To wish we was warned about spiders

We're renting a lovely two bedroom house been here nearly a month now and since we've moved in it's been nothing but constant spiders.

Next door neighbour said to my OH "that house is full of spiders isn't it"
So the landlord obviously knows and has even had a chat about it with next door.

I can't relax I have to look around each room before I walk in, if there's cobwebs above my head I put a towel over and run through!

The spiders aren't small either! OH has started naming them.

One I've just found in this kitchen sink this morning and that's small compared to the majority of them.

To wish we was warned about spiders

Those tegenerias are everywhere as its the season for them. Theyre harmless and docile.
Best bet if you hate them is to make sure you leave any cellar spiders. Theyre less alarming to look at and they can take down those house spiders like you wouldnt believe.

I suggest maybe researching more about spiders and watching them a bit. We live amongst a world of animals but its an ecosystem at risk. We need to appreciate the animal kingdom

Nothisispatrick · 28/08/2018 10:31

We have a spidery flat this time of year (although I haven’t seen any yet this year!). Last year I put conckers everywhere, and our neighbour puts old tea bags all over her window ledges, we also have two insect hating cats so often when I find them they’re already dead.

PatchworkGirl · 28/08/2018 10:34

If it helps, leave a towel hanging half in, half out of the bath and sinks overnight. The spiders will be there anyway - it's the season for them - but they will be able to climb out and you'll never have to see them!

PollyPofter · 28/08/2018 10:38

Peppermint I have it in car always now after nearly crashing

eyycarumba · 28/08/2018 10:40

I hate spiders. My flat is ground floor and I have the exact same problem, it's some type of utopia for spiders, I have even had those funnel web types in my home which has led to me locking ourselves outside more than once. You would turn the lights on walking into a room and 3 would be descending from overhead. 6 yrs in and I still get several house spiders a week but no where near as bad it was. Was the house empty before? I would look to see if any nooks and crannies can be filled (I had loads around the skirting where the funnels lived), I also tape around any windows I don't use (but my windows aren't fitted the best), spiders tend to go where they have food, so if you get any bugs like louse or silver fish they could be attracted to that. I have to hoover almost every day, walls and ceiling. I have spider sprays which don't really work, I also keep conkers around but I don't know if they've helped with the decline as they're often covered in webs.

onetimeposter · 28/08/2018 10:41

All the furore, about spoders killing flies....
So does fly spray
Also flies are outside
Ergo, spiders need to be outside

keepingbees · 28/08/2018 10:44

Maybe it was the previous tenant that told the neighbour, the landlord may not know?
I lived in a house like this, no idea why but this time of year I used to get several huge spiders in the living room every single evening/night. It was a fairly old house, I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I've lived in modern houses for the last 8 years and could count on one hand the spiders I've encountered. Also living near things like woods can make a difference.

Pitapotamus · 28/08/2018 10:46

Get a humane spider catcher from amazon. I removed about 100 spiders (no exaggeration) from my house in no time at all, got rid of all the cobwebs etc. And now a few are back but I’ll just remove them too and slowly but surely I shall win!!

The humane spider catcher only works on the spindly ones, not on the big fat black ones. My husband as to “deal” with those.

Last year we had a big problem with the big black fat spiders and we got a proper professional exterminator in to fumigate the loft. You could also try that.

Good luck!

ShortbreadCannotBeLonger · 28/08/2018 10:46

Honestly, might sound cheesy, but I think everything happens for a reason and it's a blessing you began renting that house.

What you have is a phobia - not a fear - because it is irrational.

You're being put through exposure therapy. The more you see them, the less scared you'll become (stop avoiding them and getting into new habits like putting towels over your head). Force yourself to scoop them up into a glass one by one and put them outside.

Speaking from experience. I moved here a while ago and was terrified of all things creepy and crawly. This is an old cottage in the middle of nowhere and we get tons of spiders. Every Sunday, DD and I go around and have a contest to see who can round up the most and put them outside. They don't scare me at all anymore.

Last night I fell asleep even though there were two crawling across my ceiling. This morning I had a shower even though there was a giant one right in the corner above the shower head.

I would never have been able to stay in the same room as a spider for more than 30 seconds before I moved here.

You can't live the rest of your life being irrationally frightened. This is your chance to embrace the free dosage of exposure therapy that's been thrust upon you and finally take back control.

Grab a glass and round 'em up Grin

ToeToToe · 28/08/2018 10:55

Ooh, we had a massive (really massive - could barely fit a pint glass over it) on DS's bedroom door last night.

I had one crawl on me once, it just felt like when a hair's tickling our skin - it was surprisingly un-frightening.

They don't hurt you (or v rarely anyway). Buy a spider-catcher from Amazon and put them outside.

beeefcake · 28/08/2018 10:57

I use citrus zoflora and the Christmas cinnamon room spray (they hate both of these things)

You could also try a wax burner with some peppermint oil

3stonedown · 28/08/2018 10:57

I spray all the windows and doors with no more spiders. It really works! Makes the flat smell a bit pepperminty for a day though.

AllesAusLiebe · 28/08/2018 11:05

I very rarely have spiders (I vacuum so frequently that they run for their lives! 😂), but on Friday night I found 2 large ones swinging around in my kitchen, so I really do think it’s a bad time of year and the hot weather we’ve had probably hasn’t helped.

Should the landlord have warned you, though? No, sorry. It’s just one of those things. You do have my sympathy - they make me really jumpy. Sad

Branleuse · 28/08/2018 11:08

i find it really incredible the amount of people that are irrationally scared of spiders. Was it passed on to you by your parents? Who taught you it? I am pretty sure that you havent all been bitten by one, because there are very few spiders in the UK that would bite you, even if provoked, and none that would seek you out.
Its bizarre to me that people dont seem to have a massive fear of flies or mosquitos and just see them as an annoyance, and yet spiders, its an actual fear from nowhere, and its so damn many of you. Just weird. Plus damaging, because you pass it on to your own children, and we NEED our spiders

Lweji · 28/08/2018 11:11

I'm quite tolerant of the occasional spider or even cobweb, for the sake of controlling other bugs in the house.

But, if the house did have many spiders, then I'd do a thorough clean and try to fill up any gaps or holes to prevent bugs (including spiders) from entering the house.

As a rule, I avoid using insecticide, as they always have some effect on us, even if deemed safe. Unless there's a flee infestation. Shock

3stonedown · 28/08/2018 11:12

Branleuse I think the fact that so many people are scared of spiders is the reason I am too. It's not from my parents, my mum actually likes them and don't think dad is bothered (haven't lived with him to see). I guess when I was at school my friends would freak out so I did too and it just developed from there. I really try not to react in front of DD just say cheerily "Oh hello Mr Spider, would you like to go home?" and quickly put him out the door. I hope DD will be ok with them!

LuluJakey1 · 28/08/2018 11:12

They die if you put them outside. They are house spiders.

Roseandvioletcreams · 28/08/2018 11:17

Niether parent was scared but I am.
I think looking back it was cruel they didn't do more to help me and control them.

Roseandvioletcreams · 28/08/2018 11:18

They are looking for mates, mates smell hide smell then you won't get them coming in.

WatercolourFlower · 28/08/2018 11:18

I rented a house like this! It was horrible, spiders everywhere. They would crawl up the back of the sofa, be in the shower, everywhere! The worst one was in the laundry basket. I was just emptying it, getting items ready to wash. There was the biggest spider sitting on a sock I picked up, never dropped it so quickly!
I actually fainted because I saw one on my bedcovers. I got up SO quickly that I just fainted, never happened before or since.

Out of interest, are you in the countryside? The rental I lived in was surrounded by fields, meaning all the spiders came inside. I second the peppermint spray, just put it everywhere and hopefully it will deter them.

GummyGoddess · 28/08/2018 11:20

Have just ordered a spider repellent in the hope it works. The ones in our house are bigger than my hand and too big to go up the vacuum. It's pointless putting them outside as they're house spiders so will just die.

I do leave the skinny ones as long as they're in a corner as they keep the scary fat ones away.

hungryhippo90 · 28/08/2018 11:22

We had some huge ones in our old house, it’s late aug early September so they’ll start coming in.

Give the place a really good once over.

Hoover a couple of times a day.
Fill in any holes or cracks. Polish all your surfaces, every few days move everything or if you can just hoover under everything. You’ll soon be rid.

hungryhippo90 · 28/08/2018 11:22

Now, I’m off to go clean my house.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/08/2018 11:24

I once lived in a rented flat that had random butterflies appear. One came down the chimney on Christmas Day when we were about to eat dinner. Lovely to look at but when they randomly appear over several months it's very odd!

CookPassBabtridge · 28/08/2018 11:28

They'll stop mid to late september once they've had their fun with the ladies!
