To think the gov should be giving some proper advice re booking flights and holidays for next year post Brexit

I had no idea re the open skies issue or that insurance companies won't be insuring cancellations caused by Brexit. Having seen two threads on MN discussing it,I now do.

Not everybody can afford to lose the cost of holidays and flights, many need to book now for next summer as flights get released.

It's a bit late and a bit shit that consumers aren't getting warnings or advice.

They can't. They don't know what they are doing!

QuitMoaning · 28/08/2018 18:51

Whilst I understand your concerns, holiday plans might need to take a back seat. My employer is potentially looking at losing a third of its income stream which means substantial number redundancies (maybe in the thousands)

My OH business (owned by him) May well go under.

We have bigger problems than booking flights abroad.

Bombardier25966 · 28/08/2018 18:52

I don't disagree with you, but it's one of a long list of issues that they don't have the first idea about. I'd prefer that they focus on vital issues such as ensuring medication is readily available and finding ways to encourage overseas medical professionals to join the NHS (and those already here stop leaving).

Or just cancel the whole thing altogether (but I know that's not going to happen, respect the vote, yadda yadda).

LizzieSiddal · 28/08/2018 18:53

To be guest there will be more pressing issues than going abroad.

Like medicine and food shortages. Mind you I’d love to book a flight somewhere lovely and not come back to this backward looking country.

BonnieF · 28/08/2018 18:53

I work in aviation, for a major U.K. carrier.

We have been asking the DOT & CAA for clarification and guidance about operations post-Brexit for the past two years. They have provided almost nothing.

Our view is that this isn’t because they don’t want to tell us, it’s because they don’t know.

We are currently accepting bookings for Summer 19 on the basis that it will be business as usual, but if this turns out not to be the case, it is inevitable that all airlines will invoke ‘force majeure’ clauses in their T&Cs, because any disruption will be due to factors outside our control, ie useless incompetent politicians.

LizzieSiddal · 28/08/2018 18:54

*honest not guest.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/08/2018 18:56

Isn’t the brexiteers latest argument ‘no one has a crystal ball’?

Yabu expecting to plan a trip overseas. Apparently.

maZebraltov · 28/08/2018 18:57

Unless A50 gets revoked, there will probably be a hasty temp deal arranged in January to allow the planes to keep flying. No one can say what that deal will be until January (roughly... could slip into mid March!).

BarbarianMum · 28/08/2018 19:01

Funny. How many more times do you need to be told that it will all be fine and anyone saying it wont be is a remoaner?

Oh and no deal's better than a bad deal.

And it's all Europe's fault anyway.

So that's ok then. Go ahead and book. Smile

keyboardkate · 28/08/2018 19:03

We need a Leave voter to answer your questions. Everyone else knows this is a total clusterfuck coming down the tracks, and air travel is just one of them.

But hey, let's get our soveriegnty back, take back control of everything, reduce bureaucracy... see that last one. Bureaucracy. There will be more of that needed in a post Brexit Britain. Oh the irony.

Anyway, as an optimist I do not believe that Hard Brexit will happen.

Heads on stakes for treason if it does. But I doubt it.

topcat2014 · 28/08/2018 19:04

@Quitmoaning - that is shxxty news! What line of work are you in?

SkiFiend · 28/08/2018 19:07

They can't give us advice because they don't know themselves.

Personally I think it's most likely that there will be some sort of deal sufficient to allow transition, or that in a so-called "no deal" Brexit there will in fact be some basic deals (enough to keep planes flying etc). I think the chances of no deal at all are quite low (and in that scenario, people missing out on summer holidays will be the least of our problems).

Having said that, who knows? Take a punt and book now, even though there's a chance things will go pear-shaped, and lump it if they do? Or hang on and pay a bit more later. Or have a holiday in the UK.

What an absolute mess.

P3onyPenny · 28/08/2018 19:08

People need to book flights for many things other than holidays and to plan ahead.

The complete lack of any info or even a mention is ridiculous.

OP posts:
pointythings · 28/08/2018 19:10

They haven't got a clue. About anything at all. But apparently No Deal won't be the end of the world - the Prime Minister says so, so it must be true. Hmm

I just hope my mum doesn't die any time immediately after March 29th because I reckon neither of her children will be making it to her funeral in Holland if she does.

keyboardkate · 28/08/2018 19:15

I wonder if ferries and the Eurostar will also be affected. Probably not to the same extent as flights. But you better have your short visitor visa in your hand I'd say! And the EHIC will no longer be valid either, and you will need a Green Card insurance to drive in EU, and on and on it goes.

It appears to be true that a tiny cabal in the Tory Party is planning on wrecking this country. You could not make it up.

But never mind, JRM says it will only take 50 years or so for Britain to see the benefits of leaving. Amazing optimism there!

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 28/08/2018 19:21

Im hoping its sorted by August

Supposed to be going on holiday and at that point it'll all have been paid for...with no chance of getting there

P3onyPenny · 28/08/2018 19:34

The cock up that is Brexit is bad enough but the fact they're just saying nothing, not even giving a statement or any advice what so ever is frankly shite. People need to plan.

OP posts:
LakieLady · 28/08/2018 19:52

People need to plan

Absolutely, but the government needs to plan first so that the rest of us can work out wtf to do.

There are so many possible outcomes: no-deal, BRINO, Switzerland deal, defer the whole idea until people forget there ever WAS a referendum, have a 2nd referendum and pray remainers win - the government has no fucking clue whatsoever what is going to happen.

They can't even work out which way their own members are going to vote in parliament, let alone what the opposition and DUP are likely to do.

They can't give advice about what to do next summer, it'd be less reliable than a long range weather forecast for the year ahead.

LizzieSiddal · 28/08/2018 19:55

The complete lack of any info or even a mention is ridiculous.

But here are hundreds of things that we aren’t getting info on. Why specifically are you worried about flights?

P3onyPenny · 28/08/2018 20:12

Because flights for next year are cheaper now, people need to plan to travel for all sorts of things now. Also people are booking and the lack of any info or statement means many seem to be unaware they could lose their flights, they won't be insured and will thus lose their money. If there was more info or a warning people could plan round it.

OP posts:
DroningOn · 28/08/2018 20:18

We're not booking anything or planning any larger expenses next year just incase we find ourselves in a poor financial situation.

maZebraltov · 28/08/2018 20:58

Brexit is an enormous inconvenience. That is the very best I can say about it. (sigh)

QueenDoris · 28/08/2018 21:03

If there is no deal then we will have bigger worries than holidays. Like the Brexit death squads going door to door dishing out punishment beatings for anyone found with pesto or garlic in their larders.

And also the flesh eating Brexit zombies will be roaming the land

GhostofFrankGrimes · 28/08/2018 21:04

The electorate has asked an inept government to deliver the moon on a stick. What could possibly go wrong?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 28/08/2018 21:05

And also the flesh eating Brexit zombies will be roaming the land

Do they prey on unicorns?
