To ask what benefits I'm entitled to?

GlitterGoddess · 30/08/2018 19:49

Hi all, pregnant with first child, will soon be on mat leave, partner is a full time worker and we own our own home. I would like to stay on mat leave as long as possible (as quite frankly I don't earn enough to merit going back to work and paying for childcare)

So, what benefits am I entitled to help us? I'm not glued up with it all as ive never claimed any kind of benefit before!
Thanks Smile

You need to say how much you earn...

LeroyJenkins · 30/08/2018 19:50

All depends on your partners income
I would have a look at the entitled to website

LeroyJenkins · 30/08/2018 19:51

Sorry and your income (I was thinking if you wanted to be a sahm)

GlitterGoddess · 30/08/2018 19:51

Oh sorry, partner can earn up 50k (mainly overtime, his basic is 30k)

Not much unless you're both on low incomes

LeroyJenkins · 30/08/2018 19:52

I don't imagine you will get much if anything at that salary

ListenLinda · 30/08/2018 19:52

You’ll be entitled to child benefit onc the baby is born :)

Pickleypickles · 30/08/2018 19:52

Google benefit calculator, turn2us.org is a good one, that will tell you better than mumsnet.

But on a salary of 30k I would imagine FA

FASH84 · 30/08/2018 19:53

On 50k I wouldn't think you'd be entitled to anything other than non means tested child benefit which isn't much at all

HariboBrenshnio · 30/08/2018 19:53

You would have to say how much you earn not on maternity in the application. They don't take maternity pay into account when doing working tax/child tax or income support. So you might find it's not that much if you both earn a reasonable amount.

0range99 · 30/08/2018 19:54

If he earns less than £50k you will be able to claim Child Benefit which is £20.70 per week

GlitterGoddess · 30/08/2018 19:54

Ah okay guys thank you!! Smile

Would probably have been a good idea to check out budgets before getting pregnant. Unless the pregnancy was a surprise.

HidingFromMyKids · 30/08/2018 19:58

Do you feel like you need benefits on a household income like that plus maternity pay Confused

Benefits are meant to be a safety net for people who are struggling. Our household income nowhere near 30 and we aren't struggling.

Do you need help budgeting maybe

GlitterGoddess · 30/08/2018 19:58

@MrsTerryPratchett thank you but we will be ok was just wondering what help there is available. We've both paid enough tax the past 15 years to claim some back if it helps us live a bit more comfortably for a while

Seeing as my partner will be taking on all of our bills on his own I was only wondering what I was entitled to. I am great at money management thank you.

50k and you want benefits?! 😂😂 utterly ridiculous

HidingFromMyKids · 30/08/2018 20:00

What kind of bills can't be managed on 30-50k Confused

BE18mum · 30/08/2018 20:00

How much is “not enough to merit going back to work”?

I will have to go back on around 17k (hubby on 20k) and we plan to use childcare as we have no other choice.

GlitterGoddess · 30/08/2018 20:01

50k not guaranteed income, 20k of that is overtime so we don't know if he will get it or not

GlitterGoddess · 30/08/2018 20:02

Really guys? There's no need to attack me. We have paid our taxes for years and never claimed anything from the government, I'm not DEMANDING help, just WONDERING if I am entitled to any help. Jesus Christ

Um is this real?

sulflower · 30/08/2018 20:03

😂 really?

peachgreen · 30/08/2018 20:05

Yeahhhh, that's not how tax works. You can't "claim it back" because you fancy giving up work. Hmm

Anyway, to answer your question, you're not entitled to anything other than child benefit. My husband's income is significantly less than that and I'm on mat leave. Not entitled to anything other than child benefit.

LIZS · 30/08/2018 20:05

Child Benefit - in full as long as he keeps within 50k, but only about £20 pw.
