To ask if anybody lives in one of the UK's oddest place names like beer, nasty, etc.?

I just googled beer and found the beer Church of England primary school. I'm guessing the place is named because of a brewery or something? But why is nasty called nasty? Or do I really want to know? Maybe it's particularly nasty weather?

Interesting that Nether Wallop is on the picture in the OP
but they miss out Middle Wallop and Over Wallop and thus the joy that is
the Wallops Village Hall

I'm from not far from Ugley. I still snicker when I drive through.

Moody123 · 26/08/2018 14:37

I'd love to live in 'land of nod' I pass it so often !

youlittlecharmer · 26/08/2018 14:42

SellFridges · 26/08/2018 14:45

I went to school in Clowne.

CraftyGin · 26/08/2018 14:47

Dr Seuss wrote a book based on where I live.

Bluejay19 · 26/08/2018 14:56

There is a small village near where I grew up called North Bitchburn. Never understood why though it is near a town called Crook.

Hoosey · 26/08/2018 15:01

I grew up in Twatt until I was 12 which draws lots of tourists to take photos of the road sign, much to the consternation of the locals. Suebnm did you live in the peerie Twatt or the peedie Twatt?

Saggital · 26/08/2018 15:08

Somerset and Dorset have some amazing names, not all rude. Huish Episcopi is one of my favourites as it sounds ancient.

We also chuckle at Broadwoodwidger on the way to Cornwall and love it when we get to Indian Queens.

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 26/08/2018 15:11

I remember also driving past 'Wank' in Germany back in 1991. We were all giggling at that. Also a friend lives near Fingringhoe in Essex.

HermansHermit · 26/08/2018 15:14

Lived in S Yorks for many years, and frequently visited my rellies in Lancs. Always made me smile travelling back home this time of year to see a large sign in the field near the Flouch roundabout advertising the Penistone Show. Coming from Manchester the direction sign neatly obliterates the middle characters.

Ihavenoideaatall · 26/08/2018 15:18

Broadwoodwidger 😂 And somethingor other cum hard 😂

Seqkat · 26/08/2018 15:20

Beer isn't named for the drink (or any brewery, which it's not had) - it's after the old English word for grove/wood, bearu. I'd agree with the pp who said it's worth a visit - lovely place!

pinkmagic1 · 26/08/2018 15:24

Gaywood always raises a smile when we drive past the signs. Drove past a sign for a village called 'land of nod' a couple of weeks ago.

MrsLandingham · 26/08/2018 15:26

There used to be a Butt Hole Lane in Conisbrough. They got coach parties stopping to take photos, so the council eventually renamed it.

Mintylicious · 26/08/2018 15:42

It’s not the UK, but I have a Canadian friend who is from Dildo.

She’d always just said she was from Newfoundland, so I did a genuine ShockGrin when she flew home to see family and checked in on Facebook the other day!

chloworm · 26/08/2018 15:45

Passed a sign for 2 places along A11 Babraham, Linton

Busybusybust · 26/08/2018 15:46

Piddle Trenthide

TooManyPaws · 26/08/2018 15:47

There's a village called Touch in Aberdeenshire and an area of Dunfermline the same. Both are pronounced Too-ch with the ch as in loch. Tough School raised some eyebrows though.

Personally, I've always been fond of Wormiehills.

Athenajm80 · 26/08/2018 15:50

@tindogtavern Me too! Ooh now I'll be looking at neighbours wondering if they are a mumsnetter.
Splott also has the locally famous Magic Roundabout for those of you who don't know this area.

rainbowlou · 26/08/2018 15:52

PepperSteaks · 26/08/2018 15:57

Haven’t read the whole thread but there is a place called Little Snoring in Norfolk too. One time on the news it said there was a family called Gotobed who lived there!

Ta1kinpeace · 26/08/2018 15:58

PickAChew · 26/08/2018 16:03
