To dislike ensuite bathrooms?

Currently house-hunting and getting fed up with en-suite bathrooms being carved out of bedroom space and then being sold as some sort of plus point.

Plus, there is nothing cools my ardour like the sound of dp doing his ablutions first thing (and I'm sure he feels the same about me).

Am I alone in preferring my bedroom to be entirely separate from my bathroom? Why have they become such A Thing?

YANBU. Don’t fancy one at all.

TwoOddSocks · 01/09/2018 22:36

YANBU but I think we're in the minority. I'd rather have an extra bathroom for guests to use. Our en suite has the best shower so people tend to go trooping through our room to use it which is bloody annoying.

YANBU

Am I alone in preferring my bedroom to be entirely separate from my bathroom?

^I agree

Zintox · 01/09/2018 22:38

Yanbu. I hate them. It's such a weird concept.

curlylocks101 · 01/09/2018 22:39

Hate them. They often seem to make the bedroom damp too. Yuck.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/09/2018 22:41

If a house is too small to take bedroom space for a bathroom then yes, YANBU.
However, an en suite is an absolute boon.
Having a midnight pee, starkers
Going from bed to shower in a few steps

cadburyegg · 01/09/2018 22:41

YANBU but I would love one, personally. The prospect of having a bathroom that I don’t have to share with 2 teenage boys eventually is very appealing!

They seem to be most popular in newer builds but I would prefer a bigger third bedroom / more storage / more space generally.

sirmione16 · 01/09/2018 22:42

We didn't look for a house with one in, just turned out the one we bought has a lovely one - spacious, newly renovated, double shower. We NEVER use it. Ever. I see using the toilet in it as peeing in the corner of our bedroom, and the shower over our bath is less enclosed which I prefer. OH is just a creature of habit so sticks to one - the bathroom. Honestly I don't see the point in the en suite at all right now.

tissuesosoft · 01/09/2018 22:42

YANBU- I would rather the space be a small walk-in wardrobe

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/09/2018 22:42

I don't like them either. Who needs another toilet to clean?

Longdistance · 01/09/2018 22:44

We have an ensuite, but it isn’t carved out of the bedroom, it’s supposed to be there as an extra, but yes, I know what you mean.

pannikin · 01/09/2018 22:46

We are currently house hunting and have seen so many new builds that have an en suite rammed into the master bedroom where there isn’t really space for one!

GladysKnight · 01/09/2018 22:47

Oh I'm with you OP. DH needs to put the light on to 'go' in the night, and when we are staying anywhere with an ensuite I am woken by a sudden bright light (the swithc being outside of course, so the door has to be opened) and like s not, the roar of a fan. And if you turn the fan off, you'll get extra dampness in the bedroom from the shower, drying towels etc. which is very unhealthy IMO. Plus of course the noises and smells that go with bathroom use that even in a loving relationship aren't necessarily the things you most want to share. I think the feng shui's all wrong!! Grin

I'm all for more than one bathroom - we've got two and even with just four of us that's invaluable, could do with another loo as well tbh. But I'm happy to wrap a towel round myself after my shower (only bother when ds is home in fact, sorry dd) in return for it not being in my bedroom.

FadedRed · 01/09/2018 22:48

I love my ensuite bathroom.
But I suppose it depends on the setup dof the ensuite. Mine doesn't make the bedroom damp, but it is well ventilated, and has a window, and it is a decent size, and so is the bedroom.
And it's MINE, ALL MINE. No one else uses it, just me. That's the rule.

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/09/2018 22:48

It's nice to have one's own bathroom that smells nice but I totally agree that to have it separate and thus private is best. YANBU . We have a bathroom next to our bedroom that can be used by anyone if the other is occupied , it seems more practical for us all than having great teenagers tramping through semi naked for a pee or a shower.

Singlenotsingle · 01/09/2018 22:50

Love an ensuite, and wouldn't want to buy a house without one. We've got a downstairs family bathroom and one bedroom upstairs with ensuite. It is a big bedroom though.

DucksOnThePond · 01/09/2018 22:50

We use seperate bathrooms and if there is an ensuite perfect! You can use that and he can bog off elsewhere in the morning and you can both have your own space ...

AntiHop · 01/09/2018 22:50

I would LOVE an ensuite. So convenient for night time wees.

MarcieBluebell · 01/09/2018 22:50

Ynbu

0hCrepe · 01/09/2018 22:51

I was never bothered but we’re now in the loft conversion which has one which I’m glad as it’s nice not to have to run downstairs from an attic to the bathroom as I always did growing up. Don’t understand houses that boast loads of ensuites though, just seems like a lot of cleaning to me. The door stays closed!

MrsChollySawcutt · 01/09/2018 22:52

YABU at least one ensuite is a necessity when you have teenagers!

MrsApplepants · 01/09/2018 22:52

YANBU I’d rather have a walk in wardrobe any day, far more useful

RoseMartha · 01/09/2018 22:52

I only like them if staying in a b and b

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 01/09/2018 22:52

It so annoys me when there's an ensuite but no space for one! So then you have a small bedroom with half of it being bathroom! It's just me and DP so really I don't need an extra bathroom off my bedroom, and I really really do not need to risk any aromas wafting out to my bed 🤢

dementedpixie · 01/09/2018 22:52

You're not allowed to poop in the ensuite! I like ours and it doesn't take away from the bedroom size
