Plane Rant

Why do "special diet" people get all their food about an hour earlier than everyone ekse??

Why don't people think to put their chairs back upright at meal times??

Why do people wait until the passengers finally get moving off the plane before they start getting their shit together in the fucking aisle so nobody can get passed??

Does flying bring out the megabitch in anyone else? I spend hours boiling over with fury on a flight, surely I can't be the only one

Currently lying in my lovely hotel bed and despairing at this thread. I have been cabin crew for 35 years and it never ceases to amaze me how utterly intolerant people are to each other. Just be nice and talk to the people sitting by/behind you. Relax, be patient, be kind. It is only for a few hours for goodness sake!! And the passengers causing the most drama over the seat recline in my experience are NEVER EVER the tallest onboard!

Peanutbuttercups21 · 01/09/2018 14:29

Amen to that rascallsall

I fly at lot, het scared and sick, am over 6ft, yet it is usually fine and so are most people

This thread paints a bleak picture

GreenShadow · 01/09/2018 14:58

Yes, this thread paints a bleak picture peanut, but only because you don't hear about people's good experiences here.

I've flown a reasonable amount and can't say I've faced any of these often petty, issues.
Yes, some people recline. So what?
Yes, there are noises and smells you may not like, but for heavens sake, it's only a few hours of your life.
So what if some people are desperate to get out first; just let them. (I've also never understood why people rush to get on the plane first - much better to wait till near the end and have less time on the plane surely?)
Just relax and let it wash over you - you'll arrive in a much better state than getting worked up over something you have no control over.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 15:04

I have rarely faced any unreasonable behaviour on a plane either GreenShadow.

The only one I can remember is when we haad an early morning flight back from Majorca many years ago. We had had to get up at 3.30 am so we were tired when we boarded the plane. I had a toddler in the seat behind me who kept kicking my seat. I asked the mum politely to ask her toddler to stop and it was her reply that really annoyed me.

She said "he can't help it"

I just thought well he can't help it because he doesn't know any better. I am not confrontational and just gritted my teeth. Thank goodness it was a short flight.

ionising · 01/09/2018 16:11

Peanut. I have just had give flights with a few days a apart including two transatlantic.

The meals were five minutes apart from the special diets and not one person reclined into me.

All were great.

Even had a child on a knee next to me. She slept most of it bless her.

necromumda · 01/09/2018 16:22

We actually have a running joke that if there is anyone on the plane who is going to recline their seat, its the one in front of me. EVERY TIME.
Thing is, I am 5 ft and look like it wouldn't be an issue. Its awful.
I have NO problem with people wanting to recline on long haul but why, oh why do I get the one who reclines the second the fasten seat belts sign goes off?? I find it REALLY difficult to view the screens at the angle that results from that.

necromumda · 01/09/2018 16:32

Will add that the reclining isnt just a pain for tall people for many reasons

  • screen visibility is bad (long haul in-flight movies - you just see a weirtd glare on the screen)
  • nightmare to get past for a wee if the recliner is the aisle seat
  • can't hold a book.ipad up straight in front of you at a suitable distance for reading

So on a long haul, you are left with nothing to entertain yourself with at some points on the flight.

Viviene · 02/09/2018 07:47

@partdeux there are courses for nervous flyers.

Ooforfoxsakeridesagain · 02/09/2018 07:56

Parents who don’t give their children headphones WHY?

OliviaStabler · 02/09/2018 12:57

There are courses for nervous flyers.

I have two large Bloody Mary's and I get onto the plane very easily Grin

Shockers · 02/09/2018 14:09

I flew last week with TAP- great little plane- enjoyable flight.

Unfortunately the only possible flight home was with Ryanair last night. It was so fucking cold that I still feel cold and ill now. They split everyone up, so I was seated next to a vocally sulky teen with an enormous bag of McDonalds food. Fortunately, the lady in front wanted to sit with her husband so I fell on my sword and swapped to let her have the seat next to Stinky McMoany Grin

BabyCobra · 03/09/2018 09:48

I have the feeling all these posters complaining about people reclining must not fly very much - or only on short haul hops for holidays etc.

I fly long haul regularly and have never ever had this problem. As soon as the lights are dimmed after the meal service pretty much the entire plane immediately reclines. You would look like a complete idiot if you complained or made a fuss about it.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/09/2018 10:19

Not necessarily BabyCobra. Unless there is a medical need I don't understand why someone needs to recline a seat for a mid afternoon flight from the UK to Majorca for example. I would expect everyone would want to recline their seat on an overnight long haul flight though.

Do they make announcements to request that passengers don't recline their seats until after the meal has been served?

BabyCobra · 03/09/2018 10:30

Do they make announcements to request that passengers don't recline their seats until after the meal has been served?

I don't think they need to. The vast majority of people won't recline until after the meal service. The odd one or two might - but sometimes you win sometimes you lose. If the person in front reclined before dinner, I would inwardly sigh but I certainly wouldn't make a fuss about it. I have never witnessed anyone complain about someone reclining their seat. I have only ever seen the air crew asking people to put it in the upright position for the meal. Never seen anyone refuse to do that either.

If I saw someone make a huge fuss about the person in front reclining, I would immediately assume they were just a difficult person. They type that always finds something to complain about.

MrsJMartintheFirst · 03/09/2018 18:48

I'd make a fuss @BabyCobra on a short haul flight. Long haul flights are designed for reclining. The 13.55 EasyJet Gatwick to Palma is not. I'd think anybody who wanted to invade my already limited space was an awkward person. Not that they'd be able to recline with my knee jamming the back of their seat tho 😉

TSSDNCOP · 03/09/2018 19:19

Nothing like a kid booting your seat back or pounding on their tray all through the flight.

Why don’t they get told to stop it, or at the very least take their effing shoes off.

Pinkyyy · 03/09/2018 21:15

MrsJMartintheFirst

Perhaps you can help me to understand some of the people on this post. How could jamming your knees - with force - into the back of a hard seat be preferable to having less empty space in front of you? I physically can't get my head round it

MrsJMartintheFirst · 03/09/2018 21:20

I don't jam it. Just put it close enough to stop the seat reclining and ramp up the pressure if need be 😉 hth

LoniceraJaponica · 03/09/2018 21:26

"Nothing like a kid booting your seat back or pounding on their tray all through the flight."

IMO that is the most rage inducing thing that can happen to me on a flight.

Pinkyyy · 03/09/2018 21:28

Strange, considering you literally just said

Not that they'd be able to recline with my knee jamming the back of their seat tho

I'd choose less empty space any day.

MrsJMartintheFirst · 03/09/2018 22:02

We will have to agree to disagree then eh @Pinkyyy? And hope you never end up in front of me on a flight 😱
And I didn't say my knee was constantly jammed against the seat in front....nuance of language is tricky on t'internet, isn't it? 😕

Lozz22 · 04/11/2018 22:55

I'm one of those awkward twats ones that has to recline their seat on a Flight. A short haul one 2 hours max I can maybe get away with it. Yes it's uncomfortable but I can manage. A long haul Flight however I cannot manage and I'll end up with my back and chest muscles going into huge spasms. I've spent Flights literally arched back in agony trying to ease the pain! Made a lot worse since an upper spinal and neck injury and nerve damage from a lumbar puncture!! I will try not to have to recline my seat all the way back unless I really have too and I will bring it upright again for mealtimes. The only person I've ever encountered any grief off was Sisters silly nob of an ex fiancé who moaned because he didn't have enough room!! I gave him 2 choices of move somewhere else ie swap with my Mum or Sister or shut the fuck up!! This is also the same nob who when we had a medical emergency on board and was told to remain in our seats so the paramedics could board to get this person off was the same idiot who stood up in the aisles get his bag down preventing the paramedics getting past!! Talking of seat recliners. I do remember years and years ago just as I'd peeled the lid off my pasta and tomato sauce the person in front chose that exact time to recline their seat despite being told not to by the cabin crew because the person behind was just about to start eating their meal (special diet got mine first) next thing as his chair went back my dinner slipped off the tray table and straight into my lap!! I had to spend the rest of the Flight sat in my knickers with an itchy blanket over my legs!! Plus I had to starve then for the rest of the Flight because I couldn't eat anything else because nothing else was suitable!!
