We're moving house next week and the EA board outside our house now says Sold. Normally the space on the road outside ours is empty and there's plenty of parking around 30 metres further up. However there's been a car parked outside ours for the last three days (without moving) - it arrived during the daytime so they would have seen the Sold board. If I'd been them I'd have anticipated the house might need access for a removals lorry and would have parked further up. It's only because we have a 2 week exchange date that we're not moving today with nowhere close for the lorry to park!

Obviously anyone can park anywhere they like as long as it's legal but would you leave your car outside someone's house with a Sold board if you knew it was going to be a few days and there were plenty of spaces up the road? Or am I over considerate/overthinking? as usual

You are overthinking.

I don't think I'd pay that much attention when parking.

ladyloopy · 24/08/2018 12:43

Erm, your overthinking a lot.

Bluelady · 24/08/2018 12:45

Overthinking to my mind. I probably wouldn't even notice the Sold sign. Our neighbours have had one on their house for about five months - complex sale.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 24/08/2018 12:45

Yeah I thought I might be Grin I suffer from anxiety so I tend to view life through a lens of "what ifs?" not just for myself but for others.

overthinking.

Merryoldgoat · 24/08/2018 12:45

Overthinking. Plus, those boards stay up for ages so it’s no indication of a moving timeline. If I’m legally parked that’s all I care about.

SoyDora · 24/08/2018 12:46

The house we’ve just bought had a sold board from the day our offer was accepted, and we didn’t complete until 3 months later (we only lived round the corner so I saw when the board went up). There are many houses round here that have sold boards up for weeks/months.
So no, it wouldn’t occur to me at all I’m afraid.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 24/08/2018 12:47

I suppose I also have the background info that our EA board was only just changed from under offer to sold earlier this week so I know it's not shown like that for ages, but obviously they don't.

It's nice to know I could make my life easier for myself by not considering others quite as much as I do!

Houses can have a "sold" board outside them for months, though. It wouldn't occur to me to think that moving day was imminent

flubbadubble · 24/08/2018 12:48

It would occur to me but only because OH drives a removal lorry and is forever moaning about it Grin

SoyDora · 24/08/2018 12:48

Round here boards just tend to go from ‘for sale’ to ‘sold’ as soon as an offer is accepted.

OlennasWimple · 24/08/2018 12:49

If you need access for moving, most councils will suspend parking for a few days if you apply in advance (removal companies normally take care of it). This means that a car parked in the temporary no parking zone can be towed

Bluntness100 · 24/08/2018 12:49

No it wouldn't occur to me either. Those boards can be up for months.

FadedRed · 24/08/2018 12:51

Estate Agents boards can be left for weeks, so, like the pp's, this would not be obvious to many people parking. Around here, if you want to reserve a space for workmen or removals etc, you ask the local CPO for temporary bollards. Though not helpful if someone parks there for several days. Have you asked your neighbours if they know who the car belongs to? checked if it is taxed? Asked the Police if it has been dumped?

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 24/08/2018 12:51

Thanks Olennas but I already phoned the council yesterday and they told me there's nothing they can do for me to reserve the spot. They even said I'd be told off if I put my wheelie bin with a polite note in the road the right before!

OP posts:
Mari50 · 24/08/2018 12:51

Where I live a sold sign goes up as soon as an offer is accepted and the actual moving date could be ages away. Its utterly meaningless as far as giving an indication of needing access so yeah, you’re overthinking this

Bluntness100 · 24/08/2018 12:51

Are you saying you don't park in front of houses that have been sold? Confused

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 24/08/2018 12:53

@flubbadubble what do they do if there's no access, do they double park or do they just swear a lot and have to walk further?

OP posts:
ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 24/08/2018 12:55

@Bluntness100 if I wasn't parking for long then I probably wouldn't think about it. If it was going to be days though, I'd avoid a Sold sign. Well I would have done, but not now Grin

Wow thats martyrish!

LifeHackQueens · 24/08/2018 12:55

I doubt I'd notice tbh. Could you put a sign up asking 'no parking due to a delivery'?

sallywinter · 24/08/2018 13:01

We live near a church and once came back from work (walked from train station) to see a funeral party winding their way around our little car Blush They hadn't put cones or anything out in the morning (which they usually do for a wedding.) We avoid parking there now but the pub manager has a a spare key just in case...

The point of this being it's probably unintentional and perhaps if you left a really nice note politely asking if they would possibly mind moving it on [insert date] most people would be happy to do so?

SoupDragon · 24/08/2018 13:03

I put polite posters in the nearest trees explaining that we were moving on X date and would need space for a removal van.

I suppose I also have the background info that our EA board was only just changed from under offer to sold earlier this week so I know it's not shown like that for ages, but obviously they don't.

That would imply to me that it’s only just sold, not that moving was imminent.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 24/08/2018 13:05

As well as the anxiety (not helped by the move of course) I had an abusive dad so I grew up treading on eggshells and being a people pleaser. My expectations aren't always the norm hence me asking for opinions.

I'll put some signs up if people don't think I'm a CF for doing so!

OP posts:
SockQueen · 24/08/2018 13:09

I don't think I'd think that much about it. The house we currently live in had "sold" boards up for about 4 months before we actually completed. The day before our move we knocked on the doors of all our neighbours at both old house and new, and explained we were moving the next day and asked if they could leave the pavement outside our house clear.

Didn't stop some fucking joyriders ditching a car with a blown-out tyre outside our old house that night though. Angry
