Would you let a random stranger stay in your house alone with a 11 year old?!

Just watching Beauty and the Beast with the DC for the one millionth time and I've just realised there is a bloody great big plot hole!

The prince at the start won't let the old woman stay but if he has been a beast for 10 years by this 21st year, then he was only 11 when she turned him into a beast!

So because a child won't let a stranger stay in their house, she turns him into a beast... not a particularly good lesson for kids in stranger danger!

I realise I may be over thinking thisGrin

Ignore the mistakes in the title...I'm on the app with stupid autocorrect

Yabu. Children must learn to share.

Ansumpasty · 26/08/2018 09:11

I think his age kind of froze in time when he was turned into a beast Wink

Glumglowworm · 26/08/2018 09:11

He had tons of servents, he was hardly home alone!

ChipmunksAreMissing · 26/08/2018 09:18

So you would be ok if whilst you were in the kitchen, your 11 year old opened the door invited a random beggar to sleep in your house...

Also, why did the servers get changed? They didn't do anything!

And what's with all the cups? Do they all belong to Mrs Potts? How many kids does she have?!

I think I'm falling into a rabbit hole! Shock

They don't age once they're transformed. That's why chip the teacup remains a child - otherwise he'd have been born already a teacup... He was 21 when he rejected her.

Why am I replying to this?!

AnoukSpirit · 26/08/2018 09:35

Also, why did the servers get changed? They didn't do anything!

A lesson for us all on why you shouldn't work for unscrupulous employers with questionable ethics.

Enko · 26/08/2018 09:38

Also, why did the servers get changed? They didn't do anything!

That is explained in the movie (yes also over invested Smile) Mrs Potts explains that they are punished because they stood by and did nothing when his father turned him into a cruel person. After his mother had died.

So the lesson should be always show kindness and be a good person even when other are not?

FlosCampi · 26/08/2018 09:41

But his age explicitly isn't frozen as the petals are dropping off the magical rose gradually until he reaches his 21st birthday, so time must still be moving forward in its usual linear fashion. My concern is about the actual furniture, crockery etc. Is every single fork a transformed servant, or are there other normal forks for them to use after the servants are returned to human form?

loverly · 26/08/2018 09:45

'The rose the Enchantress had given him was enchanted, and it would bloom until his twenty-first year.'

'In his first animated appearance (set some time before his twenty-first year, as evidenced by the rose not having bloomed fully yet)...'

'Because Chip was alive when the Enchantress cursed the Beast's Castle, it is likely that he did not age during that time period.'

According to Disney the Beast ages but other characters don't. Also if his parents were either dead or they left when they saw what had happened during their date night then surely they should've been punished most?

One more....in a castle full of servants why is a prince opening the door to strange woman in the middle of the night?

WhenTheDragonsCame · 26/08/2018 09:45

I thought the servants were transformed into the object they were holding at the time. So cogsworth was holding a clock and Mrs Potts was holding a teapot.

FlosCampi · 26/08/2018 09:55

That makes sense WhenTheDragonsCame!

MyMuffinsStuck · 26/08/2018 09:56

It must be fate that I'm supposed to post my first ever mumsnet comment... DD and I currently watching Disney version!

I love this film but my biggest gripe is the beast has an American accent yet when he turns back in to a dude (er...spoiler alert!) his accent is definitely French! What's that about?!

loverly · 26/08/2018 09:58

Just found this online - how the live action one tried to close the gaps in the original...

EvilRingahBitch · 26/08/2018 10:17

I love that the live action remake is clearly written by people who’ve watched the 1991 version waaay too many times, overthought every moment and tweaked everything they could.

CandidCamerama · 26/08/2018 10:19

While we are about it, how can you dance or run in glass slippers?
That is a trip to A&E to remove embedded shards right there.

yes I know about the whole vari/verre controversy but still it's glass now

CherryPavlova · 26/08/2018 10:25

It’s a fairy story......read Bettelheim “The uses of enchantment”.

longwayoff · 26/08/2018 10:29

Thanks Cherry just about to say the same. And the wolf didnt really eat my granny.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 26/08/2018 10:31

He turned into the beast and ate his parents. See, I could write for Disney.

THEsonofaBITCH · 26/08/2018 10:39

It’s a fairy story
The reason the original story was written was to convince girls that arranged marriages are fine and they shouldn't kick up a fuss Confused

Marcipex · 26/08/2018 10:51

Really!??

loverly · 26/08/2018 12:00

Original also was to tell little girls they shouldn't steal even if it's for a good reason - I'm sure Belle's father originally stole a rose for Belle as a present...hence the Beast's anger.
