To think that my (upcoming) landlord should pay to put me in a hotel?

RogelioMyBrogelio · 27/08/2018 08:32

I’m due to move into a flat next Monday, but unfortunately I’ve had a call today to say that the upstairs flat has had a burst pipe and my (soon to be) flat has significant damage to the ceiling, walls and electrics. An insurance assessor is coming tomorrow apparently, but my new (upcoming) landlord says I won’t be moving in next week by the looks of it. I’ve asked if she can put me up in a hotel until then, as my current tenancy ends next week too. She has said no as the new tenancy hasn’t started so she doesn’t have me covered on her insurance, and I also haven’t signed a contract (she did send me one but I was just gonna leave it until the day I moved in to sign it). I have given her a month’s deposit, which she has protected and is offering to send back to me today out her own pocket so I don’t have to claim, but what I really want is to be in that flat! a contract has been drawn up and dated 2 weeks ago so AIBU to think that the protections stipulated in that contract should apply to me (it says in the case of emergencies that the landlord will put the tenants up in a hotel)

Well I haven’t disappeared. I rang the landlord and we’ve come to an agreement (sort of). If the repair works take more than a month I’m going to officially back out and she will send me my deposit straight back. Funnily enough she wasn’t up for meeting to sign the contract today Hmm I also managed to get hold of someone from the agency for my current rental property. My current landlord has allowed an extension to allow for this potential one month. I pay £70 more per month for my current property, I asked if new landlord was able to cover this for September and she said no, I’ll probably get told I’m being cheeky but I actually think it’s the least she could have done. No the flood isn’t her fault but it’s not mine either!! And I budgeted to have £70 more in September (plus the deposit back from current property)

@RogelioMyBrogelio
Why the fuck would she sign the contract when her flat is unusable? Moreover you have shown yourself as being sneaky and dishonest and have asked her for money she has no need to give you.

I can't believe you are side eyeing her as though she is the dodgy one!

I'd drop you as a tenant straightaway. You really don't think you are entitled in anyway do you? Do you resent all Landlords?

NameChange30 · 27/08/2018 16:30

Christ, what a twat you are.

Somanymistakes · 27/08/2018 16:32

@dorisdog

No one has slagged off renters and lower income people on this thread. You are reading it through you own bias and seeing meanings and insinuations which just aren't there.

And if it stops you being able to see what is being said, it is a chip on your shoulder not a heightened sense of social fairness.

MN is notorious for damning landlords.

Sorry for double post. It said it didn't post and to retry.

drJava · 27/08/2018 16:33

haha @AnotherEmma

Your reply may well be deleted but you said it so succinctly.

I have a feeling the OP is a millenial.

@drJava
Really, I imagined she was in her early 30s.

@RogelioMyBrogelio
How old are you?
We can't decide.

Thanks.

Omg. I am so sorry for the multiple posts! Blush

It keeps saying it isn't sending and to retry. Grin

drJava · 27/08/2018 16:43

So, how old do you think she is?

Smile
LyndorCake · 27/08/2018 16:45

Why should she have to cover the difference in your rent when it literally had nothing to do with her?
I budgeted winning the lottery this month, should someone pay me the difference because I didn't win?

A0001 · 27/08/2018 16:47

but I actually think it’s the least she could have done.

Just another saying you are a complete and utter cheeky fucker..
Not signing a contract so you could back out if needed then being of the opinion that she owes you, due to this contract that hasn’t been signed.

Un-fucking-believable

SoupDragon · 27/08/2018 16:50

No the flood isn’t her fault but it’s not mine either!!

Not signing the contract was your fault though.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/08/2018 16:51

You think subbing you £70 is the least she could have done when you refused to sign the rental agreement in the first place. Better still perhaps she should give you 6 months free for all the inconvenience and mental torment. Bless. 🙄

*Well we don’t often get a self confessed CF on here do we?
We often wonder who these people are. Well now we’ve found ourselves a pet one for us to amuse ourselves with. She just can’t see it can she?

Ignoramusgiganticus. You and op need to change usernames.

This thread really does keep giving even without Somanymistakes making well, so many mistakes. Wink

NasdaqYouTwat · 27/08/2018 16:52

If I was the LL I'd be making sure the repairs take longer than a month.

NameChange30 · 27/08/2018 16:52

Yes, I wrote it knowing it would probably be deleted, but posted it anyway!

I disagree with you about millennials. I don’t like prejudice towards people of any age. I saw a satirical post the other day about the irony of people of a certain generation, who went to uni for free and got on the housing ladder when houses were affordable, criticising “entitled” millennials. Actually the older generation have fucked over the younger generation in many ways. Not least Brexit. But I am digressing majorly... my actual point is that you get twats unreasonable people of all ages.

Nikephorus · 27/08/2018 16:53

I’ve reread the thread and I really can’t see that people are looking down at op for being a renter not owner.
Yep, pretty sure they're looking down at OP for being a complete CF.

Nikephorus · 27/08/2018 16:55

Terrible isn't it, going off to fight in wars that they didn't come back from for instance. Total bastards.

dorisdog · 27/08/2018 17:00

Mummyoflittledragon Well, fair enough. Some of seemed a bit 'anti-tenant' to me, with comments about how difficult it is being a landlord, and how awful tenants are generally. (One person was complaining that they'd had to get rid of their 'other' house, which was going to be their 'pension.') I just feel like some people don't realise how lucky they are to even be able to afford to have more than one house, and they seem to forget that tenants are actually paying off a long term asset for them. Mainly, I'm just glad that the landlords I know DO seem to appreciate that.

Funnily enough she wasn’t up for meeting to sign the contract today Hmm

Of course she didn't. Why the fuck would she? Why the face when you typed that?

She has no obligation to you, because you didn't sign the contract. Your choice!

flobella · 27/08/2018 17:06

“Not signing a contract so you could back out if needed then being of the opinion that she owes you, due to this contract that hasn’t been signed. “

What she said.
