to be counting down the days until our hamster dies?

Just that really. 30 weeks pregnant and irritable. I hate our hamster. Is smells after a day. It makes a massive racket on its wheel. It has a horrid ugly cage. I feel guilty knowing it can't run around like a wild hamster should/would. It's just annoying and pointless. Hardly ever gets played with by DD. Am I a vile human being to have had a fleeting thought re how nice it is going to be when hamster is no more and refusing to get another?

Blueberry I really did get overinvested in that thread!

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 00:12

trump my attitude? Oh for goodness sake have you read how much research I've done re how to keep this hamster happy? I'm hardly sick now am I. Do you think I actually mentioned any of this to DPs daughter? 🤣 of course not! If I ever saw her being cruel to the hamster she would be in huge trouble. Some drama llamas on this thread reading way in to my sick and twisted thoughts...

OP I had a huge bollocking about a hamster in here once, despite the fucking thing having the life of Riley.
By some of the posters on this thread actually!

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 00:15

umbongo I would like to state that I do not wish death upon all, or any house hamsters!

OP posts:
frogsoup · 30/08/2018 00:18

Being serious for a moment, are you fucking serious trump? The hamster is fed, watered and in a biggish multilevel cage (50 by 70 is hardly an entry-level setup). You think op should be barred from keeping animals because she doesn't think it's any life for a pet compared to zooming around in the wild?!! If it was rehomed it would be in no better a position. I don't even know where to begin with the crazy anthropomorphism of believing that a small rodent cares what its owner thinks about it.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 30/08/2018 00:18

It doesn’t matter. You’ll be on abusive pet owners list now for transmitting negative vibes infront is the hamster. You cruel person. Grin

SnuggMugg · 30/08/2018 00:20

Hamsters sense negative vibes? Oh fuck. No wonder it pissed on me the little bastard!

OP posts:
NotUmbongoUnchained · 30/08/2018 00:22

They do. They’re also mind readers. And you have to perform a little blessing over it’s cage every night so the vegans don’t eat it.

Excited101 · 30/08/2018 00:24

Hamsters must not hibernate! Sometimes they do, by accident- if there’s a sudden chance in temperature. They must then be warmed up gradually to survive as they do no prep for hibernation like other animals.

I’ll be driving Lyme Regis to south London Sunday evening if the pp in London could collect it from me and you could deliver?

Branleuse · 30/08/2018 00:25

In a couple of months your baby will be here and your sense of smell will go back to normal.
How old is he?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 30/08/2018 00:26

@excited101 op lives in Devon...

He knows you hate him, OP. He just knows.

Excited101 · 30/08/2018 00:35

Yes I know NotUmbongoUnchained but depending on whereabouts she could get it to me in Lyme and I could drive it to London where a pp is from who is keen to adopt...

CarolDanvers · 30/08/2018 00:42

You are vile OP.

No she isn't. Get a bloody grip!

TrippingTheVelvet · 30/08/2018 00:54

This place is nuts. Can't believe the roasting you're getting OP. There was a thread on here recently filled with posters regretting having kids and it was nowhere near as brutal.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/08/2018 01:06

We have two dwarfs in a massive cage with so many bridges and dens and levels for them to explore, the cage is 4ft by 2ft with two levels and we've added so many enrichment odds and sods, I think they're the happiest hamsters ever and are very cute to watch.

Syrians need pretty big cages OP. They're generally underhoused. I'm sure you can get it rehomed though, have you searched for hamster rescue?

(No judgement here btw, it wasn't you decision to get the bugger).

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/08/2018 01:12

All those that say he'd live happier and more naturally in the wild.

Go to a pet shop, purchase a Syrian hamster and set it free.

I'd give it about two minutes before it was eaten by a cat, squashed by a car or swooped on by a hawk.

Most predated animals live a pretty short life with a brutal end in the wild.

Be thankful you're not a fucking hamster.

Taylor22 · 30/08/2018 01:20

This has been hilarious.
People on here are just....hilarious.

People setting fire to dogs should be banned from keeping pets.

Not OP who thinks her hamster is a bit of a twat.

OP I had a hamster who I counted down days till it was dead.

Cleaned it every few days. Let it run free for hours in our secure hallway. Bought it awesome toys and treats.
Hated it will a passion. So relived when it kicked the bucket.

I'm going to look for pet cats soon Hmm

VanillaBeans · 30/08/2018 01:31

Oh dear OP :(

Syrian hamsters are incredibly hard to keep; they spend their time building huge tunnels and they are fiercely territorial - despite being clean animals they do not appreciate their territories being cleaned and see it as a threat. Some are more sensitive to this than others. It makes me really angry that they are recommended as good “starter pets” or good pets for children. They really aren’t and I feel terrible for my childhood Syrians now, even though like yours it didn’t have a bad setup.

If you ever want to get another hamster Grin get a dwarf one. I have a little dwarf (am hamster obsessed Blush) kept in a huge 2 tier rabbit hutch - apart from cleaning her sandpit where she poos, I haven’t clean it in months. Still no smell and a happy hamster.

Having smells in the house at 30 weeks pregnant sounds awful, and the noise they make if their cage is so small and generally knowing they aren’t that happy must be stressful - take care of yourself, leave hamster related issues to your DH and good luck with the rehoming!

Tomatoesrock · 30/08/2018 01:32

I have not rtft. Obviously I would not want any harm to come to the hamster or any animal, Though I totally get the OPs frustration, I rehomed ours, the constant racket from the wheel, chewing the bars, the smell, constant cleaning no one bothering to feed her or play with her but me.

Never again, I say her as she delivered 6 babys a week after we bought her, she lost her virginity in the pet shop. I had 7 hamsters for 3 weeks, I had to leave the cage for 10 days stinking for the newborns.

VanillaBeans · 30/08/2018 01:32

So small? So loud I mean!

NasdaqYouTwat · 30/08/2018 01:37

What can of example are you setting for your children.

She feeds it, cleans it, researched how to take care of it and bought appropriate equipment for it. I think her kids will be fine on that front.

Whattheheq · 30/08/2018 01:46

You clearly don’t think YABU judging by your replies. Hmm

You say you’ve don’t research by clearly haven’t.

Balls are not condemned by the RSPCA. A lot of people have different views but no animal welfare company have ever made a statement about them and ones they have made are taken back. It’s up to what you personally feel, if your ball is the correct size, 28cm minimum for a Syrian, then it’ll cause them no harm. If your hamster isn’t getting out enough then I recommend you get a ball whatever your views are.

If your hamsters cage is stinking after one day and they are biting the bars then they’re showing you they are unhappy and stressed. Bad biting is the number 1 stress behaviour.

You say no cage will ever be big enough but surely the bigger the better. There’s no point putting them in tiny cages and them complaing. The recommended minimum is 80cmx50cm but bigger is better.

Please rehome this poor animal to someone who will take proper care for them. Join hamsters UK on Facebook and you will find a new, loving, home straight away.

You aren’t doing enough to care for this animal or find them someone who will care for them.

And no matter what anyone says wishing an animal dead is vile.

Whattheheq · 30/08/2018 01:49

Oh and by flat wheel I assume you mean the flying saucers? Nope, they are a huge nope. They are usually no bigger enough and with no edges they don’t allow for the hamster to run properly, which will be why it’s loud when they’re supposed to be silent. 🙄

The minimum wheel size is 28cm for Syrians.
