to be counting down the days until our hamster dies?

Just that really. 30 weeks pregnant and irritable. I hate our hamster. Is smells after a day. It makes a massive racket on its wheel. It has a horrid ugly cage. I feel guilty knowing it can't run around like a wild hamster should/would. It's just annoying and pointless. Hardly ever gets played with by DD. Am I a vile human being to have had a fleeting thought re how nice it is going to be when hamster is no more and refusing to get another?

Hahaha yanbu luv

VanillaBeans · 30/08/2018 01:59

OP what size is your wheel? A good tip for Syrians if you are keeping it is to look for things in the rat section of a pet store or even Guinea pig for toys - studies have been done on Syrians to show they prefer wheels that you’d think would be too big - those big rat wheels would be perfect. Providing a better environment would help with the noise.

If you are able (you do need to do this if you are going to keep the poor thing) please find a way to offer more space. You don’t have to spend much; a bending plastic tube (~£3) going down into an Ikea Samla box in the biggest size (£10) and filled up halfway with woodshavings would provide a cheap way to offer more space.

BlueberryPud · 30/08/2018 02:01

OP you are not vile. Also, it is also David Attenborough's 'opinion' that animals are happiest in their natural habitat, even if that means being precipitately seen off by a bird of prey. Better that, perhaps, than years of imprisonment.

BlueberryPud · 30/08/2018 02:03

A short life of freedom and joy, or a long tedious life of hamster wheels. You choose.

If OP was able to drop him to Lyme for you to bring him back to London, I can meet you anywhere that suits you. I'm in North London.

Poor hammy sounds unloved and ignored. Even if you don't like her you and your husband should be giving her the best life you can. She relies on you and you've failed her.

You can laugh and roll your eyes and take the piss all you want and say I'm being dramatic, I don't for one second think you'll actually care. You're posts don't come across well at all.

SteviaStephanie · 30/08/2018 03:03

I can’t believe some people would suggest releasing an animal that’s always been in captivity into the wild. In addition to the fact that you’re basically just sentencing them to death, it’s illegal to release non-native species into the UK anyway (so for example with grey squirrels, should you catch one in your house/garden, it’s then illegal to release it anywhere else).

OP, if your husband got the hamster, tell him that it’s his problem!

Bettysnoop · 30/08/2018 03:31

Try spraying cage with white vinegar, urine smells absorb into the plastic & normal cleaner won't budge the smells. I use white vinegar for cats litter tray & it rids it of all odours.

Also you are being unreasonable, poor little thing, not a nice trait to hate defenceless little animals!

stargazer2030 · 30/08/2018 04:40

Our hamster used to drive me mad. It was well cared for and the kids loved it BUT the cage always smelt ( a day after cleaning), he used to take food into the silent wheel turning it into a huge rattle that echoed round the house, he escaped several times and was a nightmare to find - once went missing for several days. I was never tempted to get another....

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 07:37

Oh man this thread, hilarious! Some precious folks out there.

OP posts:
GoldenMcOldie · 30/08/2018 07:41

Yeah hilarious. For you perhaps.

Poor fucking caged animal (who you hate) probably has other ideas.

BlueberryPud · 30/08/2018 07:45

Oh for goodness sake. Nobody has said e pet hamster should be released into the wild. I am merely suggesting they shouldn't be taken out of it in the first place. Like anything that needs to be kept in a cage.

GoldenMcOldie · 30/08/2018 07:46

Your thread title is shit. Wishing something dead especially a defenceless small pet probably didn't endear you to anybody with half a heart.

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 07:47

Golden you know this hamster is well looked after and probably has exactly the same life as most other caged animals in the uk? I don't think the hamster has other ideas based on the fact that I don't like her.

It really is funny though!

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 07:51

The thread title was tongue in cheek and anyone with the slightest bit of intelligence can read my threads and realise that I'm not a hamster killer. I just don't like the damn thing. It's looked after and the serially offended, sensitive folks on mn have done what they usually do (and I should've expected that!). I'm a horrible human being apparently for having bad thoughts about a hamster. So yes I find that funny, because it is. It's hilarious.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 30/08/2018 07:52

This is the best thread I have read in ages OP. People who are surprised that there are wild hamsters in the world. People who think the OP is cruel because she hates the fact that she has ended up looking after a hamster.

No one has had a go at the DH or DD who should be taking more responsibility for the hamster.

The OP's hamster will feel no different when it is rehomed, it will still live in a cage and not give a shit how anyone feels about it.

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 07:54

@IllGiveYouSomethingToCryAbout I don't think a lot of people on here are coming across well. Hamster is fine, looked after, just annoying. Folks seem to think that I need to look at vegan websites and that I'm a vile human being for having bad thoughts about a hamster. It's funny! I'm beyond worrying how I come across because I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of loonies!

I’m waiting for the hamster to post now.

‘I don’t think my owner likes me. AIBU?’
So, MDO (male dear owner) bought me as a gift for SDO (small dear owner). FDO didn’t look ecstatic at my arrival but made all the right noises. Since then we’ve had a civil but strained relationship. FDO ensures my cage is clean, I’m always well fed and she brings me things to keep me busy but they’re always presented to me with an eye roll. I can’t be sure but I’m sure she called me ‘that hamster twat’ the other day. Should I LTB or just book a hamster spa day?

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 07:57

checking hamster is grounded so no iPhone until Monday. Sorry.

We had our beautiful hamster PTS last week he was 2 and had cancer . We all cried buckets , interesting and clever little creatures if you invest the time . My husband made his accommodation . It is amazing.Honestly it makes me so sad to read this stuff . My daughter always spent time with him , especially as he got older and needed her more , and of course that's when they leave you . But anyway if you are anywhere near us Huddersfield, we will have him . Animals deserve a decent life , either rehome him carefully , or buy him new accommodation, the type he deserves .DM me if I can help .

jarhead123 · 30/08/2018 08:00

Yep, been there! Thankfully it did die - they don't live long! Hold in there :)

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/08/2018 08:01

I love our hamster. [Irrelevant] 🐁

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 08:04

clara the hamster is fine. I just don't like her. The cage is massive compared to the ones in shops. It's not the size of a house but bigger than recommended. I honestly just don't like the hamster but she really is fine.

My hamster as a child lived until it was five , it had fresh fruit and veg everyday , free roam of my bedroom for a few hours a day and used to sit in our pockets. It also worked out how to open the biscuit tin. He was a really cool hamster
