To wish we was warned about spiders

We're renting a lovely two bedroom house been here nearly a month now and since we've moved in it's been nothing but constant spiders.

Next door neighbour said to my OH "that house is full of spiders isn't it"
So the landlord obviously knows and has even had a chat about it with next door.

I can't relax I have to look around each room before I walk in, if there's cobwebs above my head I put a towel over and run through!

The spiders aren't small either! OH has started naming them.

One I've just found in this kitchen sink this morning and that's small compared to the majority of them.

Get insect bombs that cover spiders. That should do it for 6 months.

We have periods of the year when there are a lot of spiders. Nasty spiders that kill people. I don’t like them. Thongs (flip flops) are an advantage, brilliant spider killers.

We always leave spiders like daddy long legs alone, harmless and keep down flies which are more annoying than spiders. Harmless spiders that are disturbing to look st or have running around (Huntsmen etc) are relocated outside. Deadly spiders are killed on sight.

eyycarumba · 28/08/2018 11:55

@Branleuse I've been afraid of them as long as I can remember - no parent had an issue with them. My mother's house used to have the most horrifically large spiders and she would purposely leave them alone. Never been bitten. They just freak me out.

I have no problem with daddy long legs though and can pick them up, weirdly, or most other bugs.

PattiStanger · 28/08/2018 11:57

My house is full of spiders, tbh I assumed that was normal, it wouldn't occur to me to mention it if I had to rent it out for some reason.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 28/08/2018 11:58

Disfordarkchocolate Sounds like your flat may have attracted butterflies looking for somewhere to hibernate over winter. Species like the small tortoiseshell pick houses to overwinter, and then they wake up when the humans living there put the heating on and whack the temperature up.

Northernparent68 · 28/08/2018 12:21

Buy an insect fogger

TeaByTheSeaside · 28/08/2018 12:32

I accidentally discovered that Indorex (for fleas) kills spiders.

If you spray the carpets and upholstery in every room and keep the windows and doors closed and go out. When you come back, they will have all fallen out of their hidey holes and died then you can hoover them up.

But it is spider season. We've got loads as well. I think they're bigger this year because there's been so many insects around due to the hot weather.

Hopefully it'll improve once the winter starts.

TheTraceNextDoor · 28/08/2018 13:05

a lot of people wouldnt be bothered/see it as a problem so I don't see why the landlord should have mentioned it

Wtf, I think most people would actually be very bothered indeed

TheTraceNextDoor · 28/08/2018 13:08

Oh grow up

Oh piss off Hmm

furandchandeliers · 28/08/2018 13:20

@TheTraceNextDoor make me Grin

TheTraceNextDoor · 28/08/2018 13:28

fur Is that a threat? Grin

PattiStanger · 28/08/2018 13:30

Does everyone else live in spider free homes? I can't imagine a landlord ever mentioning it.

TheTraceNextDoor · 28/08/2018 13:34

Patt I don't live in a spider free home, but I don't see one everyday and I certainly don't have them pop up like OP does

Seems a bit distressing really

There's a difference between the odd spider here and there to walking into cobwebs and having huge ones in the sink.

I remember my aunty's house in Milton Keynes being FULL of them. I hated it. I now associate MK with spiders Grin

furandchandeliers · 28/08/2018 13:36

Ha doesn't even work you idiot GrinGrinGrin

SilverDragonfly1 · 28/08/2018 13:38

This stuff is bulletproof. We don't even get spiders in our rickety wooden shed any more.

furandchandeliers · 28/08/2018 13:38

I'd like to know if being afraid of spiders is something we just learn from our parents, I hated them as a child but didn't want my children to be scared so I decided not to show them I didn't like them, and it's worked, they will pick them up and put them outside.

I think I must've been scared of them because I saw my mum screaming when she saw them.

misspops · 28/08/2018 13:41

I’m not a fan of them, but I don’t kill them. They’re pretty useful in the food chain.
My mum would rescue them from my bedroom when I was little and take them outside. I think that’s why I don’t want to kill them. Live and let live.

Purpleartichoke · 28/08/2018 13:42

Where I live, the landlord is responsible for getting an exterminator. Do you really just accept spider infested homes there?

adaline · 28/08/2018 13:54

You need a cat.

We have two and they eat any kind of bug or insect that gets in the house!

maskingtape · 28/08/2018 13:57

purpleartichoke - landlords aren't responsible for spiders in the UK. They are harmless.

OP I sympathise. I hate the hairy terrors.

The most spider free house I ever lived in was a house without a garden (only a yard). They love gardens. My current house isn't bad either as I can keep it really clean (wooden floors mainly). I clean well 1-2 times per week and then do a deep clean (cupboards, skirting boards, windows, ledges etc) once every 6 weeks or so. I think this helps.

It's spider season at the moment so I'm keeping the windows closed most of the time.

Could you pay for a deep clean and go out while they're doing it? This should get rid of the problem.

EdisonLightBulb · 28/08/2018 14:11

Oh I love spiders, I wouldn't mind at all.

And yes, cats do catch and eat them, I have to save them before my big dumb cat mauls them to death.

1forAll74 · 28/08/2018 14:24

It's spider season as has been said, but you can get to, maybe not like spiders, but learn to ignore them. Some of them stay in the same place for ages, as in a bath if not used.. or in a high corner of a room. Some of them like to take a trip across the carpet of floor, then disappear for a while. I like to catch them in an old beaker. and put them outside, but was told that inside spiders should not be put outside, !!

One of my three cats sometimes eats tiny spiders,(not nice), and paws down on a big spider and squashes it, Rarely, you can find spiders that can bite, but usually found in old houses,in dark and dusty old attics. sorry about that, was just an afterthought!

lynsey91 · 28/08/2018 14:54

I am terrified of spiders, can't even look at a picture of one. I have seen many in my 64 years and certainly not got used to them. I could never in a million years use a glass to put them out or even a spider catcher. I can't usually even stay in the room if there is a spider

strangelove99 · 28/08/2018 15:02

Get a cat!

Since getting our bad tempered little dimwit I very rarely see a spider. She loves chasing things that move fast so she's a perfect spider hunter!

(We rent too, our landlords have never had a problem with us having a cat.)

Branleuse · 28/08/2018 15:12

Can I just point out that a cat is far more likely to bite you than a spider ;)

DollyDayScream · 28/08/2018 15:24

You need to do a thorough deep clean. Every nook and cranny needs to be vacuumed. Spray very strong flea killer around the skirting and any other likely place.
