To think Tesco.com shoppers are useless

When I ordered my shopping this week I specifically asked for a chicken not costing more than £3.20 (just a small one) and wrote a note asking for it to be 'well in-date'. And I ordered some lovelly Orville Reuchanbauer (sp) Movie Theatre Butter Popcorn but marked it as 'do not substitue!

What do I get, a huge chicken to feed about a hundred people with leftovers for the cats- but that goes out of date in 48 hours and I also get sweet salt popcorn......

Is it me. I do shopping on-line for convenience and because it's one less car on the road, obviously I am going to have to rethink this.

I should add the above are only two of a long list of substituions and general all round cock-ups!

Ooh, I normally find asda sends the brownest most wilted lettuce in the shop, bruised apples and bananas, and they tend to substitute veggie pasta sauce with sauces containing meat.

Never shopped with tesco online, they sound a bit rubbish though!

TBH ours are always brilliant never had a problem and my bananas are always green as requested

LowFatMilkshake · 06/06/2007 15:07

I once ordered some pull-up nappies for DD a pack of 28 costing £3.28 and was substitued a a pack of 8 swimming nappies costing £4.98!!

Sometimes I wonder if the pople who do the shopping can even read!

And do they go through a test to make sure that common sense is not one of thier character traits!

Ours have mostly been great, I'm afraid. But if you ever have a grievance, ring their customer services and they always give you a refund on those products.

bookwormmum · 06/06/2007 15:10

My brother once ordered a 400gm bar of chocolate (he was having a piggy moment) but one 200gm bar was 'substituted' for it as they'd run out of the 400gm bars. I can't work out why they didn't put 2 bars of the 200gm in instead..... maybe they were a health freak!

Thankfully since then there's been very few mistakes made - perhaps it was teething problems. If you've getting loads of stuff wrong, then reject it and complain to the store manager.

kickassangel · 06/06/2007 15:12

dh can shop better than tesco.com

LowFatMilkshake · 06/06/2007 15:14

I have noticed if you order soething as part of a deal they dont substitue it to still allow you to qualify for the Buy one get one free, or two for three or whatever.

At Christmas I ordere a box of Twighlight mint chocs that were on offer for .74p. I was substitued for a box of Finest costing £4.98! And because the idiot shopper had'nt bagged them in an inside out bag I could'nt find them to give back to the driver.

Customer services I have also found to be on and off. I had a store manager phone me once when a delivery was going to be late and he said if it happened again I could have the delivery charge rfunded. Sure enough the next week (and funnily enough the 3rd week in a rowe it) was late again and I rang customer services to say they could'nt give a refund based on what a 'store manager' had said

bananabump · 06/06/2007 15:17

I find that the driver turns up, dumps the bags on me, makes me sign the clipboard and sods off within 30 seconds, so even if I knew which bags were substitutions etc I couldn't complain or return them if I needed to because he's already gone!

catsmother · 06/06/2007 15:19

The only things I've ever ordered (after the 1st couple of attempts) online are catfood, water, loo rolls, bin bags and the like. I.e: bulky and/or heavy stuff that can't be easily mucked up.

The use by date was my biggest gripe .... who wants 4 pints of milk (x 3, so 12 pints actually, full, semi & skimmed) which goes out of date in 2 days time, or brown bananas (when you've specified green) ?

I'm quite sure the .com shoppers can read, but I'm equally convinced that some stores take it as an opportunity to get rid of stuff close to sell by, and/or grotty looking fruit & veg, and gamble on the fact that not everyone will complain about it.

kateyp · 06/06/2007 16:01

Hey - take a look at my shallot thread!! That was ocado - we gave up on tesco's ages ago as they never brought the right stuff and it always all went off really soon.

I too think that it is often a good way to get rid of the near sell by date stuff.

And I did get a refund on my mouldy shallots from ocado. Also noticed that if you don't order from Ocado for a few weeks they start to send you some good offers to entice you back!

LowFatMilkshake · 06/06/2007 16:03

I get lots of flyers from ocado - am sorely tempted!

Now I am back at work and earning decent money again I am also going back to my veg box scheme for fresh fruit and veg!

I've just started using Tesco to deliver shopping - last week i put notes on my meat asking for long use by dates and got meat with 2 days on it. this week I didn't bother and got stuff with a week's date left on it! I find Tesco's arrive on time but if they substitute stuff of a higher price you pay the higher price. With Asda - OK they might turn up 2 hours late!! but if they substitute your choices with things that are more expensive you only pay the price of your original item.

Lolly68 · 06/06/2007 16:48

Tesco and Sainsbury are crap. Ocado is brilliant! You pay slightly more but even the packing is superb!!

rubyshoes · 06/06/2007 16:53

I got the same bad experience from tesco and sainsburys have also just tried ocado, I was very happy with them and there is also more choice

DaisyMOO · 06/06/2007 17:21

I've tried complaining about the short shelf-lifes but apparently the shoppers aren't allowed to look for the ones with a long use by date and have to just take the first one Last week we had 2 packs of beef mince and a pack of pork mince all go out of date before their use by date, grr. I find this happens on a regular basis and it's not my fridge because it has a thermometer and is really cold!

kittyhas6 · 06/06/2007 18:22

tescos are sh*t, sainsburys much better as are ocado.
Tescos always send rubbish sell by date food and once when I ordred 1lb mushrooms I was sent 1 solitary, lonely looking mushroom all wrapped up in huge swaths of plastic. Their delivery costs are the most expensive too.

My only problem with tesco shoppers are the number of plastic bags they use. There must be a better way of doing it. Sometimes you will get one tiny item in one shopping bag.

I was sent 2 litres of milk that had that day on it as the use by date. What annoys me about it is that I then had to go to the damn shop myself to buy some more - it's all very well them giving a refund but if you actually need the milk...

Am also tempted by Ocado and DH really wants to try it as he thinks our neighbours will think we're posh if they see it being delivered!

kel4mum · 06/06/2007 18:38

I shop online with Tesco. I order some kids toothpaste, just the one tube, but was sent five tubes of it. (which i didnt get charged for) They must think my kids teeth are really bad

gscrym · 06/06/2007 18:45

I've never had any real probs with Tesco.com. Asda have been a fecking nightmare. OUr Tesco driver is always polite, shows you the substitutions and chats to DS while I put the groceries in the hallway. I got £56 worth of stuff but was only charged £36. With Asda, I have to go through the order as inevitably it's wrong. I asked for low alcohol wine and got normal which I can't drink.

Scanner · 06/06/2007 18:48

No No NO, I'm expecting my first ever Tescos online delivery in 15 mins! I haven't online shopped for a couple of years, I used to use Ocado and had problems every time. Not just substitutions, but forgetting half my shopping, which you don't realise until you've put it away and find yourself wondering if you forgot to order stuff or not.

Dh is anti online shopping because of the close to sell by date thing, but it's 25 mins to the nearest supermarket here and I wanted to save time. Fingers crossed for me, please.

LoveAngel · 06/06/2007 18:49

They can be a bit crap. They've subsitted stuff with completely crap products I wouldn't normally buy before, but that's always been when I've been stupid enough not to specify an alternative. The only time they seriously cocked up for me was at Christmas when they got quite a few things wrong - but they were super apologetic, re-delivered the stuff later the same day, and gave me money off my next shop.

Annoying all the same when they mess up your order, though.
