sound of dp doing his ablutions first thing (and I'm sure he feels the same about me).

Am I alone in preferring my bedroom to be entirely separate from my bathroom? Why have they become such A Thing?

Odd to be shitting so close to where you sleep.

Not when you're used to holidaying in a motorhome! Whenever we get back from holiday, it seems such a faff to cross the landing for a wee in the night.

I like them, but only when they're on an outside wall, with a window, and a decent size. Some of them are scarcely bigger than the shower room in the motorhome. And if we buy a house with an en suite, it will be MINE, and I will never have to clean DP's shaving bristles and toothpaste splat from a sink again.

If we were moving house now I would still want 2 upstairs bathrooms. The second one doesn't need to be en suite though.

makingmammaries · 02/09/2018 10:18

I store dog food in ours - that’s how much we needed an en suite.

grasspigeons · 02/09/2018 10:19

I love all these conditional toilets.Grin

Helmetbymidnight · 02/09/2018 10:26

I wouldn’t want to be without one! Love it.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/09/2018 10:31

Blimey some of these sound awful!

Surely no one objects to an ensuite in a spacey converted loft though?

hendricksy · 02/09/2018 10:33

We all have our own bathrooms but we don't poo in the ensuite when someone is in bed . We use the main bathroom , that's just good manners isn't it ?? Our master is massive and doesn't lose anything from having a big bathroom too 🤷‍♀️

LakieLady · 02/09/2018 10:34

I' m one of the few people that think an outside loo is the best thing ever.

I like them, especially in a house with no downstairs lav. My mate has one, and I will often use it rather than go up the stairs to the first floor bathroom. Her stairs are so steep you practically need rope and crampons to get up them safely, they're really narrow and they have an awkward turn about 3/4 of the way down. By the time I'm on my second glass, the outdoor lav is safer, albeit traumatic for arachnophobes.

After seeing posh houses on Rightmove, it's now known as the "gardener's WC".

I am generally not a fan, would rather have one or two luxury bathrooms than 4 tiny open suites.

Planning to do work to the house just bought, has a family bathroom with big bath but tiny shower, master bedroom has another free standing bath, tiny shower, loo but all a squeeze, also has a reasonable sized dressing room. The options are to get rid on one bath to create a good size shower room. Or reluctantly loose the dressing room to have a luxury bathroom in the dressing room with separate shower and loo.(remove free standing bath in master bathroom)

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 02/09/2018 10:37

Totally agree! I'd much rather have room for storage!

Oldraver · 02/09/2018 10:37

I love mine though I have a decent sized bedroom as well. OH has his own en-suite downstairs so bonus all round

ByTheSea · 02/09/2018 10:37

YABU - deal breaker for me not to have one.

HushabyeMountainGoat · 02/09/2018 10:38

Provided there is a bathroom on the same level as the bedrooms then i don't think an en suite is necessary. They seem to be standard in new builds now which already can be made to quite small specifications.

Bluelady · 02/09/2018 10:38

I've never understood the obsession with them. We have a bathroom and shower room as well as a downstairs loo. Surely that's enough for anyone? I'd much rather have a dressing room than an en suite.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 10:40

"Surely that's enough for anyone?"

Ha ha ha ha
You clearly don't have teenage daughters or anyone in the house with IBS.

Bluelady · 02/09/2018 10:45

Three loos aren't enough?!

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 10:47

Well we have the same number of toilets/bathrooms as you Bluelady but one happens to be an en suite. So yeah, 3 is enough for us. Just a different configuration to yours.
We also have a dressing room!

Bluelady · 02/09/2018 10:48

Bit aggressive, Dora - wrong side of the bed?

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 10:50

Just didn’t really understand your point. You said you don’t get the obsession as surely 3 toilets is enough for anyone. I was just saying that yes, 3 toilets is enough for us... one of them is an en suite 🤷🏻‍♀️

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 10:51

I imagine in the main, those saying they would love an en suite aren’t people who already have 3 toilets and desperately want a 4th.

Bluelady · 02/09/2018 10:53

I imagine you' could have a quarrel in an empty ensuite.

Skyejuly · 02/09/2018 10:54

We have a toilet downstairs plus an ensuite and a upstairs family bathroom. 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 3 under 6. Its not enough.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/09/2018 10:55

OP, I couldn't agree with you more. I started a thread on this a few months ago and there were mixed replies. Some people were incensed that anyone would NOT want one.

Absolutely not for me, I think they're vile.

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 10:57

Confused I was just trying to figure out what your point was. I’m not really that bothered!

Babdoc · 02/09/2018 10:58

I suppose if you’re keen for your bedroom to smell of shit and Harpic, an en suite is a possible way to achieve your dream.... but I can’t see the appeal, personally!
I prefer to have two sets of doors between the bedroom and the nearest bathroom, just as is compulsory between bathrooms and food prep areas such as kitchens.
