To not understand how this different from putting an anorexic model on the cover

Cosmopolitan have a morbidly obese model on their cover this month. I am absolutely behind the idea of body positivity - after children my body is far from perfect and it’s nice to see companies like ASOS use larger women and not airbrush stretch marks etc.

But this model is dangerously obese and risking her health. How is that any different from having a dangerously thin model on the cover?

Your post makes me sad and angry at the same time @toomuchconfusion

I don't hate you or find you unacceptable in any way shape or form, and I absolutely wouldn't look at you and judge you as being greedy, lazy or stupid.

Some overweight people possibly are that way through greed and laziness but I'm willing to bet my last penny these are in the extreme minority and that the vast majority have underlying reasons/causes.

It angers me that as a society we've failed to help you and support you in the same way that we would someone who is severely underweight.

Someone anorexic would have had therapy, diet and nutrition advice and guidance from proper professionals.

But people just tell you to "go on a diet" or "join slimming world". You're right, it's not that bloody simple and it goddamn well stinks.

Everyone matters IMO no matter their size, everyone with health concerns related to weight and their diet/lifestyle should be supported to the same degree.

Corkscrewbetty · 30/08/2018 23:20

Magnussen - why aren't you making an effort to be less of a cock? Try to disguise it a bit better.

Magnussen · 30/08/2018 23:25

Why should I?

Sarahandduck18 · 30/08/2018 23:26

Anorexia kills children.

No child has ever died of obesity.

Corkscrewbetty · 30/08/2018 23:31

God, Magnussen! Because you sound so sick!

OftenHangry · 30/08/2018 23:42

@Sarahandduck18 not immediately....
That's why most of voices here were for promoting healthy size. Not too boney, not too big. Size which will most likely not take 20-30 years of your life span.
We cannot say "But saying obesity is bad is body shaming and it's forcing children to become anorexic".
What we must say is neither is good for them. And we must build the "Be happy in your body" to some extent, at the same time we have a responsibility towards children to make sure they understand that extremes either way are not ok because they will kill them and create a support to get them where they need to be.
Size 30+ and size 0 are both dangerous.

butterflysugarbaby · 31/08/2018 00:06

YANBU. I don't agree with body shaming, but celebrating obesity is ridiculous.

Magnussen · 31/08/2018 00:06

sarah where did you get that from.... us there a link?

Magnussen · 31/08/2018 00:07

butterfly I agree

She's disabling herself

butterflysugarbaby · 31/08/2018 00:07

@Sarahandduck18

No child has ever died of obesity.

No 'child' has ever died of anorexia either!

Hmm

FINE, anorexia is dangerous, but don't make out being grossly overweight is not!

butterflysugarbaby · 31/08/2018 00:09

And I'm sorry, but that woman on the front of COSMO, looks bloody AWFUL in my opinion. Massively overweight and covered it tats. Seriously what is actually attractive about her?

Serious question!

butterflysugarbaby · 31/08/2018 00:11

covered IN tats, not covered IT tats!

NapQueen · 31/08/2018 00:11

Ill bet she has 100 times more body confidence than the thin woman who was on every other cover.

Magnussen · 31/08/2018 00:12

Which thin woman was that?

HartleyHaresHo · 31/08/2018 00:22

Ill bet she has 100 times more body confidence than the thin woman who was on every other cover.

I disagree - and it's actually insulting that you'd claim that.

I think she has a pretty face, but in no way can her body/size be attributed to be beautiful. I really feel for her as she has obvious mental health issues no matter the 'I'm happy and obsese and beautiful' claims.

I don't agree that her on the front page could contribute to people gaining weight - ridiculous. Let's be honest, we all find her body repulsive albeit she has a pretty face - jesus, just say it for what it is

Holowiwi · 31/08/2018 00:31

Wow that's horrible
Well that's the world we live in now
Self delusion, weak willed people who wish to blame everyone but themselves for their problems.

HelenaDove · 31/08/2018 00:33

"Sorry but a current size 14 / 16 in somebody under 5'7 is overweight (as measured by body fat percentage)."

im 5 foot 5 and lost ten stone to get down to that size. I dont drink (im 45 and ive never ever been drunk. How many people can say that with the UK drinking culture the way it is.

I was a UK size 28 and 21 stone.

I lost it in 2002/2003 Ive put on a few pounds because of the bloody heatwave My flat is on the second storey and during the 8 week heatwave it barely dropped below 32 degrees so i did have a lot of ice cream over the summer. I couldnt have the windows open very often unless i wanted my entire flat and possessions to stink of the downstairs neighbours really strong skunk.

This flat is unbearable in the summer. Now the really hot weather is gone im back to eating healthily again. Homes are too well insulated If i could afford to buy a house i would buy an old one that still has a larder. And thats another problem with the insulation i didnt fucking ask for. The storage of fresh food that is supposed to be stored at room temp Ha! PMSL. #ukhousing

HelenaDove · 31/08/2018 00:38

The persecution doesnt stop after people have lost the weight either.

Magnussen · 31/08/2018 00:43

Crowdfunding is bloody cheeky

WellThisIsShit · 31/08/2018 00:50

I hate the way these types of arguments go.

Oh throw in some justification and disguise but it always seems to come down to the basic idea: fat women must be punished, thin women must be helped.

I’ve been both.

Being fat is far, FAR worse. It’s societally unacceptable, and although I was called some cruel names as a skinny unhealthy women, and I thought it was terrible st the time, nothing compares to the hatred that fat inspires. The open vitriol and loathing. The virtuous shaming. And the invisibility, Harry Potter really missed a trick, all he needed was a layer of blubber and it has the same effect as any invisiblity cloak.

I don’t know why anyone could be genuinely concerned that us undesirables might get the wrong message and think we are in the slightest bit socially acceptable. We know we are not. The messages are overwhelming loud and continuous in all aspects of daily life. We are ugly. We are disgusting. We do not deserve to be part of your society. And we must definitely never ever access any kind of healthcare via the nhs, even if it’s nothing related to obesity... because when it comes to us, everything we do or say is always to be with our vast fat grossness, because that’s all we can ever be. Fat, fat and fat. Full stop.

It’s ok, please don’t worry, we know our place. One novelty front cover won’t change society’s message.

Ironic really, as hatred, bullying and exclusion doesn’t actually make fat people thin... but since when does that matter right? Most aren’t looking for genuine solutions, just to blame, to punish and to distance.

HelenaDove · 31/08/2018 01:02

Going by this thread Loose Women have some competition!

HelenaDove · 31/08/2018 01:05

I take a size 16 trouser due to the loose skin ive left on my belly due to weight loss.

But dont worry Ive learnt to live with it. So the haters can relax.

HelenaDove · 31/08/2018 01:07

toomuchconfusion Thanks

WellThisIsShit. Thanks

delphguelph · 31/08/2018 02:04

Well, it certainly got you lot talking!

TheLastNigel · 31/08/2018 05:45

There doesn't seem to be many 'normal' (by which I mean sized 12-16 which are Uk average sizes) models though. They are either very skinny or 'curve' models who are 16 plus.
Those that fall in between that are deemed either too fat to be a skinny model or not fat enough to be a plus size model. What we could do with is a wide range of ALL the sizes modelling the clothes, maybe with the majority being the size that the majority of women in the uk are-just to reflect the demographic.
I'm a size 12-I find it very hard to visualise what will look good one me as my size is not really represented in the mainstream media at all.
