Titled with Across in mind Wink

May all the Oaf's problems be big ones, and the events of this week at least be the beginning of the beginning of the end.

Kinell Gumpendorf what a clip. Thank you for that.

Quantumblue · 26/08/2018 06:54

I'll never forget how graciously McCain conceded to Obama in 2008.

Roussette · 26/08/2018 07:11

Yes, that clip of McCain putting right before anything else is very worthy of him.

And Trump's words on McCain's passing are worthy of Trump too. Heartless and meaningless

ohmymimi · 26/08/2018 07:47

A balanced view of John McCain.

That moment when he defended the truth of Barak Obama during the campaign showed the solid core of decency in his character.

Thank you, Across, for that explanation about amending the ConstitutionSmile

'When asked for an official statement on McCain’s death, the White House referred to Trump’s tweet'
He ended that insincere tweet with an exclamation mark. They are all despicable.

Someone has managed to out-Trump her leader.

Arizona GOP Senate candidate Kelli Ward accuses John McCain of dying to push ‘negative narrative’ about her

I think I will now take this advice.

I don't think John McCain cared one goddamn bit what Trump did or did not say about him before and I think a nice way to honor him would be for the rest of us not to care one goddamn bit what Trump does or does not have to say about him now.

I have family who still refer to Trump as 'our wonderful President'. It's hard.

lettuceWrap · 26/08/2018 10:04

RIP John McCain 🙁

On his time as a prisoner Shock.

He must have had extraordinary courage to refuse the liberty offered.

'The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was caught issuing orders to distort information, and in some cases outright lie, to say war-torn nations were safer, in an effort to justify refusing refugees as part of the Trump administration’s aggressive efforts against immigrants.'

'A federal judge on Saturday struck down most of President Donald Trump’s executive orders limiting the power of federal employee unions.
The ruling, from the D.C. Circuit, is a victory for the multiple labor unions that sued to block the executive orders on the grounds that the president lacked authority to make the changes without approval from Congress.'

If you wondered how the alt-right Breitbart readers are handling Sen. McCain’s death, I have to tell you if you had just thought up to now that the alt-right were despicable, let this be your confirmation. They couldn’t be happier. They swallowed every bit of bile Trump spewed and are now splashing it all BB in glee. It is a truly disgusting display of callousness and antipathy.

As a retired Fed this made me stand up and cheer! Under Clinton we were given a great deal of control and autonomy in how we did our work and it fostered a great relationship between management and employees. Under Bush it was basically curtailed and we all felt it. Under Obama, we were again given back the control of our own work. Friends still working have said how radically BAD conditions have gotten under Scrotus. I'm glad to see the judge saw it too.

I retired under Obama and am SOOO glad I did not have to work a single day with Scrotus as my 'boss'.

That's interesting Across, because it sounds as if there was a tendency under (those two) Democrat presidents to decentralise power; and under (those two) Republican presidents to centralise power into their own hands.

How does that interact with the claim that Republicans supposedly want smaller government? Maybe they do – but only the sense of l'état c'est moi ?

Similarly, how does it interact with the tension of state power vs federal power?

annandale · 26/08/2018 16:04

It's the same over here though. Conservatives bang on about the wasteful ess of local government and about how [insert function here] is not what people want, so therefire cut powers and fundinf from local government. Except because modern society is quite complex, and tge local experience matters more than is acknowledged, people sometimes do turn out to want whatever it was. Answer: central government will do it instead. See free schools, run from central government to undermine any local power base in education.

Anniegetyourgun · 26/08/2018 16:05

They want a very small government indeed, i.e. one person.

Anniegetyourgun · 26/08/2018 16:05

... works for N. Korea and USSR Russia, don't it?
