Plane Rant

Why do "special diet" people get all their food about an hour earlier than everyone ekse??

Why don't people think to put their chairs back upright at meal times??

Why do people wait until the passengers finally get moving off the plane before they start getting their shit together in the fucking aisle so nobody can get passed??

Does flying bring out the megabitch in anyone else? I spend hours boiling over with fury on a flight, surely I can't be the only one

It occurs to me that reclining seats were one thing when everyone had decent legroom, but are quite another now airlines cram in more and more rows. The uninitiated might be lulled by the nice adverts with a happy passenger reclining at ease, accepting a glass from a beaming crew member, but once aboard the reality hits pretty darned fast

On the whole, I can see the argument for fixed seats; they wouldn't suit some, but at least everyone would know exactly what to expect and hopefully plan accordingly

Lozz22 · 30/08/2018 18:08

Why do people on special diets get to eat first?

So people like me can safely eat something that’s suitable for them and isn’t going to make them seriously ill. There’s nothing more degrading sitting there vomming into a sick bag in front of a Plane load of passengers or having to run back and forth to the toilet for the whole Flight just because the meal you had had gluten inside it!! Plus as someone else stated it’s also naff eating by yourself and then having to wait an age for them to clear your tray along with everyone else’s once they’ve been served and have finished eating!!

MrsJMartintheFirst · 30/08/2018 18:25

High fives @OneStepSideways I'm another knee hammer here.
@Pinkyyy just hope you're never in front of me then as your seat wouldn't recline with my knee jammed against it 😉 I've have back pain too and find upright best - endorsed by my neuro physio who says those with back pain should either sit up straight or lie fully flat. Reclining in airline chairs is bad for you 😱

OliviaStabler · 30/08/2018 18:49

I was on a flight and was given the choice of two meals. By the time they got to me, the one I wanted was gone. Why offer the choice in advance if they don't have enough for most people to have a decent choice Angry

Pinkyyy · 30/08/2018 18:49

MrsJMartintheFirst

My seat would recline. And if you were purposely trying to ruin my flight then cabin crew would be alerted. Well I'm glad you're worried about my spinal health, but I'll happily continue to recline with a pillow behind my lower back which is the ideal position for me to be in. In fact I have an 11 hour flight in 2 weeks time and shall be reclined for the vast majority of the duration.

I simply cannot get my head around people who would make themselves even more uncomfortable by not reclining when it is a basic function of the seat. Absolutely moronic.

MrsJMartintheFirst · 30/08/2018 18:53

@Pinkyyy that wouldn't happen as I'd refuse to move my leg. Why should your ASN trump mine?

And you're getting bad advice for your spinal health from whoever is telling you a reclining seat and pillow or cushion is best, believe me.

MarthasGinYard · 30/08/2018 18:54

'then cabin crew would be alerted.'

Used to childish seat issues

25 years of dealing with them

Happy days

MrsJMartintheFirst · 30/08/2018 18:55

@Pinkyyy what would the cabin crew do? Chuck me out at 35,000 feet? I'd refuse to move my knee and it's highly unlikely they'd rugby tackle me out of it, isn't it. Don't be silly.

Pinkyyy · 30/08/2018 19:01

I'd be in no away above causing a scene until your behaviour was dealt with. I think you'll find that I've had excellent advice but choose to do what works for me. How ridiculous of you to think it's acceptable to decide whether or not someone else can recline. That is not your decision to make.

MrsJMartintheFirst · 30/08/2018 19:05

Believe me @Pinkyyy id not be moving that knee for love nor money. And I'm on a plane, not at high school so my "behaviour being dealt with" wouldn't be your concern. I could say the same for yours though, ramming your big aeroplane chair into my knees....😬

Hope you didn't pay much for your medical advice 😉?

MrsJMartintheFirst · 30/08/2018 19:07

And how ridiculous of you @Pinkyyy thinking you can invade my space and make me uncomfortable.
Am loving your pomposity though - have you had lessons? 😃

No lessons. All me

MarshaBradyo · 30/08/2018 19:12

On a long haul flight it makes absolute sense to recline

Maybe people need to be put together - the non-recliners in one section, upright

Jaxhog · 30/08/2018 19:17

I can tolerate most things on planes apart from:

  • people who recline their seats into my lap. Some big drunk did that all the way from the Maldives to London. I couldn't even get out of my seat.
  • people who park their noisy kids in front/behind me with bloody toys, and then go and sit 4 rows away. Even when there's a spare seat next to them.
  • drunks. any and all of them.
  • people who suck on their ecigs thinking no-one will notice. We can smell you!

Grrr!

MrsJMartintheFirst · 30/08/2018 19:19

@Pinkyyy am not an awful person but thanks for making that judgement statement due to some random statements on t'internet. You're still not going to recline that seat tho 😃
I'd change my medical advisor if I was you, no sense in chucking your hard earned cash at dud advice eh?

Jaxhog · 30/08/2018 19:21

PS,. to all you cf recliners. A little recline is fine, but don't stick your body in my dinner!!! And as for your backs, my back won't allow me to fully recline without pain. Why is your pain more important than mine?

Pinkyyy · 30/08/2018 19:26

MrsJMartintheFirst

You are more than welcome. As I have already said, twice, I have had the best medical advice but choose to do what helps me with my back pain. I am a dance teacher so I'm more than aware of what works for my body and what doesn't.

sophisticatedsarcasm · 30/08/2018 19:38

I literally zone out on a plane, I sit down put my headphones on and watch whatever’s available. Not that I’m scared, more because it’s uncomfortable and to avoid getting pissed off with other passengers.

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 30/08/2018 19:40

Any actual air staff willing to come amd settle this debate Grin? Seems to me the option to recline wasn't put there for people's health problems but for easier sleep on a night flight. Default position is up therefore if you feel the need to vary from the default you should ensure you are not inconveniencing someone with "freakishly long legs" (and there appear to be rather a number Hmm) who has paid to sit in relative comfort. Agree with a PP - if you have a health problem, book accordingly in advance and don't make someone else sit in discomfort for an entire flight.

EdWinchester · 30/08/2018 19:43

The people that put their seats back as soon as they get on make me murderous. It's SO fucking selfish.

Thankfully I have a scary but nice way of expressing my discomfort, so anyone that does it in front of me can be persuaded to desist until after the meal service Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 30/08/2018 19:44

“Did I imagine it or have some airlines stopped using reclining seats?”

Neither Ryanair or Jet2 have reclining seats.

“The average height for a man is 5'8 in the UK. I reckon you need to be at least 6'3 before you have legs long enough that you 'need' to stop the person in front reclining.”

Wrong! OH is 6’2”, but his legs are too long for flying in normal seat on short haul flights. As a result he always pays for extra legroom seats.

strangeronabus · 30/08/2018 19:49

Yes I'd be interested to have a member of Cabin Crew to give perspective.
I don't recline on short hall, but do after eating on long haul. But I do give the heads up to the person behind me before doing so.

I think half the problem is that so many passengers are stressed and tired. We always seem to have to get up at 4am, then navigate the M25, parking, bag drop then security. By the time we board we're tired and crabby, then we realise we have 8 hours in a tiny seat with films we've already seen.
Plus, seats seem to be getting smaller and narrower.

MarthasGinYard · 30/08/2018 19:50

So....

Upright position obviously for take off and landing.

Free to recline during flight although it's polite to be upright for meals as easier all around for everyone to eat in an already confined seating pitch

Doesn't always work this way as this thread illustrates.

Did a flight pre 9/11 when Captain came out and told two pax continually arguing over seat recline to "grow up" Smile

MarthasGinYard · 30/08/2018 19:51

'But I do give the heads up to the person behind me before doing so.'

Thank you

As I do when I travel

This tiny gesture works wonders
