Plane Rant

Why do "special diet" people get all their food about an hour earlier than everyone ekse??

Why don't people think to put their chairs back upright at meal times??

Why do people wait until the passengers finally get moving off the plane before they start getting their shit together in the fucking aisle so nobody can get passed??

Does flying bring out the megabitch in anyone else? I spend hours boiling over with fury on a flight, surely I can't be the only one

Totally bizarre.

So the non-recliners if the person in front reclines do you still sit bolt up right? How committed to the principle are you?

LogicallyLost do you ever recline?

MarshaBradyo · 31/08/2018 15:29

Also odd that people even care if others get their food first or eat a special meal

FancyADoughnut · 31/08/2018 15:29

Reading this thread I am a bit Shock at some people. I would like to think it's because they can say what they like on a forum but I suspect a lot of them are genuine about how they behave on a flight.

I should point people to this thread when they ask me why I 'waste' my money on business and first tickets.

LogicallyLost · 31/08/2018 15:34

@MarshaBradyo, I was upright as it wouldn't have made me any more comfy but then done exactly what was making me uncomfortable to someone else.

pastaandpestoagain · 31/08/2018 15:36

Firstly I am very envious of all these tall, all leg people being neither of these things.
logical I don't see it as aggressive to want to use the functionality built into an item for the purpose of being used.
We been given a large company truck, there wasn't any choice. I don't go around insisting that the cars that park beside me don't use all of their car park space because it makes it difficult for me to get in and out of my car. They have every right to use their space as they see fit, it is my job to manage my space.

MarshaBradyo · 31/08/2018 15:39

Logically fair enough, out of interest was it a long haul or over night flight?

I’m really only talking about long haul, I don’t recline on short

Lizzie48 · 31/08/2018 15:42

I'd never heard that reclining was 'frowned upon' before coming onto Mumsnet. I always thought that the etiquette was to keep your seat upright up until after the meal has been cleared away, then the majority appear to recline their seats. But then I have mostly been on night flights when long haul. On shorter flights, I mostly haven't used the recline function, as it's basically pointless. What with takeoff and landing, meal times and turbulence, there isn't really all that much time to recline your seat anyway.

LogicallyLost · 31/08/2018 15:42

Gobsmacked that people are willing to cause pain and discomfort because they "paid for their right to recline". I don't see how the truck is an appropriate analogy.

MarshaBradyo · 31/08/2018 15:49

I do not know how people sleep on a long haul upright - doesn’t your head bob forward?

If everyone does it it doesn’t cause pain, the opposite, it aids sleep and comfort

A simple solution for the knee jammers would be to shade part of the plane map as non-reclining and put them together

LogicallyLost · 31/08/2018 15:50

@MarshaBradyo, 8 hours not overnight.

pastaandpestoagain · 31/08/2018 15:53

The truck thing was the only example in my RL I could think of where I take up all on the space I am allocated but don't insist that others give up their space to make my life easier.

LogicallyLost · 31/08/2018 15:53

on the seats on that flight, me reclining wouldn't help (to do with angle required to slide legs under seat in front).

like the non-reclining section, good idea :)

pastaandpestoagain · 31/08/2018 15:55

Also I am in more pain and discomfort if I don't use my allocated space, and recline, so I'm not sure why I should be giving up my space and suffering discomfort unexpectedly. On the plus side at least you get to be tall and leggy the rest of the time.

pastaandpestoagain · 31/08/2018 16:15

The non reclining section is a good idea.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 16:20

The non reclining section is a good idea.

I agree. Maybe the airline could have a system of locking the seats so the number of non reclining seats can be flexible. People can specify what they want when they prebook their seats.

MarthasGinYard · 31/08/2018 17:02

'People who take their shoes off and cross their legs. One man seated on the other side of an aisle and one seat ahead did this and it wasn't pleasant.'

These are usually the mingers who use the loo barefoot or in socks.

ionising · 31/08/2018 17:18

So the non-recliners if the person in front reclines do you still sit bolt up right? How committed to the principle are you?

LogicallyLost do you ever recline?

Never! As it is a dick move and puts the person behind you into discomfort.

A recliner is not a right. I never see air fayres saying " reclining seat". As on some flights it isnt there and as a pp said its from days gone by. It should be totally banned in the cattle market now.

Also never heard of anyone with back problems advised to not sit up right or flat completely.Confused

Just did a ten hour over night flight ' upright ' as most did. I think the Thomas cook levers are quite hidden. I love this.

ionising · 31/08/2018 17:20

'People who take their shoes off and cross their legs. One man seated on the other side of an aisle and one seat ahead did this and it wasn't pleasant.'

Did it smell?

I would only do this on a 2 by 2 seat flight with oh next to me or a three if dd was with us.

thenightsky · 31/08/2018 17:46

economy class 1970

Belindabauer · 31/08/2018 17:52

I'm sure people have been advised to remove socks and shoes and also to take regular walks when on long journeys. Does anyone else remember this?
I agree with the non recliner section.
They generally have made pitches smaller than they were back in the day when I travelled as a child.
It's the same with massive hand luggage, it's often due to the fees they charge for suitcases.
It was much better in the olden days, when there was no weight restriction and you could take liquids on board.
I don't recall anyone taking bulky hand luggage and there was no need for extra leg room.

Gersemi · 31/08/2018 17:57

I can’t think of an 11 hour overnight non-stop train journey within this country.

Why does it have to be 11 hours? Presumably if you're desperate to recline you may well want to on a 3, 4 or 5 hour journey?

MisterT373 · 31/08/2018 17:58

The idea of taking shoes off is a wrong one as your feet will swell and then getting shoes back on is an issue.

MisterT373 · 31/08/2018 17:59

It did smell. He was a solo traveller on a 10 hour flight in a 3-3-3 configuration. He crossed his legs so his foot was in the aisle.

takeittakeit · 31/08/2018 18:44

ncool - please feel free to quote the disability act 2010 to me- I am v familiar with it as well.

If you can come up with a solution as to where my or my partners femora can go, when sat bolt up right with our femora parallel to the seat and going out to their fixed length then great.

When stuck in knock knee class, DP has to angle his into my seat because they physically do not fit!! Hence why we try to avoid travelling in KK class as much as possible.

I am not discrimintating against a disabled person by sitting bolt upright in my seat in the space provided for me!! IF you can let me know how that fits into the act then please enlighten me for the future!!

For those of us who are vertically challenged when it comes to airlines, one tends to develop a very sanguine approach and accept that for the short time we are encased in KK class, we will smile and stay calm!

onetimeposter · 31/08/2018 18:45

Whyd do dirty bastards feel ot acceptable to drop fucking stinkbombs at mealtime (or any other time)
